Had anyone else taken their partner’s sack yet? He was so busy strategizing that he pretty much blocked out what the other pairs were doing. He sighed silently. Was he really going to do this? His family expected him to make prefect one day, and a detention, no matter how unfair it was, would kill his chances and draw their ire. Whatever he did, he had to think fast!
Heath watched his partner intently, trying to anticipate her first move. He supposed he shouldn’t be surprised that it was a summoning charm. He raised his wand to block her spell. “Pro-” He began, but before he could finish casting a shield charm, that bright light happened. He blinked several times but willed himself not to close his eyes longer than a fraction of a second at a time. He may be willing to sacrifice his sack for Claudine, but the same did not apply to whoever cast that spell! He instinctively held the sack higher, just in case that spell’s caster got any ideas about taking it. Whoever it was, he was probably taller than them.
Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Heath’s eyes to adjust to that light. He was an actor, remember? This wasn’t the first time he had a blindingly bright light shining in his face; stage lights malfunctioned all the time. Perhaps just as fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on the way one looked at it), Claudine’s summoning charm hadn’t worked. Even if he did intend to throw the game for her, he didn’t want it to happen right off the bat. That would be too obvious! So now what? How could he give Claudine a chance to get his sack and still look like he was fighting back? An idea suddenly occurred to him! “Fumos!” he exclaimed, making a spiral-shaped wand movement. Thick smoke shot out of the tip of his wand, hiding him from view.
While he was hidden, he planned to hide the sack somewhere on his person, but where? His robe pocket? No, too obvious? His back trouser pocket? Definitely not! Then anyone could sneak up behind him and take it! It needed to be somewhere only Claudine could find. He quickly stuffed it into his front trouser pocket where it would be partially concealed by his robes For one wild moment, the thought crossed his mind to use a duplication charm on the sack, hold the copy, and hide the real one to pull out later, in case he was threatened with detention, but he decided that crossed the line between acting and lying. It might make Claudine feel even worse if she thought she had his sack, only for that to not be the case.
When the smoke cleared, Heath was no longer holding his sack, and his now empty left hand hovered over his pocket, trembling slightly. Now all he could do was hope Claudine would read his body language and guess where the sack was.
That light really did hurt her eyes despite her attempts to protect them. Claudine didn’t know who cast it but whomever it was, they were so inconsiderate. But whatever. She wasn’t going to let whoever it was get the sack. Her fingers instinctively curled around the object to clutch at it tighter. Gosh, it was as though she were blinded and she was distracted. So, so distracted and it took her a few more seconds to recall that she had been assigned a task by Trent. Right.
The sack she had been trying to steal from Heath. Claudine lowered her arm and opened her eyes cautiously. But where was Heath? Claudine blinked in confusion. Why the smoke? She had no idea, of course, what he was planning. When the smoke finally did clear, the Snakette eyed Heath with suspicion. He certainly seemed normal: there was nothing different about his appearance, at least. Wait… the sack was missing. Claudine’s eyebrows creased. Had someone surrounded him in smoke then snatched the sack? And why wasn’t he trying to get the one she held in her hand?
Maybe he was just messing with her. Maybe he wanted her to think the sack was no longer in his possession. “Accio sack! Accio sack!’’ She’d try a few more times just to be sure the sack really was gone. |
