She listened to the professor's explanation about the course, smiling to herself because she knew that she was one of the few students who preferred the theoretical portion to practical lessons. After a long relaxing summer break, she was ready to complete reading assignments and write essays again! At his question about risks associated with water, she glanced at the lake once and raised her hand. "You can be attacked by Grindylows, which are really aggressive water demons," she said. Weren't there some in the school lake??? "Definitely. Grindylows are a real threat and a nuisance as well. Very good Morin." He'd expected the mention of grindylows. There was a small list of creatures he expected to be mentioned by the end of this portion. The man was waiting to see who would hit the nail on the head, but that didn't make grindylows any less of a danger of the water. SPOILER!!: Rivers Quote:

Destruction by water, it happened more than people knew. Raising her hand, “It goes where it wants regardless of what’s in the way. Floods push the water where it wants how it wants, a door wont stop water from coming in.” She also knew drowning was a danger of water but she didn’t want to be THAT person this early in the morning. But Jina had mentioned the Grindylows and she had jumped right in but Charlie would pass on that type of information. "A good point right there, Rivers." Ha...ha ha rivers...another body of water. Okay, he was done. "Particularly true on the point of destruction. Floods can wreak serious havoc, they're especially an issue among muggles who don't have the magical means to put an end to them before they create real problems." From time to time, he watched the muggle news. It was sad, the things they faced because they weren't magically inclined. SPOILER!!: Lindsey Quote:

Now, however, it was time for class to begin. Naya turned her attention to the Headmaster. He wasted no time in getting things started. When the first question was posed, she raised her hand. The first thing that came to her mind was drowning. Considering that this was Defense Against the Dark Arts class, she decided to go in a different direction, “Well there are many creatures that live in different bodies of water. Some are harmless and others not so much. Where I come from there are sharks, alligators and other creatures that can injure or kill you.”
When she began to give her response, Trent listened on the chance she'd go ahead to name some of those creatures and to see if any of those creatures would hit the nail on the day's lesson. As it so happened, none did, but "Correct. There are quite a few creatures who wouldn't mind taking a bite out of you if you find yourself in the wrong body of water. They don't have to be magical either. Sharks, alligators and the like are equally capable hunters."
Even if the former wasn't necessarily looking to eat people. Misunderstood thing, it was. SPOILER!!: Blaze Quote:

The Slytherin was happy standing by herself as much as you can and ignoring everyone. Or almost everyone. Cole got a small smile of acknowledgement and was actually considering going to stand by him when he turned to Naya. Oh.
Claudine was going to pretend that didn’t hurt; the smile slipped off of her face quickly and she averted her eyes towards the Lake instead. Of course Cole was going to spend his time with her in every lesson. She didn’t know how long she stared out there but soon things were getting started.
Hmmm.
Risks that go with bodies of water?
Claudine thought before raising her hand. “One can stumble upon Merpeople’s dwelling and they might not take too well to sudden intruders.’’
With the earlier mention of grindylows, he knew it was only a matter of time before someone else mentioned their habitat buddies. "Yes, good. Merpeople do tend to stick to their colonies but they aren't fond of others stumbling in or threatening their borders too closely."
He didn't need to explain what happened when people did, did he? They were all clear on that?
Moving on. SPOILER!!: Preston Quote:

He raised his hand slowly, "There's the issue of underwater currents, that can't be seen from the surface so you don't know you're in danger until you've got into the water." His friend Noel from Beaubaxtons could tell them first hand what that had been like. It had taken six of them to get him out. "Sometimes even the strongest of swimmers find themselves in trouble." He was really hoping that they were not going into the lake in this lesson. "Oh, true. Good one." He hadn't been thinking about underwater currents at all but now that he was, he could see to an uncomfortably vivid level, the outcome of undercurrents. He'd had enough warnings in his time and wasn't the type to really go swimming when at the beach but the threat was there all the same. "A silent danger, that one. All the more dangerous without a bubble head charm." Muggles really did have a hard life, didn't they? SPOILER!!: Ryan Quote:

Blake's answering were almost always of the mundane rather than magical answer, you'd think after starting his 3rd year he'd have more magical answers.
... "Yes." Trent conceded. "And that's as good a reason as ever not to get into the water. Learning to swim should be a prerequisite for partaking in anything by a body of water."
Which...brought him to his own question. "Can you swim, Ryan?" Because.... SPOILER!!: Song Quote:

Wonderful.
She was not skittish, okay? He had just SNUCK UP on her practically. "Oh...yes, I think I am. This seems a whole lot more exciting than homeschool right now....no practical lessons there," she said gently. She was only assuming this was going to be practical. They were outside! She glanced in the boy's direction, very apologetic she didn't remember his name. He was the Ravenclaw prefect, too. She would learn eventually!
But there was Noah, too, and she nodded at the water. "I reckon there's a reason we're by the lake," she whispered in reply.
AND CLASS WAS STARTING. Headmaster Trent had told her to loosen up so she did, letting her hands hang at her sides. Loooosely. His question sparked her to think logically about water. Water wasn't scary to only wizards...it was scary to muggles, too. "Well, especially for people who can't swim, just stepping into the water can be a risk of drowning. Well - not literally stepping in - but you know what I mean." Maybe her answer wasn't the most profound, but she didn't know how to swim SUPER WELL. She was about to tack on something a bit more intelligent, but other people spoke up, so she bit her tongue and listened. Being intelligent isn't all about showing off in class...it's performing well on examinations and making logical decisions under pressure. She reminded herself.
Was...was...he going to have to worry about her, too? She was the second student in the space of 5 minutes to mention drowning, specifically getting into the water without knowing how to swim. "Yes.....and I hope you aren't one of them that...can't...swim, yeah?" Because...um....the lake.
Some would end up in there. SPOILER!!: McCarthy Quote:

He had found her on multiple terms during the early morning training, so he had to know her final year, all her hopes and dreams went around a certain sport and now those dreams were all crashing down around her.
She went silent as the class began and just stood near and listened. Crossing her arms as she watched the lake her eyes went around as people answered the questions. What could be a problem with water that hadn't been said already? Creatures, drowning, floods, it seemed all there, at least she thought it seemed all there, so maybe she could just stay quiet.
Where was Gunnar when you needed him....
She would mirror him later, for now, she had thought of something, "Hurricanes, they can destroy pretty much anything in their path if they are strong enough."
Ooookay.
He was just gonna leave that where it was. If she said she was fine...he was gonna leave her and her teenage hormones to continue being fine and he would just stand over here and nod along.
Back to the topic at hand. "Huh. I suppose you're right about that." When he'd mentioned water, he hadn't been thinking in the form of precipitation but McCarthy had a point there. "Natural disasters tend to be destructive, on principle." SPOILER!!: Jones Quote:

Focusing on the lesson for today, he let out a small smile as the headmaster mentioned a practical lesson. Having aced his NEWT in DADA, this was always something he’d found came natural to him. Sure, he wasn’t exactly a Mad Eye Moody or a Harry Potter but he enjoyed this subject and that alone made him go the extra mile to improve.
What were the dangers of water? ”Well, as a few have said already, there are several different types of creatures to be wary of in the lake. Grindylow’s, Selkies and Merpeople to name but two. There’s also the giant squid her but it tends to be a little more friendly”. Having run amuck of a few Grindylow’s in his previous years at Hogwarts and seen how that had affected some of his friends, he respected the water and the creatures inside it enough not to go too deep into its midst’s. ” Also, one has to be weary of breathing under water in general. If you’re too deep and your charms fail or your time runs out with your gilyweed, you could end up drowning so if you’re going under, you need to be prepared” . He could be wrong but he had a feeling they might end up going down into the lake and if that was so, he was going to be prepared. He wouldn’t let one of his friends get snatched up by a Grindylow again.
Talk about packing in a ton of responses. This Ravenclaw did have a tendency to go off on small tangents, this one not as long as it could have been, somewhat repetitive given the answers prior to his own but the man supposed that once that Ravenclaw brain got going, there was little in the way of a filter. "All those are correct, yes. Not knowing how to swim would increase the danger there, too. You'd be rendered in the same position as a muggle." And they didn't always fare well against the elements. SPOILER!!: Amstern Quote:
Originally Posted by Chelliephone It was good they were outside, because it certainly felt like there were a lot of students. K kept her head down for the most part, willing herself to wake up. The good part of this lesson so far is that it was outdoors, and right by the lake, so perhaps she could draw on that and attempt to enjoy it. She was so focused on that and trying to wake up, she didn't notice any other of the students until her name was spoken.
Looking up, she could see Avalon from the train. Nice person if K remembered correctly, but seemed very chipper for the morning. Which wasn't a probably, except the Amstern could not feign the same attitude. So she just mumbled back, "Good morning. And thanks." Hufflepuff seemed good so far. Hearing her name from somewhere else as well, K turned her and smiled and nodded her greeting at Islay as well, "Hello".
But then, she could feel the Headmaster's eyes on her and asking her a question? Forgetting something? K glanced down to confirm she did have her book bag, and yes, she was actually wearing her school robes. She had even decided to hang them up the night before instead of leaving them in her trunk so the wrinkles should be gone.
But then she remembered manners were a thing. And she had tried to sneak in without giving a proper greeting. Perhaps that? Worth a try anyways. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent." And if that worked, she'd have to make note of it for later.
But then class was starting, so K promptly clamped her mouth shut while it began and tried to focus her attention on the Headmaster's introduction. What were the concerns that came with bodies of water? K raised her hand up a little, waiting for others to finish their answers before she supplied hers. "Shark attacks."
Because he had said muggle concerns could be answered as well, right?
That wasn't so hard now was it?
The Headmaster inclined his head toward the Hufflepuff when she finally offered up a greeting. "Good morning." He returned, willing to put it behind him and get on with the lesson.
Which had turned into a talk on shark attacks. Lindsey had mentioned something about sharks, too, hadn't she? "Accidental as it often is, shark attacks are a very real danger when you enter some waters, yes." SPOILER!!: Tamesis Quote:

She was fed and watered and most importantly, ready to go. ”Morning, Professor.” She said, wiggling her fingers as she stretched and wiggled her her shoulders. Seemed the rain from last night had cleared up a bit, but it was Scotland… They could be soaked within five minutes.
Looking up as the Professor started the class, she nodded here and there. Yupyup. She was listening. ”Uh, drowning?!” Whoops. Maybe should have expanded on that a bit. ”Though really, you can drown with much less water than is in the lake, even less than is held in a basin sooo….” Hope no-one was scared of water. "Though I guess some don't like that they can't see under water that well? She was used to salty, cold water in her face from swimming in the Firth of Clyde.
Count that as the third student to mention drowning and he was now becoming somewhat concerned that they may need to move this lesson further away from the lake than he'd expected.
Was this the point when he became concerned...because...he was getting concerned. "Drowning....yes......." Granted, there were a ton of other things that could kill them before they had the chance to drown but with how pessimistic these kiddos already were...maybe...he'd just...not.... Cecelia didn't think water was THAT terrifying, but she WAS aware of how much could go wrong when you were hanging out in or around it. The swimming thing she had DOWN, but water could be unpredictable and SO could the stuff that lived IN it. Also, just USING it could get you into LOADS of trouble. Don't think for a SECOND she'd forgotten about soaking that AWFUL french headmistress. It had been an accident THEN but she really didn't regret it. That woman was the WORST. "Headmaster, the temperature of the water can be dangerous. Like, if it's really cold and you're in it for a long time, your body loses heat and you get super sick. It could even kill you." She eyed the lake and then him and then nodded her head solemnly.
Heh. Of course he could take the credit. Wouldn't want Precious Bean #3 becoming the bad guy. He, on the other hand, was perfectly comfortable being the bad guy if it meant the students learned. It would truly be no skin off his back. "A fair point, Summers. Hypothermia can take you out just the same as any creature that might be lurking in the water." Warming charms helped with that, to be sure, but not everyone had the luxury and even if they did, sometimes that was the easiest way to walk into a statute breech. Oh hey you survived that freezing water, you must be a wizard or something! SPOILER!!: Vance Quote:

It was a pity that they according to Headmaster Trent weren't going to be seeing any merpeople today but maybe some other time?
The first question was rolled out upon the lesson's start and Cole mulled on his answer for a bit as his peers mentioned drowning and grindylows and gillyweed and other stuff. Remembering the summer when Isabel had been burned by a jellyfish very vividly Cole raised his hand and said "If you swim in the ocean you have to be wary of jellyfish that come close to the shore with changing tides and weather because my sister got burned badly by one when she was five and it was horrible to see." "Absolutely. Benign as their name may sound, jellyfish can be a force to be reckoned with and they do happen to inhabit bodies of water. Some are highly venomous. Not the sort you want wrapping around your legs." As they tended to do, even if only on accident and a shift of the current.
He wasn't much of a creature expert but he'd heard of box jellies on a vacaction down under. It had been all the motivation he'd needed to stay on the sand and build little castles with Mavis. Good trip. SPOILER!!: Lil Trent Quote:

unTIL his Daddee was all like call me Headmaster Trent blah blah BLEH. And it felt like a direct ATTACK on his son. Cuz like what, Daddee? HUH?!? Who else was gunna call him anything but Headmaster or Professor? Oh yeah. That’s right. His child.
The blatant call out for what felt like to mind his manners was capital H hurtful.
The blonde Gryffindor completely deflated. Who wanted to be mature anyway? It sounded lame. He was going back to being sensitive.
He didn’t answer but he did give his Daddee a look of utter betrayal.
Sweet Merlin, what had he done this time?? The lesson had barely started and his son was already looking like a kicked cruppy.
Where had he gone wrong?
What was he already forgetting? How soon would Talia allow him to transfer the boy so he can start enjoying his classes and his school life? It hurt, ruining things even when he was doing nothing. SPOILER!!: Sinclair Quote:

But then Avalon heard her give another curt reply to a different student, which partially relieved her. At least it wasn't just her. Maybe Kimmie just had a rough first night. Either way, it was fine, because Avalon wasn't one to chat much after class began anyway.
Considering the first question about water, Avalon's mind immediately went to drowning or dangerous creatures. But it seemed that her classmates already covered those bases. She glanced out at the lake, noticing its extra murky color. It was pretty much impossible to see anything inside, which spurred her thinking. She raised her hand. "Water can be risky because it conceals things, like currents, creatures, or dangerous plants. You often don't know what might be beneath the surface, especially if it's nighttime or if the water is so dark that you can't see through it." That was why she never swam in that disgusting lake behind their old house in Ashwell. Who knew what kind of flesh-eating bacteria was in that? "Yes, yes good, Sinclair. Water does have the ability to conceal. Sometimes, it's difficult to tell what lurks in its murky depths. One should always exercise caution--especially if you can't see the bottom."
Bigger things liked to live in bodies of water that were deep enough to support their frame. Bigger things tended to like eating littler things and as it so happened, people were the littler things when it came to these predators. SPOILER!!: Renaldi Quote:

Water could easily end you if it wanted, basically. "That's a different kind of danger, a more passive one. I like it." Liked the thinking that wasn't so linear as to only be how water could actively get you killed. "In a pinch, wizards wouldn't have the same issue." Not so long as aguamenti remained a real spell. "But muggles do tend to fare a little worse when stranded out at sea." SPOILER!!: Donovan Quote:

The early morning sunshine and slight breeze from being so near to the water at this time of day was also helpful in keeping his young mind alert and ready for whatever was to come.
It wasn't to big of a surprise really for the topic to be about water considering where they were all gathered. Lukas turned his blue-gray eyes onto the lake. He knew exactly what lurked in its depths courtesy of his much older siblings. All the obvious answers coming quickly to his mind, specially drowning and all things creature related. Those weren't the only dangers though. Knowing the water you were heading into was extremely important. "Drop-off points can be very dangerous. If you're out in open water or in a body of water that you're unused to it can catch you completely off-guard and have serious consequences." Especially if you didn't know how to swim or where little kids were involved.
Drop offs were another passive sort of way the water could end up offing you, and another his own mind hadn't gone to when he'd first posed the question. "That's a good point, yes. If you don't know where you're going or how far the bed sprawls, you could find yourself descending a sudden drop off and that alone is panic inducing." Panic was one of the fastest ways to get yourself drowned.
Luckily, they didn't have that worry here today. SPOILER!!: Upstead Quote:

Oh look, a Bellchant. "Good morning, Isla," he greeted her, a pleasant smile on his face. "Nice day for it." That wouldn't last, Nem wagered.
Anyway, moving on. And, for the record, Nem had few plans to call Trent 'Headmaster' rather than 'Professor'. As well as preferring to give him the downgrade, Nem felt it could also do his son some good. He was very thoughtful like that.
The preludial mention of something 'to get them all thinking' was not really all that promising to Nem, especially when it was swiftly followed by 'ease you back into the learning process'. It only served to highlight the fact that the first few lessons of the term were extra insulting in their simplicity, and Nem huffed a sigh and glanced out at the water, twisting the ring on his thumb exactly three times before raising a hand. "People have been known to hide armies of Inferi in large bodies of water - including this large body of water." Nice and loud for the people in the back. "So who's to say that when you go for a dip in a lake or river or anywhere, really, that you're not gonna get a friendly visit from a bunch of reanimated corpses? You might think that's a fish tickling your foot, but could be there's something trying to grab you and drag you under." Flashing a pleasant smile, Nem hooked his thumbs into his pockets and fell silent again.
......
Trent's jaw fell slack at that response. Upstead wasn't wrong but given the penchant of some students to...oh.... panic, he really wished this answer could've been saved for another day when they were back inside the castle. The pleasant smile at the end, it was the period at the end of a rather poignant sentence. "Right." He cleared his throat, deciding the fact none had taken off running yet meant they were getting better at this. "Yes, inferi sometimes can be hidden there. Yes." Just. Yes? Headmaster Trent. Professor Trent. Something Trent. She had no idea what amenable meant, but okay. Anyway, question time! She raised her hand. "I think one of the biggest dangers is that humans aren't adapted to water as much as they are land. This can get them in trouble in both magical and mundane ways," she said. "Our bodies aren't made for water, so there's tons of situations we can get into that water just makes even worse for us."
A nice swim in the lake was a completely different situation than drowning or a tsunami or something. "Huh. That's a good point actually. Not only can water be a problem, but our own bodies and their lack of preparedness when it comes to bodies of water."
This was starting to become an impressive list of all the ways they could die by water. Not his original intention and he was still holding out for someone to hit the nail on the head but for now, these students were thinking outside of the box he'd set before them and placed flashing lights around. A student earlier brought it up and now she's been thinking about it. She's hoping that that is not the case. Jillian is not ready for this.
Her gaze returned to headmaster Trent when he raised his first question as always.... You know, before he discusses the activity involved today. Again, she is hoping that it won't be swimming in that water. "Uhmm..." she raised her hand to answer "i think it's not just the creatures living in the water that makes it risky but it's the mentality that in large bodies of water where it is deep, vast and dark, we tend to associate it with something dangerous" she replied. It's the fear of the unknown because they don't really know what's down there. "I suppose you've got a point on that one. Even in relatively harmless bodies of water, the depth can bring on a strong sense of foreboding." Something was lurking, something had to be lurking. Why else would the water look so intimidating? She was wearing the biggest, most wide awake smile she could muster. Her left eye might've twitched a little. "Hello, Headmaster. Such a beautiful morning, isn't it?"
Hopefully that was good enough.
She strolled over to where the rest of her classmates were once the lesson officially began. Risks with water? Oh! Her hand went up. "Sometimes trash gets into the water and then fish and whales and probably merpeople eat that trash. Bad things happen when trash is eaten." She guessed. She never ate it.
....um..... "Are you alright...?" That smile almost looked like it hurt. He was glad she got the point and hoped he wouldn't need to remind her further but Merlin what if it got stuck that way? Would she need help reconstructing it?

The lesson had begun and the Headmaster was now fully addressing the students, her attention on him as he asked his first question about the risks of large bodies of water. Waiting for her turn to answer as others responded very quickly, with some facts she hadn't heard yet! She raised her hand before speaking clearly to make sure she was heard, "Whether it be magical or mundane water sir, there may be hidden debris or underwater hazards which can cause injury, including weeds and plants which can entangle people or creatures under the water. It can be very difficult to get out.." "Getting trapped in or under water can definitely become a frightening experience. I can only imagine the first few moments, knowing you're stuck but not what has you stuck." The panic. Some of the students insisted on panic no matter how many lessons they had with him. They were the least likely to make it out of situations like that unless they improved. SPOILER!!: English Quote:

He frowned to himself, then got distracted by the weird magical names people were throwing around. There was also friendly squids!? Wow. Cool! He made a mental note to visit the library afterwards. There was just so much to learn, and he was ready!
Oh wait - corpses!!??? He threw a disturbed look at the lake. Here!? He took a step backwards towards the castle. He ... were they... going to learn how to defend themselves from that? Normally, the idea of a corpse wasn't gross - scientifically, it was even exciting, but one that tried to drag you underwater... he didn't know how to swim well. He wasn't so sure he wanted to experience that. If they were allowed to safely dissect it, however... THAT would be GREAT! "Uuugh... mosquitoes and other bugs that may be carrying diseases lay their eggs in still water." he said as he lowered his hand, then raised it again as if he thought of something. "Are there corpses that drag you in still there?" So that he'd know if it was safe to come closer.
Theeeeere was the look he expected the moment Upstead mentioned inferi in the lake. It was only a matter of who and in this case, it was this one.
Bugs and diseases aside, the man felt the need to set the record straight. "There are no inferi left in the great lake. It was scoured and cleaned. You've got nothing to worry about."
...In the context of inferi. Still plenty of other things that could kill him down there but there was no need to bring that up. SPOILER!!: Grantham Quote:

Her mum, a nurse, had told her that one. And as for her answer, "We have a giant squid here at Hogwarts. He might not like ya and might drown you on purpose." Which would at least be an epic way to die.
She hadn't yet encountered Bartholomew Henry though, even though she'd tried on at least two occasions to get him to the surface of the lake.

Hm. Interesting.
Surely Headmaster Trent would fully prepare them before forcing them to face something dangerous. SURELY.
Since this was a class for defense against dark arts, Louise thought how the two might be related and then raised her hands. "There are lots of creatures in the water, some that want to eat us and some that may just get territorial and may try to harm us. Or, err.. anyone who got in the water. So we may have to learn how to defend ourselves against them." HINT HINT. Defend. Geddit?
Vague answer was vague.
Malachi nodded slowly at the girl. "Right...yes...that's why we're here today. We're gonna learn just a bit more of that defending you're talking about."
So in a sense, she wasn't wrong, but he'd been hoping she was more specific. SPOILER!!: Castillo Quote:

Especially returning to a dormitory sans Eloise Fairfield. That was quite nice. Nina liked that bit.
Speaking of which, she looked around to see if the Slytherin would be present for this lesson. It wasn’t long that she spent looking though because Professor Trent was soon addressing the class. She knew the moment he explained that there would be theory there would likely be a chorus of complaints from her peers. Nina, however, quite liked the theory. She didn’t mind writing essays and reading the textbook. Attending a practical lesson with Headmaster Trent was always something she looked forward to though. He was so pretty (and sensible—which made him even prettier, in her opinion).
His question opened up way for many possibilities. Nina could think of about a million dangers concerned with bodies of water. Her biggest fear was sharks. Of course drowning had to be mentioned at least ten times. Was anyone even listening? Nina was. For the record. A little too well because these answers were incredibly unnerving. She liked Nemesis’ and Michael's the least. Disease? Armies of inferi? She made sure to look back at their Headmaster after each of these remarks from her classmate. Was she looking for some sort of assurance that they would not be exposing themselves to such things today? Absolutely.
Never in her two (and a half) years at Hogwarts did she enter the lake and after hearing all of this, she most definitely never would. Thanks. She hated it. When it came to Nina, she politely raised her hand and waited her turn. ”In cases where the water isn’t as clear, there’s always the risk that you will cut yourself on coral or rocks, which could result in infection. Some species of coral contain venom too.” Double dangerous. Questions like this were very unnerving. She trusted that Headmaster Trent wouldn't... let anything horrible happen during his class... But she still worried. Like, a lot.
And each time she looked to him, the Headmaster tried his best to give her a reassuring look. There was nothing to worry about. They would walk away from this lake safe and sound at the end of all this--so long as they did what they were told.
Castillo was not one of the students he worried about where that was concerned. "Infection after a nasty scrape with coral sounds like a horrible way to go." No, really. Of all the ways to go, that had to be one of the least eventful and possibly one of the more unfortunate for its simplicity. One might never see it coming. SPOILER!!: Nam Quote:

Theory and practice was a good mantra for learning or so Noah thought.
Noah hadn't known what to expect from the Headmaster but he could say that he was pleasantly surprised how candid he was. He liked that.
His eyes drifted towards the Lake and he paused, thinking through the Headmaster's first question. What risks often go hand in hand with bodies of water? Well there were many... Creatures, and whatnot.. He listened to his peers offer up suggestions, smiling when Kimmie mentioned shark attacks and fought off a chuckle when Louise (was it?) was punny. He continued thinking, wondering what else he could offer as contribution to their discussion.
He voiced his opinion. "Some bodies of water can have hidden currents that a swimmer may not be able to see." "Absolutely. And those currents are no joke. They can suck you further out and you'll be in a bigger predicament than you ever saw coming." Water currents were yet another reason Malachi didn't try going out too far when he went to the beach and honestly, who went there to swim anyway? There were so many things that could get you and the pay off was disproportionate. SPOILER!!: Gunter Quote:

Now that everyone was settled and most, if not all, of the students had arrived the class had begun. Dylan did his best to pay attention to everything he was saying. It was important to him that he was attentive, seeing as he ignored him in the first place. Water, huh? Well water could have many different dangers. There were things like Tsunami's that could take out entire towns, or dangerous creatures that could lurk in the water and bite off an arm when you weren't paying attention. But he was sure the professor wasn't looking for anything that drastic. No he was probably looking for something along the lines of eroding away rocks or flipping boats.
Dylan raised his hand and waited to be called on before answering. "Those who tend to live on or near the water have to be sure to have their house raised so as not to flood any part of it. I've seen some houses on stilts even!" His face flushed red again. That wasn't very loud, and he was lucky to be sitting closer to the professor otherwise he probably wouldn't have heard him. Dylan was not a very loud person, and he really didn't like answering questions in front of this many people, but after the incident upon walking in, especially since he looked so disheveled, he wanted to be sure Professor Trent knew he was paying attention. "Right you are. It's why in some cases, people are advised against building there in the first place. It's a poor investment if every time it rains you need to do more fixer uppers." Living by the sea sounded lovely and maybe he would one day, but for now he was content with the location of his home.
Even with his enthusiasm rising, the boy remained soft spoken. Whether this would turn out to be a good thing was yet to be seen, but for now...after having taught some loud students in the previous year, he'd take it. SPOILER!!: Moreau Quote:

The brunette listened to the topics that her fellow classmates had brought up and nodded at this one and that one. Noah’s especially got a little nod, as it had made her immediately think of how she had almost been pulled into a current once as a child when she visited the Isles with her family. If it weren’t for that one wizard she likely wouldn’t have been here today – the idea just made her shudder. Raising her hand and waaaaiting to be called on Islay finally spoke up.
”All water has different living matter in it – not the creatures such as grindylow or fish, but microorganisms such as bacteria and microbes in it…some of which can cause infections in the central nervous system of homosapiens” she paused for a moment, "or so I’ve been told by my aunt” she shrugged and gave a small nod of her head as if punctuating her sentence with a physical period.
That was...oddly scientific for an answer on essentially how water could kill you. Malachi found himself nodding along. It was again, far away from the answer he was looking for but that didn't mean it was wrong, not by a long shot. "True. What can start out as a satisfying day by a river or the sea could quickly turn into a visit at Mungo's and some uncomfortable treatments." Not fun. SPOILER!!: McCarthy Quote:

He nudged him with his elbow and whispered, "What's going on with you?" He was super discreet, whispering and all, trying not to get them in trouble with his dad.
And then Bernie's answer caught his attention. "You think he'd do that?" he blurted out after her. He'd never seen the squid himself, but would he really drown you on purpose? OH! That reminded him... and he raised his hand. "I'm pretty sure there's a kind of water plant, it sort of looks like seaweed, but it can wrap one of its leafy vine tendrils around your leg and pull you under!" And that would be a water hazard for sure, because it could drown you too, just like the squid apparently would!
See, Grantham? This is why we don't spread rumours. "Bartholomew Henry will do no such thing." He assured, sparing another glance over at Bernadette. Was he going to need to launch a campaign around the squid? Who even started the idea that he'd drown people? 'And you're right. So she resisted the urge. Barely.
Oh, and she was definitely paying attention, yes. She jotted down a few notes from some of her classmates' answers, and she would've offered an answer of her own, but any that she would've said had already been said by someone else. And she didn't see the point in repeating a bunch of things, y'know?
So she was quiet for now, trying to balance her attention between focusing on everyone's answers and the pretty scenery.

Dangers? Around water? Oh, this seventh year had some FIRST hand experience with that and he was in enough of a mood to not be able to resist offering up his own sort of response in snarky throw back. It was a coping mechanism to cope with...his own fear of water...and drowning. And certain people could do without calling him out on the defensive snark, okay?
"It's not always the water itself you have to be concerned with," he offered casually while NOT glancing around to see if a certain Ravenclaw was present to hear his offering. "People around you while around the water can be just as much cause for danger in their own panic. Especially if they happen to be wielding oars." "Oddly specific...." And he hadn't missed the way the boy's gaze had briefly wandered but he was staying out of that one. Why the students had oars they were wielding in water was something for someone else to worry about. Those fears combined made DADA the trifecta of scariness, but regardless of how he felt, he was here on time and ready to learn… or try to, anyway.
Eager not to make a mistake straight out of the gate, Heath listened intently to the headmaster's every word, even the opening spiel about not complaining. There was no need to worry about that! Frankly, Heath didn't find essays or reading assignments boring at all, and even if that were the case, he wasn't dumb enough to voice that opinion! So anyway, water dangers…
Heath's first thoughts turned to grindylows, but that was, like, the first thing said. What a shock! Then he thought of other creatures like merpeople, sharks, jellyfish, and parasites, but all of those things had been said too. He was beginning to get really frustrated! Every time he came up with something to say, somebody else said it first! He was officially out of ideas, so now what? If he repeated answers, he'd look stupid, but if he didn't say anything, he'd look like he wasn't paying attention!
Heath stared out at the lake, hoping the water would jog his memory. Eventually, he remembered a story his uncle told about some toxic algal bloom he'd encountered at work. He quickly raised his hand and said, "Water is home to some types of algae that are toxic to wildlife and humans." "That it is." He agreed. Not something they had to worry about in the lake today but something for them to keep in mind in general. There were too many people who saw bodies of water and decided to jump in with little information. It was playing fast and loose. Nothing that he thought he'd have to drive that home. By now, the man was beginning to think the students were well aware of the dangers of random bodies of water. SPOILER!!: Rose Quote:

Also, all the mentions of drowning had the Gryffindor wondering if her peers couldn't swim? Perhaps Hogwarts needed to mandate swimming lessons, since that was a mundane life skill.
What were other dangers present in bodies of water? Grindelows and merpeople were mentioned. Hurricanes. Staring out at the body of the water for inspiration, she raised her hand finally, "There's jelly fish, particularly present in oceans and they tend to blend in making them impossible to see. They don't appear dangerous, but if you get stung... it's quite painful, which I think I read something about peeing on a jellyfish sting to stop the pain."
And another for jellyfish. Maybe more students understood the dangers of those floating sacks of jelly than he'd first thought. Trent nodded at the Prefects reply. Still, he was in his fifth year now and had his OWLs exams coming up at the end of the year. If he did not start paying attention in classes now he was doomed to fail. So taking his eyes off of the rippling water he waited for the next question because most the answers had already been given.
Nothing? Really? Not off to a brilliant start for his OWL year. Malachi spared the boy a glance but when nothing was coming, he knew it was time to move the class forward.
Well that had certainly been eye opening. The answers were diverse, to be sure, and he was now a little concerned by how obsessed with drowning his students were but of all the answers, no one had managed to touch on the topic of the day's lesson. He supposed when presented with the lake, there were too many other more obvious choices that could've been the answer. Perhaps he should've had the lesson back in room 3C afterall. It was splendid for illusion lessons and the man was starting to think a river may have been a better hint for some.
No matter, they weren't required to guess what the lesson was, only what could go wrong when present by a body of water. That they had nailed. "A lot of mundane answers, a magical one here and there. I like to see you all thinking so early in the morning and am now desperately hoping you can all swim or at the least avoid things nimbly. Continuing along this strain, I'd like to share another danger that can be present in bodies of water; the kelpie." Literally a water demon, literally came to no one's mind. Everyone was too busy worrying about water filled lungs and poison fungus.
This was the danger they would be facing today. Oooo. Aaaaa. No? Okay, moving on. "This creature is native to our own home here in Britain." So more applicable to them than certain other creatures they could learn about. "They're water demons that can change form but usually take on the appearance of horses. This is so they can lure unsuspecting travellers onto their backs before dragging them down into the water where they feast on them. What kind of nut hops on the back of a random horse that appears out by water is beyond me, but they haven't gone extinct so there must be plenty." There was a lesson to be learned there. Malachi wasn't sure how many of his students would wind up by a body of water and thoughtlessly hop onto the first horse that appeared but he had a few in mind. "Some of you may already know of one famous kelpie, the famed Loch Ness Monster. To get the best of one, you'll need the placement charm and a bridle. Get that on one and you should be fine." To get the basics out of the way. "That said, I'd like to hear from you. Say you ran into a kelpie, what's your strategy? Give me your gut reactions. I wanna hear battle plans." Give him faith you would survive. Go. OOC:Second question is up! Any and all plans and strategies are welcome, however your charrie thinks they would react upon encountering a kelpie. Trent has already told them how to stop it, he's now asking how they'd pull it of--if they would. Running for your life is always a good answer We'll move to the mini activity in another 22-24 hrs.
