Ryder Everett Medina was born in Manchester, England, to pureblood Felix Medina and half-blood Jocelyn Medina (née Edwards). Growing up in a wizarding household, Ryder was constantly exposed to magic. He was homeschooled until he was old enough to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He experienced a rather lonely childhood. Without any siblings or classmates, he spent a lot of his time in quiet contemplation or exploring the woods around his home. His father worked almost constantly as the lead partner at Medina Magical Law, a wizarding law firm in the heart of London. From a young age, Ryder was heavily encouraged by his father to pursue a career in law and join the family business.

When he turned 11, Ryder headed off to Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Gryffindor House. As he was descended from a long lineage of Slytherins, it was quite a shock for the Medina family. (However, it is important to note that Ryder did experience a rather lengthy hat stall.) Ryder had the time of his life at Hogwarts. For the first time, he was finally surrounded by other students. He was particularly skilled at Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Ryder was a relatively average student, preferring to spend his time exploring forbidden areas of the castle with his friends and soaking up the attention from his female classmates instead of studying…until it came time for OWLs and NEWTs. Knowing that he needed to get exceptional scores in order to further his education, he hunkered down and achieved several O and E marks.

Ryder attended Wizarding University Edinburgh, where he followed in his father’s footsteps to study Wizarding Law. Upon graduation, he accepted an internship at the Scottish law firm Blanchard & Whitaker, Wizarding Attorneys at Law. This generated outrage from Felix, who expected his son to immediately seek employment at the family firm. Ryder successfully completed his internship, although he did not wish to seek a full-time position at Blanchard & Whitaker, due to his disagreement with the partners’ corrupt business practices. Reluctantly, he took up a full-time position as a Legal Investigator at his father’s firm in 2097. He worked there for a little over two years, putting up with constant scrutiny and regulation from Felix. The two had a big disagreement regarding his father’s unethical defense of a dark wizard, which eventually led to Ryder’s departure from the firm. In late 2099, he was offered a position as a prosecutor for the Ministry of Magic.
