Maybe he didn't need non-verbals after all.
.....who was he kidding, yes he did.
Entering the classroom a bit cautiously, the fourth year took quick notice of the note on the board and dropped his essay off - all 24 inches, precisely. Though his handwriting was rather small. As usual, the Slytherin merely bowed his head in polite acknowledgement before moving to find himself a seat at one of the desks and eyed the holiday directions.
His attention was momentarily drawn by the first of several students to enter the classroom. Rasting. Quiet boy that one. He returned the polite nod, lifting the parchment from the box to get a quick look at it. There wasn't a moment's doubt as to whether the Slytherin had done the homework correctly, just a nervous tick while he tried to ignore the sinking feeling that something terrible was coming.
Looked good to him. The handwriting was smaller than his eyes would appreciate but this was an issue he anticipated with many of his students. It wasn't something he wasn't prepared for.

He turned his bag to his front and pulled out his essay as he entered the classroom. Was it longer than 24 inches? Of course. Was it still a surprise? As he held it at the ready, he looked around. He wasn't going to be the only one who was suspicious about the lack of....unsafety right?
The lights were cool though.
"Hello Headmaster" he greeted with a polite nod and small smile before he dropped his essay in the box. Turning around, he walked over to a desk on the second row and sat down. After he had placed his lesson material neatly on his desk, he pulled out a crossword puzzle book and continued it from the page he had started during breakfast.
"Katharos." This was one of the ones he liked for the simplest of reasons. The boy got his work done, kept his head down and was for the most part dependable. Not a disruption in his lessons by any means and while not the best at the subject, certainly hard working.
Like with Rasting's homework, he fished Katharos's from the box next just to give it a quick look over. Had to make sure it was in order and there was still time before the lesson began.

Digging his essay out of his book bag, Rhett tried to keep an eye on his surroundings, normally he wasn't the one of the first in a class to arrive and it almost made him even more suspicious than normal. Where was everyone else? Where was Cassidy? Regardless, Rhett was ready to get rid of the 24.5 inches of essay he had finally completed. He was d. o. n. e. with it. He approached the front of the room to turn it in, and flashed a hopeful smile up at the Headmaster. Hello, Headmaster, sir.
Where is Cassidy? She's going to be late...and I'm not going to explain what she missed...well, unless there some chocolate frogs involved at least. Rhett thought to himself as he took his seat.
It wasn't more than a second after he'd replaced a parchment of homework into the box that he watched the next First Year to enter the room get onto a near collision course with Katharos. It was good on him to have caught himself--not that it would have caused any sort of serious problem. An inconvenience at most.
"Burke." The Headmaster replied in greeting. The hopeful smile as the boy turned in his homework also didn't go unnoticed.
"Think you've got yourself a real winner with this one?" The homework he meant. If the kid felt even a little confident about turning it in then it meant it was likely to give him less headaches

Briefly skimming the words on the board, the Ravenclaw made his way to the front of the classroom and dropped his homework into the box as instructed. Drewett tried his very best to fit at least two sentences in so his homework would be precisely 24 inches, no more no less. He'd made his handwriting smaller than his usual too, but still readable enough. Hopefully. There was just so much knowledge he wanted to fit in an essay, you see.
After that, he went to his usual seat on the second row of desks. Not too close for it to be panic-inducing if anything suspicious came out of those covered stacks of Merlin knows what. But also not too far for him to not see things in 'high definition'.
"I hope it'll be, Slinkhard, I really do." It was all well and good to
say "good day" but ensuring the day was actually a good one was another thing entirely. To its credit, no new creatures had popped up and there wasn't another Toddles scare so it
could have been a good day but Malachi had already hit "the sky is falling" mode following the man eating spiders incident and it made it just a little harder to think any day was a "good day".

Finding things relatively safe looking the fifth year made her way towards an empty desk pausing briefly when she caught sight of the board. Her essay. Right. She had that. All 24 inches of it written in her clear neat writing as per usual for her. Carefully taking that out of the bag that was hung over her shoulder, Rylee set it into the box on the Headmasters desk. "Good afternoon, Headmaster." She smiled softly at the man before turning to find a seat this time.
Spotting Dorian she gave him a little smile to show she wasn't upset with the incident that had occurred in the duelling arena. Where she choose to sit however was beside Drew. "Hey, Drew." She smiled lightly than turning her attention to taking out her things for the lesson.
Despite everything, the Headmaster found a small, amused smile playing on his lips at the sight of the Gryffindor and her initial apprehension upon entering the classroom. He couldn't say he blamed her-- couldn't blame any of them that came to class in full on caution really. It was nice to know they were taking
something from his lessons, even if the only thing they took was to never drop their guard.
"Prichard." Another responsible one who handed in homework ontime. The man thought nothing of her dropping her parchment in with the others. It would have been strange if she hadn't.

"Afternoon, Spencer." The boy's efforts were not lost on him. The Headmaster remembered the start of term and his apprehension when it came to talking. Spencer was by no means in line to give a speech or host an event but he was now talking and that was a promising start. Promising enough to make an owl home to his parents unnecessary.
Like with a few of the other parchments turned in, Malachi picked up the one the boy dropped in the box. He gave it a once over, checking the basic structure before replacing it in the box. No thorough reading would take place until later on.

She lay the essay down inside the box and returned to her desk. Analiese sat down and unloaded the necessary equipment from her bag. She pulled out her sketchbook from her pocket and thought of something to draw. Her drawings were creatures and beasts normally. There was the odd observational drawing or two.
Then she noticed the covered table. Interesting.
That...was not 24 inches.
Malachi lifted the parchment from the box, choosing to ignore the way the girl entirely ignored him. A simple "good afternoon" would have sufficed. She'd been the only one to give no acknowledgement at all and he may have called her out if he wasn't busy scanning the assignment she'd handed in. Longer than asked for and with smaller handwriting. He....would have a lot of reading ahead of him.
Lovely. One might ask why the man gave homework if he didn't like correcting it after. The answer was too glaringly obvious to warrant any sort of explanation.

Not to mention, the earlier lesson this term on non-verbals had gotten the sixth year's wheels turning. Even if she wasn't a fan of the sports aspect.
Homework? Her face fell for a moment. Did she remember her essay? Did she do her essay? Setting her backpack on a desk near the door, she rummaged through quickly scanning through her parchments in there. There was a homework assignment there - was it the correct one? Who knew? Regardless it was related to Defense and her name was on it, so she dropped it in the box.
Giving an acknowledgement to the Headmaster, she took her seat, and waited
Carrying on the trend of glancing over the parchments that were turned in, Malachi reached next for Walsh's to have a look. He expected to see, more or less, the same types of words and formatting as appeared on the others but when he didn't it caused him to take a proper look.
"Walsh...?" He held the parchment out for her to see.
"What....is this?" SPOILER!!: Dakest

Right. Yeah.
The third year entered the classroom and immediately dumped the essay into the box. No offence, Headmaster, he was just glad it was DONE. Speaking of, he gave the man a small smile before saying, "Hey, Headmaster. I like the festivities." They could scream today, right?
(He was probably still going to scream)
Walking over to a spare seat, he gave the classroom a quick once-over.
A normal-looking room? That was...... weird.
Ah Dakest. Entertaining kid this one. Perhaps, today given the topic at hand, less entertaining but in general the sort to have around......and watch out for in times of actual crisis because the kid seemed the sort to die no matter how much you insisted he refrain from such ill-advised action. Today wasn't the sort of lesson that would warrant any of that and it was something he figured the boy would appreciate so this time he'd forgo any warnings about screaming.
"Glad someone appreciates them. Thought the class could use a bit of Christmas cheer even with the day's topic."
Nothing
terrible. It was all rather passable but everything looked better with fairy lights and thistle.

Avalon took a seat, glancing over at the strange heap in the corner of the classroom. Now what would that be?
"Sinclair." The Headmaster returned evenly. He glanced over at the clock while the young girl made her way to the front to hand in her assignment. It was nearly time for the lesson to begin.
He reached for her parchment. After seeing Walsh's, the man was all the more convinced he would need to be checking them. This one....seemed to be on the right track. How on track was another thing entirely but it was clear that this was at least the assignment that was given.

Another to use the greeting "good day". It almost made him cringe but only almost. On the one hand, he supposed it was good the students were still blissfully unaware and thinking these were good days but on the other, his mind kept trying to figure out what could scare acromantulas out of their home.
"Swann." He replied, taking a glance at her homework too when she dropped it off. Good day. Sure it was. A good day for whatever lurked in the forest to come at them next.
He still maintained that it could have been nothing but...fleeing giant spiders insisted otherwise and his gut was inclined to agree with them.
