For a brief moment, David's face changed into one of momentary confusion and---if possible, disgust--- at the word auror. He thought that career was beneath him, frankly. There were far too many trigger-happy fools already working as aurors, and the idea of law enforcement, in general, did not agree with him. He could debate the legality of certain actions all day. What was exciting about flashy spells and duels and puffs of smoke? There was no finesse, no subtlety, no invention involved in law enforcement. And then there was the word itself: enforcement. Harsh. Unimaginative. Brusque. Like most people who worked in that field. Like the ones that had harassed his father back in the day. Like the ones that were his friends' parents. Fools, most of them.
No, not all quick and competent spellcasters belonged in law enforcement.
"No," David responded aloud. He wasn't about to tell her what he was aspiring to do, as it didn't concern her for one reason, and for another, if he told her, then it would defeat of the purpose of these unspeakable aspirations. See how that worked? Even though he was as even-keeled as a boulder in a windstorm, David wasn't a particularly open person, especially not around someone with the temper of a veela.
As to the familiarity of his name........... well, that happened sometimes. Nothing usual to react to here. He shrugged again, still standing by the bench and rubbish bin. For some reason, he felt as though Valerie had something else to say? so he didn't immediately walk off. He was curious if she actually recognized him or was just being...eh, polite? Or was she just doing the same thing he had just recently done to her?
Hmm.
