Simran heard the caterwauling charm go off from her office, and under the assumption that it was just a student having taken a book out without supervision, really wasn't in that much of a hurry. Her office being a little way down the hall, she made her way to the observatory, wand still safely in its hip holster.

In fact, she caught sight of what was possibly Lucas Dakest, heading there to scope the scene.

However, the sight to greet her was something in an entirely different league. The whole area had been desecrated! The books were torn and she could smell something burning, and although she could not hear the creaking of the large telescope over the wail of the charm's sirens, she could almost feel it.

And would you look at that. A student, trying to hightail it out of there. Simran's hand shot out, and with a vicelike grip restrained the boy before he quite managed to flee the scene. "Oh, no you don't. If you even think of going out that door, I will take fifty points from Slytherin for every step you take in that direction." And if he did not care for house points, his housemates certainly would.

Simran wouldn't normally be so quick to get on the offensive, but these resources were priceless -- some of them were the only copies still available, with centuries of insight on the movement of celestial bodies and their effects on magic. Some of them possibly now beyond repair.

For what was quite possibly the first time, Simran Sandhu fully looked her age, and possibly older. All colour drained from her face, and her knees seemed suddenly weak. Any attempts she made towards speech ended only in squeaks. Hand outstretched, she reached for the nearest surface to steady herself against it.

Only, that was not to be, since she ended up resting against the large telescope in the centre of the room.

Finally, a broken croak: "Why would anyone do something like this?"
