The mug was tilted to her lips but she paused to look skeptically over the rim at Williamson. “Sure, sure.’’ If he wanted it to be the couch, then the couch it was, she thought as she sipped the tea - which was yummy, by the way. Her nose was already discreetly sniffing for… foul odors. Ew.

Claudine felt her excitement shrinking when all of those questions were posed to her. The mug was lowered and surveyed Williamson. Were some of them necessary? A deep breath was taken before she launched head-on into the questions. “Just with the creatures studied since I started Hogwarts.’’ That was what? Almost three years of creature education? “I’ll be thirteen next July.” Pretty mature for an almost thirteen year old to figure out her life already, right?

Claudine was one of those rare persons who felt uncomfortable talking about herself. She supposed that stemmed from living in a world where the majority of persons liked to talk about themselves and her having to constantly listen to them. “I don’t have one as yet. I’ve found that I like most of them equally.” Suddenly, there were images of the Forest flashing through her mind. Claudine clutched at the mug with both hands until her knuckles turned white.

“Acromantulas… I’m terrified of acromantulas.’’ They were the only creatures she had encountered so far that she was scared of.
It WAS the couch though! Williamson eyed Claudine over the rim of his OWN mug, but didn't say anything else on the matter. He just slurped his tea like a crup at its water bowl.

"You'll be fourteen, you mean," he corrected her gently. Er? "Aren't you a third or fourth year?" He just thought she LOOKED young, but was pretty sure she wasn't TWELVE!!! Still, she was too young for an internship at this point. He'd circle back to that, but for now, he'd address what she said next, leaning in to make sure he'd heard her.

Ohhhh.

"Right, and I think I know why." Or something of it. He was fuzzy on the details, but he was pretty sure she was one of the students 'on probation' or 'on her last chance' or something like that. "The Forbidden Forest is forbidden for a reason, Claudine. I don't even like going there myself." And she wasn't the only one who was having flashbacks now, although his were incredibly fuzzy. For some reason, the image of a levitating blast-ended skrewt flying through the air at his students was coming to mind...

Willy shook his head to change the topic. "So," back to the internship thing, "you want to work with creatures to gain some experience, right? I'd recommend finding someone you know and offering to take care of their animals, or waiting until you're older." Sorry, but she deserved a frank answer. "Most businesses can't take on employees younger than of-age or nearly of-age wizards; it's just a liability thing." Although she could always work at a shop, like Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, which he had done! Heh.

"Also," and this was just an idea, "you can start narrowing down your area of interest, because you might want to specialize as you find animals you do or do not get along with." He'd go on, but he needed another sip of tea first.

The first year nodded. "I will." He would ask his parents if they knew Williamson in his next letter home. Maybe they had been friends back in school! Wouldn't that be pretty cool?!

Oh! Was Professor Williamson testing him? It seemed that way! Lukas sat up, brushing his hair back from his eyes so he could look up at the man. "Well I could talk to them, offer them food or treats," Not many treats so he wouldn't make them sick. "Work on cleaning up or something outside of their stalls so they can get used to me being around. Don't be to loud or try to touch them to quickly, let them come to me." His dad had always told him that. Allow a creature to come to you first, give it a chance to decide if it wants to be touched or not. There was more he could come up with but this was a start.
Aha! "Perfect answer," Williamson's face broke into a bit of a beam here, though it didn't last too long. He just wasn't as expressive and happy-go-lucky as he had been back in the day. But back to Lukas.

"So that's where I want YOU to start," he continued. "Start by building a relationship with them. I'm suggesting the winged horses to you, because they need a LOT of exercise, and we have a lot of grounds for them, but you're welcome to visit any of the animals here." WWW gestured out toward the creature sanctuary. "I mean, I think your grade is fine, but I've always found real-world experience to be a better teacher than a book. I used to bring my book down to the stables and out to the gardens to compare what the textbook said with what things actually looked and acted like." You know? Hogwarts was unique in this regard. Not all kids went to awesome magical boarding schools with lots of resources, apparently.
