Flynn has known he was gay since he was a small child, however due to a negative bullying experience he's now firmly in the closet and only his closest friends and family from before the incident are aware of this at the current time. It has not been an issue he has needed to face again due to his age. Likely anyone who has met him since first year would assume he is straight unless directly told otherwise by himself or one of the other Stark School kiddos. This handsome wood is also particularly suited for advanced non-verbal magic and it is this characteristic which often sees a witch or wizard requesting a Willow wand to try out. Not that they're less genuine, but he has intentionally dropped or minimized a lot of overt things he loves pre-Hogwarts that homophobic bullies might target e.g he doesn't wear nail polish anymore even though he used to beg his mum to do colourful designs, he used to mix typically feminine clothes into his wardrobe e.g wearing a tutu or a sundress over his jeans and t-shirt. Flynn knows his interest in dance (particularly ballet) and musical theatre are fundamentally things that might still attract a certain kind of negative attention, but other than that he is careful to cultivate his appearance and mannerisms to be more stereotypically 'boyish' which also means unless your character knew him well as a child or has been told directly by him, they do NOT know this facet of his personality, that he was beat up, or that he is gay, so please don't RP that your character 'can tell'!

Flynn's parents were high school sweethearts and had him very young - he was born only a few months after they graduated. His mum - a model- left his dad- a potioneer- when Flynn was just a toddler. Flynn lived with his grandmother for a while and then with his uncle Gabriel Banner. Then when he was six she met Fintan Darcy while working. They didn't officially become a couple for a few years, but Flynn took to the man immediately because he works with dragons and as a kid Flynn went through a definite phase. Nowadays Flynn and Ruby, and his little brother Zane (who Flynn adores) live together and he visits with his dad every few weeks when he's not at school.
Chosen family
Flynn is also incredibly close with the Stark family. His mum had been a diehard TDK fan (and West Odessa's cousin) and had always tagged along with the band as much as possible. It just so happened that she was pregnant and expecting around the same time as Isidora Miroslava (now Stark), So Flynn and Octavia Stark were born only a few months apart. Their mothers bonded over this and became friends, and Flynn and Tavie became inseparable. Due to TDK's fame, Dora was apprehensive about sending Octavia off to a public school, so she began tutoring her at home, it was only natural for Flynn to be included in this, and eventually the children of other friends, many of them with famous or fame-adjacent parents. Jade Scabior was the oldest, then Tavie and Flynn, and the others their age, Cece, Yoyo, and the James Twins, and lastly the younger girls who are not yet Hogwarts age, Emmerson and Emma. The wider network of Stark School families have always been there for each others children, and to this day the kids are incredibly clise, especially Flynn and the other five who are in his same year.
