I used to try and sort characters all the time in the past, but more recently I've found I only do it with fandoms where I'm super into the characters or just
very excited about the whole concept in general (which doesn't happen as much these days bc I've grown old and jaded).
P.S. I agree with Kate re: Lizzie's Ravenclawness but I don't know how to explain it so I'll let Kate handle that and maybe add more thoughts later.
So to the surprise of literally no one, I'll be sorting my guys from His Dark Materials ^____^ And I'm not sorry for how much I babbled, because I loved every minute of this babble.
- Lyra Belacqua/Silvertongue - Slytherin
Right, listen. The obvious (and correct, since she'd have been sorted at 11) answer for this one is Slytherin. I'm sorry. Lyra is incredibly loyal, she lies like she breathes, she runs around manipulating people for her own needs (that are often quite selfless, but they're her needs nevertheless).
Alternatively, I think Lyra is one of those characters where one could probably argue she could fit in every house. She's reckless and headstrong enough for Gryffindor, curious and creative enough for Ravenclaw, and loyal and a fighter (in the 'will fight for a better world' sense) enough for Hufflepuff. She's a very big character, which is why she leads the series and why she's AWESOME and the best Slytherin hero I could have asked for.
_ - Will Parry - Gryffindor.
My boy is SUCH a Gryffindor. He's probably my favourite Gryffindor of all times. He's brave and somehow even more headstrong and stubborn than Lyra, he's often foolishly running into danger and willingly fighting others for his friends. What I like about Will most is his belief that he's right and everyone else is wrong, because it usually turns out to be true
love him so much, my sweet, fierce, highkey terrifying lil boy Will Parry.
_ - Mrs. Coulter - Slytherin.
Spoiler: Like mother like daughter ^__^. Mrs. Coulter is so Slytherin she'd petition the house be renamed Coulter, she Slytherin's better than Salazar ever did. Ambitious, cutthroat and calculating, she cares deeply about her social status and how much power it allows her to wield. Marisa Coulter will give up everything (I mean it) to stay in power and keep her influence. Loyal to those she decides to be loyal to (and if she changes her mind about someone, I pity the fool), she channels her incredibly deep emotions (mostly rage lbr, and love, but my awful lil bb is big mad) into getting things done and no one can stop her. Seriously. No one.
_ - Lord Asriel - Ravenclaw.
This is why I could never hate him. I get him too much. My child (who is a grown man, jsyk) is almost as awful as Mrs. Coulter up there, but in a very different way. I mentioned in another thread that we were denied a fully fleshed Ravenclaw villain in HP canon; thanks to Sir Philip Pullman, I got my wish in another fandom. What I love about Asriel is that he doesn't come off as a villain, and he certainly doesn't see himself as one. He's a scientist (a scholar if we use in-universe terms) and an explorer, one who will do everything it takes (again, I'm being very literal here and it ain't pretty) in order to advance human knowledge and superiority. Some could argue that he could fit Gryffindor and Slytherin, and they'd be right on certain levels, but his primary driving force puts him very squarely in Ravenclaw and I love him. I'm not proud of it, but I do. Fight me.
Now, the daemons (in-universe out of body animal representations of the character's souls). I think the daemons should reflect the house of the character, otherwise we've sorted the character wrong, but I
do think that they can show a strong connection to a secondary house because human beings are rounded individuals. So, in my opinion, the secondary houses are:
- Pantalaimon (Lyra's daemon, shape unsettled for most of the series): a Gryffindor/Hufflepuff. Idk. I'm struggling.
- The golden monkey (Mrs. Coulter's daemon): lmao a Slytherin. Mrs. Coulter doesn't have a secondary house. I do not like the golden monkey. >__>
- Stelmaria (Lord Asriel's daemon, a snow leopard): I don't know why, but she gives me Slytherin vibes. Maybe it's the regality, and the way she doesn't stop Asriel from doing the things he does (as opposed to Pan, who often reels Lyra back from her more terrible ideas).
Honourable mentions:
- Iorek Byrnison - Hufflepuff. By like, a mile. JK should have stuck to her original plan of making Hufflepuffs bears because that's the only way Iorek Byrnison (a panserbjørn in-universe, aka a talking bear) would be an even better Hufflepuff than he already is.
- Serafina Pekkala - .............................. right. no. idk. Help me if you've read the books. She could be anywhere. If given the choice I think baby Serafina would have picked Ravenclaw? but sorting based on characteristics alone, this witch is too good for Hogwarts.
- Lee Scoresby - Slytherin. I don't care that Lin Manuel Miranda made him seem like a Gryffindor, he's a Slytherin. Or a Hufflepuff. Maybe. But NOT a Gryffindor.
