”The Headmaster....was anything but amused. He stared blankly as the boy made excuse after excuse and entirely missed the point of what had been said. Piers, he also spared a look but there was some understanding mixed in. Mostly, the man was relieved he hadn’t yet had to give his own son a detention. Kale would cry. Accuse him of not loving him. He would expel him and tell Tally about it only after he was home. It would’ve just been messy.

This, he imagined must’ve felt messy for the Charms Professor, but no worries, he was here to be the firmer one.

“It seems to me that if you’d wanted the luxury of being able to stick around for more food, you wouldn’t have so willingly given away your free time.” In his experience, students often didn’t think far enough ahead to realize that detention revoked their basic privilege of having free time to do as they pleased. “You ate lunch.” He’d seen the boy during the last period. “And could easily have waited til after detention, or at dinner to have more. Detention means you don’t get the choice of doing things on your own terms. The moment you have detention, you are on the terms of the professor conducting your detention.” He would spell it out as this one clearly didn’t get it and he’d rather avoid such aggravation in future.

For his part, his level of maturity had long removed the man’s need to roll his eyes when he heard bouts of absurdity. “It was merely an example of ways an apple can be gotten rid of before arriving at detention. I note you didn’t bother to comment on the part where I said you could’ve thrown it away. Something that was quite within your power but, by all indication, beyond your scope of thinking.” For surely if the boy had thought to simply throw it away, he would have done so. Surely he wouldn’t have intentionally walked in with it just to further frustrate his Headmaster. No. The boy would never. It was clearly an oversight from underuse.

“Out. We’ll do this again. You will get school right. We will practice here, today, in detention.” Malachi set the clock on the wall back by two minutes then looked to the boy again. “Hurry, or you’ll be late for detention and we can’t have that.”
