After quickly cleaning his silver knife he got to work with finely chopping his scrunched and bundled up chamomile leaves in the demonstrated rocking motion. When he had got a tablespoon full of leaves chopped, he sprinkled them over the water and set his timer to 5 minutes.
Now it came to the hard part; the dreaded braiding. Cole picked up his three lavender heads and tried to braid. The first attempt failed. It felt like he had too big fingers for this. Trying again with the same result he turned his head to Naya desperation clear in voice. "Naya, how am i supposed to braid without chopping off a flower head? Is there a trick?"
It was time to move on to the next step in the brewing process and Naya added the instructions to her notes. Then she cleaned the additional equipment that she would need for the next few steps. That done, she gathered her chamomile leaves and squeezed them together in her hand. Once they were properly scrunched, she set them down and got her knife. Trying to do exactly as the professor did, she cut the leaves in one direction. Then she did the rocking motion cut in the other direction until the leaves were properly chopped.
Naya got her clean measuring spoons and scooped up the leaves. After making sure she had a tablespoonful, she carefully sprinkled the chopped leaves into her cauldron. She set her timer for five minutes and turned her attention to the next task. Braiding was next. That was no problem, in theory. Naya had been braiding her hair for years. Hopefully braiding plant stalks would be just as simple. She had just picked up her lavender heads when she heard
Cole sounding a little panicked.
Clearly he was having a little difficulty with the braiding part. She could understand this. While some boys knew how to braid, she knew many that could not. Naya turned to her housemate and said,
”It’s not too hard, once you get the hang of it” Grabbing her stalks, she began to demonstrate.
“Just keep your three stalks side by side. You take the one on the outside and cross it over the middle one, like this. Then you take the stalk on the other side and cross it over the middle one. You keep on going until you get almost to the end. The hardest part is knowing how to hold the stalks.” She continued to demonstrate and then said,
“You try it.”
Naya took one of the stalks and tied it around the others, so they would stay together. At that moment, her timer went off. Keeping one eye on Cole she dropped her lavender braid into her cauldron and gave everything two clockwise stirs. Then she turned her complete attention to Cole, to see how he was coming along.
