As she watched her friend work, she couldn't help but wonder if he had done this before; he seemed to be a pro at this. As conversation turned to their situation at Hogwarts, Claudine was surprised to find the Ravenclaw laughing. She wasn’t usually funny, you know. The girl started to bob her head then remembered that he was preoccupied and probably wouldn’t see her. “It sucks about the magic. I miss having it to help me everyday.’’ It was the first time she had admitted this out aloud.*

Maybe a very big mistake had been made on her part by asking that question. Claudine hadn’t thought it would have been that big of a deal but as she watched Heathen’s reaction, it was quite obvious she had been wrong. She had made him uncomfortable and she regretted it. The girl had only opened her mouth to tell him not to worry, that she didn’t need an answer when he apparently made up his mind that he’d tell her the reason.*

Claudine closed her mouth and stared at Heathen’s forehead as he came near. He was speaking so quietly, she had to lean towards him a bit to catch what was being said. Oh. She was silent for a moment after the words, processing them. “That explains a lot. I’m not sure if I would have noticed it until recently because of the memory issues. And... I'm very sorry you've had your emotions used against you.’’ Indeed she was sorry to hear about that. A thought occurred to her. “Have you figured out that I don’t look at anyone in their eyes?’’ came her question in a surprised tone. “Is that why you pull your hair back when you speak to me?’’ It had been in a Transfiguration lesson this year that she had first noticed his eyes and the memory had stuck with her. But it was true, Claudine usually stared at everyone’s foreheads, noses, lips, just past their ears to the distance behind them… anywhere but their eyes.

It was only after the fact that it occurred to Heath that Claudine might think he was laughing at her, and he inwardly berated himself over it. What was wrong with him? He hardly ever laughed at anything, and now it was like he turned into a giggling idiot whenever he was around her. Ugh, this storm must be affecting his emotions as well as his memory! "Sorry," he said with an apologetic look back at Claudine. "It's not you… I was just imagining my sister's reaction if I asked her to apparate to Espresso Patronum for you."

Then the conversation turned to the lack of magic, and Heath had no idea how to respond. He never really thought of his lack of confidence in spellwork as a blessing in disguise until he heard Claudine. If anything, he had the opposite problem! "I know," he replied. "If you like, I can help you. I'm kind of used to doing things without magic. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m not very good at wandwork.”

Wow, that came out wrong! Now Claudine probably thought he was too lazy or too dumb to learn magic. Way to make a fool of yourself, Heath! he thought. “I mean, I can do the spells when I practice alone," he explained, "but in a classroom when there’s people around to watch me fail…” He sighed, nervously running a hand through his hair. Did Claudine have any idea where he was going with this?

Heath didn't know how Claudine would react when he told her why he always hid his eyes, but he didn't expect her to feel sorry for him! He was torn between feeling guilty for making her pity him and gratified that she actually cared. "It's okay," he said, realizing too late how that probably sounded. "Not okay that it happened, but you don't have to be sorry."

Merlin, was he ever going to stop saying the wrong thing?! He looked around the room for a distraction when Claudine asked another question that caught him off guard. Come to think of it, he had noticed that about her, but he didn’t think anything of it at the time. He wondered if her reasons for not looking people in the eye were similar to his own reason for hiding his eyes, but he didn’t ask. She could tell him in her own time. “I have noticed, but that’s not why,” he replied. “It’s because I trust you not to judge me for whatever you see there."
