Text Cut: Catching up
Tina had to admit she was a little disappointed when Professor O’Hara said they were studying somewhere else today. Oh well, she supposed it wouldn’t be too bad, as long as they weren't’ going anywhere too chaotic. She packed her supplies back into her bag and - wait a second! Did the professor just say they were going to a deathday party? And who was this Edgar Cloggs guy? She’d heard plenty of stories about Hogwarts from her former professor friend/father figure, and not once had that name come up! See, this was exactly the kind of thing she deemed too chaotic! Tina Dantes did not do parties… or really any social situations, for that matter! Too much uncertainty involved…

She stood up and followed the group without complaint, though she was too anxious to pay much attention to what was said along the way. What was the question again? Oh, right… a fact about the Hogwarts ghosts. Tina supposed it was bound to happen eventually, but that didn’t stop the sudden pang of anger that hit her at the mention of Professor Dopple… anger at herself for disliking the woman so much and anger at this school for failing her just as miserably as it had failed her predecessor. Dopple never should’ve been hired, and if the powers that be had realized that, she would probably still be alive! Tina shuddered; she couldn’t imagine a worse fate than being eaten alive and confined to this madhouse for all eternity, except maybe…

Her thoughts turned to the other ghost who Hogwarts had failed in life, the one she had strict orders from her father figure to always be kind to, and she thought of something to add to the conversation. “Moaning Myrtle’s real name was Myrtle Elizabeth Warren, and she helped Harry Potter figure out the location of the Chamber of Secrets by telling him the story of her death,” Tina said. She felt she should offer a nice fact about Myrtle, rather than adding to the discussion of how she died or where she haunted.

Tina made a quick mental note of Professor O’Hara’s warnings as she stepped through the doors. The warming charm she’d placed on herself earlier hadn’t worn off, so the cold didn’t bother her. She stood off to the side, taking it all in… the cobwebs, the ash-covered food, the grating organ music… And then the Hufflepuff prefect’s comments added to the ear assault. Tina had to fight not to roll her eyes. Did that girl just love hearing herself talk or something?

Myrtle’s appearance distracted Tina from her thoughts. She shook her head, but before she could tell Myrtle that she wanted to talk with her, not gawk at her, one of her housemates (Avalon) spoke first. She thought it rude to interrupt their conversation, so she kept quiet for now… which turned out to be a mistake. Oh, goodness! Now Myrtle thought everybody was ignoring her, and another ghost (whom Tina assumed to be Edgar Cloggs) had appeared and greeted everyone. Merlin, there was too much going on at once to process! She could already feel her anxiety mounting. This was why she hated parties! Could she please go back to the common room now? She really was not good at making conversation!

Before Tina could think of a single thing to say to Myrtle, Edgar, or any of the other ghosts, she heard yelling courtesy of that loudmouth Hufflepuff (Archer). Takes a pain in the neck to know one, she thought, but she kept it to herself because unlike some people in the room, she knew when to shut up. Merlin's holey left sock! Did that girl ever think before she spoke? All her shouting would accomplish was making Myrtle even more emotional, thus making it harder to talk to her. Honestly, if she couldn't be considerate of Myrtle, she should've at least been considerate enough of her classmates to not make their assignment harder!

Tina wasn't the slightest bit surprised to hear Myrtle screaming back, but she was surprised by her own reaction. Normally she just kept her head down and didn't engage with people who annoyed her, but for some reason she felt she had to stick up for Myrtle. She didn't know what came over her. Maybe it was the promise she'd made to her friend/father figure, maybe it was her anxiety making her testier than normal, or maybe it was simply because she knew how it felt to be insulted in front of everyone. Whatever the reason, she shot the girl the iciest glare she could muster and said, "Here's an idea, Calrissian: If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Did she know she was probably going to get in trouble for that? In the back of her mind, yes. Did she care? Not at the moment. For now, all of Tina's attention went to placating Myrtle… or trying to anyway. "No, Myrtle, please don't listen to her!" she said, talking louder than normal over the ghost's shriek but not exactly shouting. "You're not a pain in the neck. You're really nice and - and helpful." She was really not good at dealing with emotions, her own or other people's, but she was making an earnest effort here! "I know how you helped Harry Potter find the Chamber of Secrets, and…" Her voice trailed off as she debated whether to say this. She didn't want everybody to know this about her, but she thought it might help Myrtle feel better. "...you helped a friend of mine too. Several years ago."
