At least they were moving on to an activity - Avalon's hand was starting to cramp up from writing so many notes. Professor Beryl sure had a lot of information to impart during today's lesson. She noticed a few students immediately writing down the plants and herbs they had identified by sight alone, and the second year tried not to panic. Avalon wasn't too familiar with magical plants. At least she could use her textbook for help.
The only two she could identify just by looking were lavender and dittany. The narrow purple leaves were a dead giveaway for the former, and a brief sniff confirmed her suspicions. And she had used dittany several times in Potions class. Avalon leaned her nose over a few more plants, inhaling deeply to try and identify them. Okay, so the one with the serrated leaves had to be mint, and the one with the tiny white flowers was definitely chamomile. They smelled too much like her grandmother's favorite teas to be anything else.
She was thankful that she had spent a good bit of time preparing suppers with her mother over the summer, because she was also able to identify two popular cooking herbs, rosemary and thyme. Avalon flipped through her textbook, trying to match any of the descriptions of magical plants to the herbs in front of her. Six down, four to go.
