One late morning in March, while everyone is hard at work in lessons fortunately in the upper floors, the mist finds its way inside the castle. It settles low, having poured in through an open corridor not far from the entrance hall and quickly covers the entire ground floor.

Curiously, it stops just at the bottom of the staircases, not ascending to the first floor but that doesn’t stop it from following all the passageways and making its way lower.

Lower and lower the mist sinks, sweeping through the corridors of the dungeon and filling them entirely. Past the kitchen, beyond the laundry room, beyond the entrances to both the Slytherin and Hufflepuff Common Rooms. It doesn’t leave an inch uncovered. Any classrooms left open are soon filled.

Only sealed entrances manage to repel this strange phenomenon. Up, down, left, right. Who really knows in this fog.

The situation is only helped by the fact the students are thankfully up and away in their lessons.

Even down here the mist continues to travel, almost as if looking for something though not quite so. The actions are just as likely to be opportunistic as they are intentional. These corridors were simply easy to be tumbled into and tumble the mist did.

Thick swirls of cold mist waste no time moving about in chilling silence while the students remain up in their lessons.

It’s perhaps for the best.
