He had said the incantation so many times now that it sounded more like a random string of sounds than anything else - though, come to think of it, that was all words were, really. Kaiser supposed that he may as well get on with actually attempting the spell, before the lesson was moved on. Playing catch up was not exactly easy.
Suddenly letting his chair fall back onto all four legs with a loud SLAM, he moved the joystick to the middle of the desk and pointed his wand at it. "Emfanizo Arithmou," he said firmly, moving his wand exactly as he had seen Professor Sissay do so in her demonstration. He had the incantation right, he had the wand movement right, but nothing happened. This, however, neither surprised nor bothered Kaiser. He simply tried again. "Emfanizo Arithmou."
This time, a small wisp of smoke appeared at the end of his wand, but too faint and lacking in substance to really form any clear numbers. Kaiser supposed that his concentration and intent were the problems here; his heart wasn't really in it and his mind was still somewhere up on the castle roof. It was difficult to force this kind of thing. He tried once more.
"Emfanizo Arithmou."
This time, the smoke that appeared started to form the slightly more recognisable shapes of numbers, and Kaiser held his breath so as not to disturb it. He picked up his quill, and quickly noted down what he was fairly certain he could see. There was a 2, definitely, and three... no, four 0s... but the smoke disappeared before he could make out the other two figures, or even double check to make sure he had actually seen what he thought he had seen. Kaiser dropped his quill and took up his wand again, wafting away the smoke with his free hand so that the air was clear for him to try again.
