It was easy to give in and let him hide away when he wanted - those big, sad, blue eyes always did the trick - but Jake had been informed multiple times now that it would be a lot better in the long run if they encouraged Ezra away from that tendency, provided whatever it was that he was facing wasn't actually life threatening.
... Although Bunz could very well be considered such, depending on the mood you caught her in. "Well, we're all still learning, really, aren't we?" Or they should be, anyway. Even old gargoy-... distinguished ladies of a certain age like Bunz.
But there it was. Something was always just so amusing, so satisfying about the surprise he was met with after mentioning his career track. Yes, Jake realised he probably should have been a bit more... upset? Offended? Ashamed? By the reactions, but ultimately... it was just funny. "One of the big secrets of the universe. But I'm glad your boy's doing well. You must be very proud." Was he jealous? No. Yes. No. Maybe a little. He didn't even know where Daxton was these days - it was only through Aslan that he knew he was still alive - and it had been years since he'd sought out an update from the Toussaints, so as far as he knew, the boy had squandered the massive amounts of potential he'd once had. And of course Jake still felt responsible, of course he still bore that guilt. He squeezed Ezra's shoulders, more to comfort himself than his son, and smiled all the same.
But Bunz was right (gasp), it was time to be getting on with the day, too many kids at home to spend much time lingering around Diagon Alley. "Yes, of course. Very... nice." Sure, that. "Ez, say goodbye." Ezra - still suspicious, still ready to scream if the woman made the slightest sudden movement, and also now intrigued as to who she even was - stared for a moment in the general direction of her very red hair. After a pause, he did speak. "Goodbye, Mrs Old Lady." There. Could they go now? Jake made a noise that sounded suspiciously like he was trying to cover up a spluttering laugh with a cough. Ahem, ahem, ahahahahaHEM. "Yes, well, uh... we'll just be going, have a lovely day!" And he whisked Ezra out of there, as quickly as he could. Bunz did not wish to look up on the face of her AtTaCKeR, Upstead. Don't drag the boy in front like he's a human shield. She wasn't up for doing anything serious to him and his family.........today. But she would be having words with Ethan, and the Kettleburns, and possibly the Tates, or whoever else in her circle that had been in communication with this Hufflemess Hit Wizard or whatever he was.
"I am." Proud, that is. She had no idea of course that one of Davie's classmates was in fact Upstead's son; the fact that even one of her former students had a child his same age (looking at you, Celandine Toussaint) was disturbing enough.
She let out a loud HUFF at the little Upstead offspring's name for her. HOW RUDE! She wasn't old! She was DISTINGUISHED! She had aged with GRACE and STYLE! Why the nerve--- she should have given the boy something to cry about the FIRST TIME SHE'D RUN INTO HIM---!!!!!!! "GOOD DAY TO YOU, UPSTEAD," the redhead roared before they had the GOOD SENSE to poof away. WHY SHE OUGHTA.....!
Shaking her head furiously, but without further ado, Annie took off up the street, in the opposite direction of the Upsteads. She was tempted to jinx them as they disappeared but....she knew her husband wouldn't approve, and she was trying SO HARD to behave today, so....that was that.
