Step one of staying out of trouble was smiling ~~like a freak~~ so here Bernie was, smiling smiling smiling, even though she didn't really have anything to smile about, and even though her mouth was starting to hurt from all this grinning.

But look! Look at that tow-headed boy over there! It was, "BLAAAAAAAKE RYAN!" Now Bernie was smiling for real as she plopped down beside him. "Whatcha eating?" And could they feed it to the squid, or....?
