“What’s an Unbreakable Vow?’’ ten-year-old Rachel asked her mother.
Mae Watson was clattering around in the kitchen, preparing dinner. She glanced over at her daughter as she put the words together to answer the question. She was trying to make it simple and not grisly. “It’s simple, really, sweetie. It’s a very serious promise whereby the two persons involved must keep that promise. There is a dire consequence if it isn’t kept.’’
“What consequence, mommy?’’
Mae set the cutting board down on the kitchen table, put some peeled shallots on them and grabbed a knife. “Let’s just say that one survives while the other won’t.’’
