Carwyn had moved away from his place at the end of the table to write a few additional notes onto the blackboard while they practiced their wandwork. What trouble could they get into with a vanishing charm and match sticks?? Exactly, everything would be fine. He had complete faith in them.

SPOILER!!: Flora

She needed to be on his GOOD side, especially if she wanted to see him turn into a fox again.

See!? She was never ever going to let that go.

So, she just nodded her head, letting him think know that there would be no threats of vanishment, unless it was directed to her matchstick. Her wand was in her hand and she was paying very very VERY close attention to the wand movements, because she really really REALLY wanted to get this spell right.

It was a down. A zig. A zag. A zig a zig ah, and then the incantation. Easy. "Evanesco. EvanESco. EvanES-." She stopped mid-incantation to raise her hand and get Professor Eris' attention. "What happens if, you know, one of the matches," Or all of the matches, really. "catch on fire?"

Did HE know how to put a fire out? Because she sure didn't.

However, when he peeked over one shoulder to check on them, he saw Flora with her hand in the air. He turned away from the board, smiling. “Yes, Miss Thiese?” Moving over to where she was standing, he smiled. “I will extinguish any fires, try not to worry. Just focus on vanishing your ma-.” His words got cut off as a POP burst through the room.

SPOILER!!: Valencia

She then gave the wand movement a try. Dowwwwn and siiiiideways 3 with SHARP angles.

Now to put it all together "Evanesco!" Down, sharp movementtotheleft. Her wand let out a POP causing the Ravenclaw to immediately drop her wand in fright and frantically pat the match with her robes -- it seemed she accidentally set off sparks???

Wide-eyed, Carwyn stared across the table at Valencia. He gave Flora a quick smile before moving towards the Ravenclaw. “Are you okay, Miss Philips? Are you hurt?” He asked her, voice worried as he checked the sparks hadn’t taken on her clothing. However, before he could offer her any further attention another BAM sounded out.

SPOILER!!: Isla

Remember the wand movement would be like rocket science. Down...left...down...what was it again? There were way too many directions to remember, but she tried to think about that sideways M he had mentioned. "EvanESco!" she said. She was pretty sure she had that part down pat.

Down, right, left, right, left... That was it! Isla whipped her wand into the correct directions (she hoped) as she thought about that sideways M.

Now, on to that matchstick.

Wasn't that what they were supposed to do next? Isla decided to practice the spell on more time for good measure. "EvanESco!" she said. Down, right, left, right, left...BAM!

What the heck was that?!

Had her own wand backfired on her?

This time, the sound had come from one of the Slytherin’s. “Miss Bellchant?” The Transfiguration Professor asked as he once again moved around the large table towards one of the younger students. “Are you quite alright?” He enquired, again checking that there were no sparks or burns that Gabi would berate him for allowing to happen within his classroom.

SPOILER!!: Aboli

Easy-peasy. Lemon-squeezy. Right?

"Ahem."

Down...right left right. LEFT. "Evanesco!" she cried, doing the wand motion. The bangs that had filled the room were in her ears as ANOTHER bang joined in - HER MATCHSTICK BLEW UP. It just BOOMED. In her face. She coughed at the slight smoke and glanced down...her matchstick had an ashy color, what was left of it, anyway, and the small explosion had also affected the tip of tie.

Great.

BLOODY GREAT.

Looking up and around again Carwyn’s eyes went wide as he saw yet another of his Slytherin’s having difficulty. His eyebrows knit together as he moved around to make sure nothing had caught fire and Aboli wasn’t injured. “Are you okay, Miss Song?” He asked, carefully checking on her. He gave her another matchstick for when she tried again. However before he could do anything else, there was another BANG and again, his eyes searched for the student who he needed to check on.

SPOILER!!: Islay

Ohkaaay she could do this.

They had probably messed up the spell right? She hoped at least, as she took her wand in hand and flicked her wand down in a diagonal and diagonal down the other direction and again and again for four down moves as she tried the spell. “evanESco” she tried as she closed her eyes. And then it happened.

A fizzle of bright white light and a BANG of her own. The match flashed alive and caught a light the spark almost too high and...and what was that smell “noooooo” she cried out and quickly began swatting at her head to put out her now slightly singed hair. “Sorry”

What was happening? The Welshman thought yet again as he quickly made his way around the desk to check on the Gryffindor. “Are you okay, Miss Moreau?” He asked, wincing slightly as he noted her singed hair. Bless her hair, that was a nightmare! Carwyn was just away to confirm she was indeed okay when the loudest BANG yet echo’ed around the room.

SPOILER!!: Eiji & Jina

Hopefully not take it out on the old man either but judge and jury were still out for that.

As for the theoretical portion of the lesson...Eiji's hand remained down. Like always. Branches of Transfiguration and examples? That was basic information that was the baseline for OWLs. Details about Vanishment? That was a bit more NEWT level to a degree, but he would let those that felt like they needed to impress people answer. He would just...date his parchment and then idlt twirl his quill around for a bit until they got to something more useful to him than review.

Which came soon enough with some casting practice. It was...a spell he was not particularly fond of. Vanishing in general was not something he enjoyed as it felt like complete waste. Performing Evanesco on a potion that he could not salvage physically pained him at times. So many ingredients...time...wasted...

But he was getting a bit distracted.

Sighing as he lifted his wand and eyed the matchstick. A spell he had already performed countless times, he was ready to just vanish the thing and be done with this practice.

"EvanESco," he sighed lazily while performing the zigzag wand movement.

What SHOULD have happened was the matchstick vanished.

What DID happen was...well...

There was a loud BANG like a car backfiring and a brilliant and HOT light erupted from his wand with enough force that it blasted the seventh year backwards a bit. The matchstick ignited as the light struck it, creating a blaze where it rested and...well... TECHNICALLY vanished.

....technically.

Laying on his back with his wand flung from his hand a few paces away, Eiji just sort of...stared up at the ceiling, winded from the way his back had struck the ground.

It was indeed more difficult than other spells that they learned previously, but she was confident that she would be able to perform the spell and vanish the matchstick successfully. She cleared her throat, held her wand in front of her and concentrated on her target. When she was ready, she began the sharp wand movement through the air, saying "Evane - aaaaargh!"

She had stopped midway through casting the spell, shocked by the POP and BANG that could be heard all around the classroom. At first she wondered if the explosions had resulted from poor spellwork, but surely not everyone made mistakes that led to magic backfiring. Especially not Eiji Rasting, who was supposed to be super smart. There must be something else going on. She was not going to attempt the spell herself, because it seemed too risky at the moment. Instead, she approached Eiji and handed him his wand. "You okay?"

What's going on, Professor??

This. Was. Not. Happening. Absolutely. Was. Not. Happening.

And then came the nail in the coffin. The unnecessary commentary of Bernadette. What did Rebecca see in her anyway?

"I'm just peachy," he grumbled as he snatched his wand back from Jina. Hesitating a moment before pulling himself up off the ground, he DID mumble a sincere thank you to her for giving him back his wand. As for Cole...the young bloke received a shallow sort of glare. No he did not need to go get Professor Eris who was perfectly capable of seeing for himself what had just happened...THANKS. "I'm fine," he gritted back as he finally got himself back to standing position and saw the remnants of what had once been his matchstick.

".......I require another matchstick, professor."

Ugh the shame. SHAME and HUMILIATION. Could this term just...stop it already?

She now had two options: stand around and wait for this thing to pass, or practise vanishment like she was told to do. She spent half a minute doing the former, looking around the classroom anxiously. Then she decided that she had to do something, even if it meant trying and failing to perform the spell. From what she could see, magic backfiring did not seem too dangerous. Still, it had been a while since she felt so nervous to cast a spell ...

Pointing her wand at the matchstick in front of her again, she gathered all her concentration and drew a sharp sideways M through the air, saying the incantation, "Evanesco." She held her breath afterwards, expecting a BANG to follow. But no, her matchstick had vanished successfully.

It took her immense effort to not glance at Eiji. She felt so awkward and so CONFUSED.

Carwyn’s head whipping around the group to see whose wand had misfired this time. What was going on?! He thought, although this time he could see … no-one…. Who looked like they couldn’t believe what their wand had done to them. Who??

It wasn’t until he stepped around the table to talk to Naya (whose wand had BANGed after Eiji’s) that he noticed Jina passing Eiji his wand as the Slytherin started to get himself together. He looked that young man over, and when he didn’t see anything worrying, he simply passed the seventh year another match stick without making a comment.

There was nothing worse than being prodded when your magic had just embarrassed you. In his own fifth year, he’d been thrown across the classroom and landed on the desk of his crush. Horrifying. He gave Eiji a head-nod, hoping he would know that he could talk to him at any time, and continued round to see what had happened to Naya.

SPOILER!!: Naya and Cole

She was glad that the professor agreed with her answer though. And now, it was time to get to work. They were going to practice the Vanishing Charm.

Naya took a step away from Cole. No offense, but she needed to focus and well........Cole. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she practiced the incantation. “E-van-ES-co, Evanesco, Evanesco”. It was kind of a cool word, one you could say with a little flourish. Naya wondered if that would help things along.

Now it was time for the wand movement. The Gryffindor took out her wand and began to make the sideways M movement. She felt like a backwards Zorro with wand substituting for his sword. Feeling her mind start to wander, Naya tried to get her focus back. She made the mistake of looking toward Cole and there it went.

It was time to try the spell for real and Naya tried once again to concentrate. Better to look at the match and only the match. With a deep breath, she made the wand movement and said, “Evanesco”. And......nothing happened. Ok. This wasn’t the easiest spell. She would try again. Naya repeated the wand movement. “Evanes....” As she was in the middle of saying the incantation, several bangs went off. She was too far into it to stop now. “co”. She should have stopped when she had the chance. BANG! Naya’s wand had backfired, apparently like some of her other classmates’. And there were sparks! She jumped back in surprise. That had never happened before. What was going on? Was this a normal occurrence when practicing this spell?

They were sort of like a couple now and it was both scary and wonderful so his mind tend to drift to her, a lot. It didn’t help that he stood next to her now and wanted to reach out and hold her hand.

Cole was glad that when they were going to practice the vanishing charm that Naya solved the problem for him by taking a few steps away from him. Maybe she had a hard time focusing when he was near too? It’d be nice if it was that way. Turning his back to Naya he took several long breaths before he got his focus on. To himself he practiced the incantation in a low whisper. "EvanEscO, EvANesco, Evanesco."

Next he tried to get the hang of the complex sideways M movement. It took a lot of focus so Cole was happy he wasn’t facing Naya or he’d have lost his focus by stealing glances at her. When he felt confident enough to try his hand at the spell he heard several BANGS behind him and he watched first with astonishment and slight horror how Eji’s wand backfired and sent him spralling backwards and then Naya’s started firing sparks. What on earth? Shaking his head he turned around and went to Naya first and asked worriedly, reaching out to pat her on the left arm. "Naya, are you okay? You’re not hurt?" Cole then looked over at Eji and called over to the older guy that was lying on the floor "Eji! Are you all right? Do you need me to get Professor Eris?" Was it safe for him to try vanishing his matchstick too? Cole wasn’t feeling super motivated because of what had happened to first Eji and then Naya and a few others too but it was the task they were given. He had to try right?

Reluctantly he went over to his matchstick and eyed it consideringly. It was just a matchstick the worst that could happen was that he’d set fire to it and Cole knew how to put fires out. Gripping his wand he moved his wand in the down, right, left, down left motion and said firmly as he aimed his wand at the matchstick “Evanesco!” nothing happened. He kept casting the spell like ten times but nothing happened. The matchstick only got slightly greyer in shade. Frustrated Cole said to nobody in particular. "Why isn't this stupid match not vanishing? I'm doing everything right..... I don't get it."

Naya looked around and noticed that she wasn’t the only one having problems. This was all very strange. Like beyond regular Hogwarts level strange.

It seemed like some of her classmates were having success with the spell. Naya was a little reluctant to try it again, but hey, she was a Gryffindor. Fortunately despite all of the banging and sparking, her match was still intact. Trying to regain her composure, Naya took a couple more deep breaths. Focus. Maybe she hadn’t been focused enough before. Concentrating with all her might, Naya made the zigzag wand movement and once again said, “Evanesco”. This time, her matchstick disappeared. Now Naya was more confused than ever. She had done everything exactly the same way and this time the match was vanished. What had happened before?

Cue the confused Carwyn, as he moved closer to the Gryffindor as she tried the spell again.. “Miss Lindsay, I hope you are okay.” He said, slightly delayed from over her shoulder once she finished casting. Thankfully, her matchstick had easily disappeared this time, just like he would have expected from her.

SPOILER!!: Bernie

Actually, that wasn't surprising; just disappointing. Bernie didn't say anything though but took her matchstick. She just did the wand movement, first, because it was actually a LOT of moving and swishing and she wasn't sure about this much flicking. Her poor (slightly) injured wand might not be able to take it.

SO ANYWAY, and then the BANG!s started happening, with Eiji going first??!?!? Erm? Was he alright? And then it happened to Naya, and Islay...

"Wowwww, you guys are like, bad at this," Bernie remarked with a snicker, though she was also a little bit confused????? Because, um, shouldn't the older kids already KNOW this spell? Wasn't it on the OWLs or at least the NEWTs?

She scoffed and tried the spell for herself. "Evan-ES-co!"

Yeah nothing. Nothing happening here! But hey, she was only a third year.

“Less attitude, Miss Grantham. There is no place for it, in my class.” He had heard her comment as he walked behind her and he wasn’t impressed. “Remember that magic can be very temperamental. I hope your classmates do not judge you as critically, when yours does not co-operate.” Carwyn added, giving her a disapproving look. He expected more from her, she was better than that.

What on earth was happening though? He could understand one or two wands, but the wands of his older students? … Not even just one of them either, multiple? Carwyn’s mind was whirring, but he still had a lesson to teach. He would talk to Malachi about it after the days lessons were through.

Moving on around the table, to continue making sure no-one else seemed to be having issues, Carwyn called out. “Five more minutes and then we will move onto the main activity for today.” He was happy to see that although there had been issues, students seemed to be vanishing their match sticks alright now. Weird. The next part was going to be great. As long as their wands and their magic co-operated.

OOC: Hi guys <3 With the added excitement, we’ll have another 5ish hours on this part of the lesson and then we will start moving on ^___^
