Catherine genuinely believed that if she stayed at the back as quietly as possible no one would notice her and hence she'd be left alone. There were so many students there, it should be easy.

But she was wrong, because the professor, the Headmaster himself, spoke directly to her, asking if everything was alright. Catherine felt her entire face go nearly as red as her eyes and felt a little lightheaded. Keeping her gaze down and fidgeting with clasping her hands in front of her, she quickly nodded, hoping he would move along and not continue to engage with her and consequently make everyone else stare.

As if on cue, right after the Headmaster had spoken about lateness, the door opened near her and someone walked in. He was much older, and Catherine thought that he was trying to make a point for some reason. She didn't like that one bit, because why would he even do that? What was he trying to prove? And more importantly, what would Headmaster Trent do to this boy?

His answer to the first question made her deadpan once again. Clean up a blown-up first year...? This was... bad. Catherine knew duelling could be very dangerous and it was obvious why unsupervised duels were banned at school. In fact they weren't just banned in schools, certain duels were banned other places too, even to adults. Had they ever heard of the International Ban on Duelling? It was a thing.

All of her classmates were mentioning the reasons that pop into her mind, and she particularly agreed with one older Gryffindor girl that said even friendly duels could get out of hand quickly, especially if done by young student who had poor control over their magic and emotions.

Too much paperwork? Now that had been something Catherine hadn't thought about, but it was probably true. She wondered what the Staff had to do that other term when two students died on Hogwarts grounds - yes, she did know about that even though mum tried to keep the information from them. The perks(?) of having talkative cousins. She bet it had been a lot of work in so many levels. So she strongly agreed with that Hufflepuff too.

...Why was everyone just repeating what others have said? Yes, it had already been mentioned that it could easily get out of hand, no need to keep saying that over and over. Did people get points for just speaking in lessons? Maybe that was why they just kept repeating the same answer. Kind of annoying, really. Though Catherine knew a few people who'd probably have a lot of points then, if all they had to do was talk.

That one Gryffindor who said that 'accidents happen', though. Seriously?? Catherine shot her an incredulous look because... seriously?? No, they didn't 'just happen'. They happened to clumsy, irresponsible people. Duelling accidents shouldn't happen, in fact Catherine had witnessed countless duels in which accidents didn't happen - not irreversible ones, at least, but hexes and jinxes hitting the target shouldn't count as 'accidents' in a duel because that was the sole purpose of them anyway -, and she knew for a fact that it hadn't been a fluke. There was such a thing as professional duellers and championships and people hardly ever died to her knowledge.

The ban was very likely just because they were kids and didn't know what they were doing. Just like adults also shouldn't randomly duel without knowing how to do it properly and safely. Or as safely as a duel could go, which was actually pretty safe, if those involved wanted it do be. Otherwise why would there ever have been be a duelling club at Hogwarts? It could be done properly.
