Since they were allowed to guess, she hopes that hers would be correct "Professor..." she raised her hand a bit "I'm not sure but I guess this has something to do with Neville Longbottom's sorting during his first year at Hogwarts. He asked the sorting hat to be in Hufflepuff" she shrugged.
Uhmm... Yeah, still not entirely sure of her guess.
It was either that or the one about Hannah Abbott. Those were the only things she can think of. Unless her group have more to say. Gabi appreciated the effort on the prefect's part, even though it was obvious she wasn't entirely sure of her answer. "That's a good answer, Prefect Kim! As some others have said, Neville was not entirely sure about his sorting when he first came to school. Hufflepuff seemed a much better fit for him, giving how timid he was," she elaborated with an encouraging smile at her. Quote:

How's it going?
"The hat belonged to Godric Gryffindor originally, and Neville was a Gryffindor. Probably why it was willing to help him out in time of need. Also does the real hat smell like this?"
"Exactly, it proved that he was INDEED a true Gryffindor," Gabi smiled at Phoebe's answer and nodded. "Although I don't know about the smell of the hat...I can't say I've been around it enough lately to tell," she added. She couldn't imagine the thing smelled PLEASANT after all this time. Quote:

Neville Longbottom; Carsyn already had a feeling that would be the subject matter even if the scarf was trying to mislead them.
Now to decipher what the items had to do with Neville. The plant was pretty easy, as Isla called out upon an easy correlation but Carsyn was almost positive there was something more to the plant. To this specific plant, because otherwise why wouldn't Recard have just selected ANY plant? Rubbing at her temple to try and recall where else she had read about it that was when it hit her. "Specific to the Mimbulus Mimbletonia, which is a rare plant, it was one that Neville had received as a gift in the summer before his fifth year. Ironically it was also made a password to the Gryffindor Common Room that same year which delighted Neville because he could actually remember it." It was the same year she was, so of course she would recall information such as this. Also, remembrall group, hope you're listening to piggyback off this answer. Gabi chuckled a little and nodded. "That is an interesting story indeed. Part of the reason I picked THAT plant is not only because Neville is known to have had one in his possession, but because it was one of the first recorded instances we have of him showing his love of Herbology to others," she added. It was the start of him coming out of his shell, if you will. Quote:

Isla had no idea what kind of pets her parents had when they'd been at Hogwarts. Much less some historical figure from long ago. Speaking of random trivia, Carsyn even knew an old password to the Gryffindor common room from a super long time ago!
Isla really had to read up on random history facts...
So what else was she supposed to say about the plant? Isla flipped through her textbook in search of something else to say. She finally came up with a little something and raised her hand. "It says here that Neville Longbottom taught his friends how to use the plant as a weapon. Apparently, it shoots out Stinksap!" That sounded pretty cool. "It does indeed," Gabi smiled at Isla and then raised an eyebrow. "And since that is an ACTUAL Mimbulus Mimbletonia there, my earlier warning to not touch it still stands," she reminded her - just in case the eager Slytherin forgot. She did NOT want to have to kick her out of her class because she smelled and was causing a distraction... Quote:
Originally Posted by MadMadamMalfoy Heath had a hunch that the lesson was going to be about Neville Longbottom, even before Professor Recard confirmed it. The Hufflepuff scarf threw him off at first, but after hearing some of his classmates' reasoning, it made sense. Given the assortment of other items, he couldn't think of anyone else the lesson could possibly be about! Since his guess had already been said several times, he didn't say anything but listened intently as the class moved on to the mini activity.
So they were supposed to figure out how the object in their group related to Neville Longbottom… which was basically what Heath had already been doing since he saw the scarf. He'd learned from others' answers that Neville married a Hufflepuff and wanted to be one himself - both facts that were news to him - but he didn't want to just piggyback off of someone else's guess. He wasn't Yoda! But what else could he say about the scarf? He thought for several moments until the professor's voice distracted him. He almost smiled at her response to one of the other student's (Bernie) answer, especially the bit at the end about bravery. That sounded just like what his mum told him when he was disappointed about being put in Ravenclaw instead of Gryffindor! Hold on… that just gave him an idea!
He remembered his mum said she herself almost didn't go to Gryffindor; she was a hatstall between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Was it possible that the same thing happened to Neville Longbottom? It would sort of make sense. He raised his hand. "Was Neville Longbottom a hatstall?" he asked, realizing too late just how off topic the question sounded. He quickly added, "I was just thinking… it seems to me that despite being in Gryffindor, Neville had some Hufflepuff-ish qualities too, like loyalty and fair play. Maybe the scarf could represent that side of him, and if he had that side to him, it's possible that the hat took longer than normal to decide on a house…"
The more he talked, the more disjointed his reasoning sounded.* Yeah...he was just going to stop now before he embarrassed himself any more. "Neville's sorting DID take longer than normal, that is true," Gabi confirmed with a nod. "And very good point about him having Hufflepuff qualities! He was definitely loyal to his friends - and his house as well. Many people forget that, and it's a good reminder for everyone that just because you end up in one house, doesn't mean you can't possess qualities from another," she explained. It was a lesson that she herself had taken an embarrassingly long amount of time to figure out. Quote:

Nor did the fact that it seemed like everyone was just going to gloss over that fact. Like, what was wrong with people?
Unless that part of the lesson was coming up...? Gabi paused for a second and looked over at the Ravenclaw. She seemed deep in thought but didn't say anything...hmm. She wondered what Whitney was thinking so hard about?
Once everyone had had a turn, she smiled and turned to the blackboard, reviewing their answers. "Very good everyone! You all pretty much touched on what I was hoping to get at with each item. For the toad - Neville was gifted a toad by his Uncle before heading to Hogwarts. Trevor was a staple of his Hogwarts career, even if he spent most of the time missing," Poor Trevor. At least he'd gotten a chance to get away from everything and rejoin his fellow toads in the Great Lake. "The Mimbulus Mimbletonia, in addition to being one of the plants that Neville was well known for having, represents his love for plants and his future career. The remembrall represents his tendency to be forgetful, which unfortunately got him in to a bit of trouble on numerous occasions. The sorting hat represents Neville's sorting in to Gryffindor - the fact that he questioned it, and the fact that the sword presenting itself to him in his time of need confirmed that he was a true Gryffindor deep down. Finally, the Hufflepuff scarf, which seems to have stumped a lot of you, represented a few things - one, that many people thought he should have gone to Hufflepuff. And two, the fact that he married a Hufflepuff, Hannah Abbot," she explained. She paused and waved her wand so that all those facts - which just about everyone had gotten right - was on the chalkboard for them to copy down. Quote: TOAD:
-Neville's pet toad, Trevor, that he had during school HAT:
-Neville's sorting was questioned by himself and his peers when he first arrived at Hogwarts
-The sorting hat presented Neville with the sword of Gryffindor during the Battle of Hogwarts MIMBULUS MIMBLETONIA:
-Represents his love for plants, and his eventual career as a Herbology professor
-Owned a Mimbulus Mimbletonia during his fifth year and helped students learn to weaponize Stinksap SCARF:
-Possibly could have been sorted in Hufflepuff
-Married Hannah Abbott, a Hufflepuff REMEMBRALL:
-He had a notoriously bad memory in his early years
"Now, we only touched on just a few aspects of Neville's life. There is so much more that we know about him that we HAVEN'T talked about. So, my question to you is simple - tell me something you know about Neville Longbottom. It can be anything! Try not to repeat answers, and once we have a good collection of facts, we'll move on," she informed them all before pausing to wait for the first hand to go up.
She wondered if any of them would touch on the part of his life that this lesson was ACTUALLY about... OOC: Great work everyone! Now on to the Q&A section of the lesson! Question one is as straightforward as it seems - tell me some facts about Neville! Try not to repeat answers, and please don't copy and paste straight from his Wikipedia page. You'll have about 24 hours to get this part done.
