The department is currently separated into a number of separate rooms that study the various topics. When applying to the department you're experience and qualifications will be analyzed to ensure you are put into the correct room. The Department of Mysteries is a section of the Ministry of Magic that carries out confidential research. Most of its operations are carried out in total secrecy. Few wizards within the Ministry actually know what is located within this department, though it is learned that the various mysteries of the world are studied here including: love, space, thought, time, death, and others. Those wizards who work in the Department of Mysteries are known as Unspeakables because of the confidential nature of their work.
In the British Ministry of Magic, the areas that fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Mysteries are:- the Chamber of Codes
- the Death Chamber
- the Hall of Prophecy
- the Love Chamber
- the Space Chamber
- the Thought Chamber
- the Time Chamber
Each of these areas offers many opportunities for advancement, though specialist knowledge and training is required in some roles. The wizarding world is rich with the potential of new discoveries and innovations, and the Department of Mysteries is a prime place to unravel them all. ADMINISTRATION
The Administration staff of the Department of Mysteries includes the Department Head, Chroniclers, liaisons, and any division heads assigned to this level. Text Cut: Administration available positions Chronicler
A Department of Mysteries Chronicler is tasked with the storage and maintenance of the archives for the department. They responsible for assembling, cataloguing, preserving and managing valuable collections of historical information, items, and artifacts of varying magical natures. These Unspeakables will receive and handle all packages, items, and documents that enter the department first and often times under the supervision of the Department Head. Moreover, they must ensure records are available to all Unspeakables who need to examine the materials for reference. While part of the administrative team for the Department of Mysteries, Chroniclers work stations are located in Chamber of Codes. Because Chroniclers provide a narrative behind the artifacts, they must to have strong research proficiency and effective written and oral communication skills. Chroniclers must be adept in spellwork. An O grade in NEWT level Charms and History of Magic, and an E grade in NEWT level Defense Against the Dark Arts. They must also have at least 4 other NEWT level subjects. Ancient Runes is recommended.
CHAMBER OF CODES
Unspeakables assigned here manage all manner of devices and contraptions used for decoding recent or ancient items writing in difficult to decipher codes or languages. They study ancient and dead languages to determine facts about our origins and the origins of magic and incantation. Text Cut: Chamber of Codes available positions Cryptographers
Cryptographers are tasked with the study of ancient and dead languages to determine facts about our origins as well as the translation of artifacts and other ancient materials. Knowledge in different scripts (logographic, syllabaries, pictographic, and so forth) is expected. Cryptographers cross-compare ancient materials to learn new languages and analyze encrypted texts and attempt to determine the meaning from them. These Unspeakables are responsible for the expansion of communications systems (including spoken and written language) in Wizarding World, including the search for previously unknown language. They may also be called upon to encrypt spellwork and artifacts at the discretion of the Department Head or other superior power. A minimum O grade in NEWT level Ancient Runes and Arithmancy, as well an E grade in NEWT level History of Magic is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. Defense Against the Dark Arts is recommended. Experience in cursebreaking and fluency in at least three languages is beneficial. Minor Cryptographers
Minor Crypotographers assist Cryptographers with the study of ancient and dead languages, translation of artifacts, and working with encrypted texts and is an entry level position. Cryptographers may also be asked to assist Chroniclers with the assembling, cataloguing, preserving and managing valuable collections of historical information, items, and artifacts of varying magical natures, as well as general upkeep and cleanliness of the Chamber. A minimum E grade in NEWT level Ancient Runes, as well an E grade in NEWT level Arithmancy and History of Magic is required. They must also have at least 2 other NEWT level subjects. Fluency in more than one language is beneficial.
DEATH CHAMBER
Unspeakables that work within this chamber undertake the study of death and explore the unchanneled magic that relies on it as an organising principle. Text Cut: Death Chamber available positions Alchemists
Alchemists are tasked with the research, study, and creation of live giving materials. They may be asked to leave the Ministry to investigate claims of eternal youth and/or life. These Unspeakables study the plane between life and death and work closely with the Veil. Positing theorems on possible means of life extension via elixirs or otherwise is also commonplace. Alchemists may work closely with magical creatures associated with death, including but not exclusive to phoenixes, threstrals, dementors, and inferi. Horcruxes and the soul are also carefully examined as well as research into a method of reuniting a fractured soul. A minimum O grade in NEWT level Potions, as well an E grade in NEWT level Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. Ancient Runes and Care of Magical Creatures are recommended. A degree in Alchemy is required. A background in Dark Arts and Chemistry is encouraged. Mortemists
Mortemists are tasks specifically with studying death and the after life. These Unspeakables work closely with the Veil and may be asked to leave the Ministry to investigate near death experiences. Mortemists may work closely with magical creatures associated with death, including but not exclusive to, dementors, threstrals, and inferi. Interviewing and working alongside ghosts and poltergeists is common. Intensive research on the Killing Curse and other nonblockable spells, the nature of and relation of magic to the human body, are also performed in this position. They must be adept in spellwork. Horcruxes and the soul are also carefully examined as well as research into a method of reuniting a fractured soul. A minimum O grade in NEWT level Defense Against the Dark Arts, as well an E grade in NEWT level Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. Potions is recommended. HALL OF PROPHECY
Unspeakables assigned here are tasked with the storage, safeguarding, and collecting of prophecies and their interpretations. They also check and test the validity of potential and established Seers and maintain communications with all Seers. LOVE CHAMBER
Also known as the Ever-Locked Room, Unspeakables that work within this chamber undertake the study of human emotion (particularly love) and its associations with magic. Text Cut: Love Chamber available positions Potioneers 1
Potioneers are tasked with studying the effects of love (human emotions on a broader scale) in relation to potions brewing. The seven types of love (Eros, Ludus, Pragma, Agape, Philia, Storge, and Philautia) are carefully examined in association with love potions and their ability to manipulate and emulate the emotion. These Unspeakables are responsible for the safe and structured expansion of emotional emulation and manipulation brews known to the Wizarding World. Dark potions such as the taboo Rebirth Potion as also examined and may be called upon to work alongside the Death Chamber's Alchemists. A minimum O grade in NEWT level Potions and Herbology is required, as well an E grade in NEWT level Charms is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. A degree in Alchemy and training in magitoxicology is beneficial. Charmists
Charmists are tasked with studying the effects of love (human emotions on a broader scale) on magical law. The seven types of love (Eros, Ludus, Pragma, Agape, Philia, Storge, and Philautia) are carefully examined in association with their influence on casting as well as magic's ability to manipulate and emulate it. Experimentation to deepen the Wizarding World's understanding of the line separating charms and Dark charms is observed, as well as research into love as protective magic. Charmists are responsible for the safe and structured expansion of Entrancing Enchantments known to the Wizarding World and may be required to work alongside Charms Developers in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes and present in front of the Experimental Charms Committee pending approval from the Department Head. Unforgiveable Curses and the Patronus Charm are also carefully examined. A minimum O grade in NEWT level Charms, as well an E grade in NEWT level Ancient Runes is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. Transfiguration is recommended. A degree in Experimental Magic & Research is a must.
SPACE CHAMBER

Chronologists are tasked with the research and development of the magical means of time travel and calculate its effects. They restore time variables impacted from unauthorized or skewed time tampering when rifts in the timespace continuum are detected as well as research the probabilities of other realities and universes. Chronologists much be proficient in spellwork. These Unspeakables are responsible for the safe and structured expansion of time manipulation related magic and items known to the Wizarding World. They may be asked to work alongside members of the Department of Transportation in assisting with maintaining and improving apparition, portkey, and floo procedures and related magic. Chronologists maintain and repair all timeturners and create the sand contained within. They must be familiar with the Arrow of Time, the Novikov Principle, and Professor Croaker's Law. Study of the life cycles of all living things, including the paradoxes presented by Dark creatures, and must be able to handle various creatures and plants. A minimum O grade in NEWT level Charms, as well an E grade in NEWT level Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. Transfiguration is recommended. A degree in Experimental Magic & Research is a encouraged. Experience with Metallurgy/Metal Charming is beneficial. Minor Chronologist
Minor Chronologists serve as assistants to Chronologists and is an entry level position. They are tasked with the research and development of the magical means of time travel and calculate its effects.They may be asked to work alongside members of the Department of Transportation in assisting with maintaining and improving apparition, portkey, and floo procedures and related magic. Minor Chronologists maintain and repair all clocks inside the Time Chamber, assist with the creation of timeturner sand, and overall upkeep of the entire room. A minimum E grade in NEWT level Charms, as well an A grade in NEWT level Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures is required. They must also have at least 3 other NEWT level subjects. Transfiguration is recommended. Experience Metallurgy/Metal Charming is beneficial.
