Honestly, more people should be asking why suspend ya, Bernadette? "I'm Bernadette, by the way, but you can call me Bernie," she added brightly, as though announcing her name might help her carriage companion feel better? Might make him less shocked? Might make him trust her more??? Ah well, she tried.
"I knew it!" Bernie actually grinned this time but quickly ducked her head to hide it. Still smiling, she pretended to be busy digging out more candy from her pockets, including Cockroach Clusters, Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, Drooble's Best Blowing Gum, Peppermint Toads, another Chocolate Frog in its box, Jelly Slugs, Ton-Tongue Toffee, and Sherbet Lemons. Honestly, she needed the transfigured plate for this platter of confections.
It looked like the kid was impressed by this! "See, you should give the ham sammich a shot. Even though you just found out about it, I'm sure you can do magic." She had almost forgotten that she'd completely made up the spell she'd told him. Bernie finished piling her candy onto her plate and then offered the platter to the boy. "Wanna try some? It's ALL delicious." Only the ham sandwich needed a spell. "I'm Elias. Elias Inkwell." He was starting to get used to not shaking hands during introductions, and he found he quite liked it. "What's Hogwarts like, Bernie? I know someone else who's going, but he's a first year too. He said there are houses we get sorted into?"
In all the excitement of getting robes with custom trim!!!, he'd completely forgotten his earlier thought to purchase a book on wizarding society. Bernie seemed like she knew what was what, so he was hoping she'd prove to be a font of knowledge on this, too.
He stared at the heaps of candy in front of him, unable to recognize so much as a single package. With all the adventurousness of a hermit crab, he picked up a pack of Sherbet Lemons and smiled at her, "Thanks! Do you normally have all this candy with you?" |
