It seemed like most of the students were completing the task without too much difficulty and so Professor Sabra just observed, watching the drawings and tracings take place. But of course there were questions.

BUT STILL. The validation was nice and brought a chipper sort of smile to his otherwise melancholy features. Well, until his brow knit in confusion at the mention of hieroglyphics being a language and therefore...the Elder Futhark also being one?

"Professor...is it a language if, you know, it's only written? Not just that but also, you know, a representation of all these things." He paused a moment to collect his thoughts. "'Cause...these alphabets, er, scripts? They are more a representation of language, right? Why we can still use it today in English but they used it all the way back then in their own spoken language?" Hold on, he still wasn't entirely done rambling here...and these were the seeds of a budding magical linguist in the making here. "...what's the difference exactly between a language and a script?"

He was still only at the TIP of the iceberg with inquiries, but he also needed to try and sort out his own name here...and he was going to go with the short version of it to begin. Hey, if he went by the nickname Bel gave him he was done with just one hieroglyph too. But just Derf for now...he could do the rest of his name later

He was...pretty stoked about having a VIPER in his name, you know?
Interesting question too that the Hufflepuff Prefect brought up. "Languages don't have to be ones that are spoken. Something interesting too about this one is that most Ancient Egyptians couldn't read or write, so the fact that they were able to develop a language to communicate, which is essentially what makes it a language is that it was used to communicate, is rather brilliant." Did that help any in clarity? Maybe? "I suppose it's similar as to why a language such as Latin isn't really used today in common dialect, because of its practicalities." Interesting and fascinating to learn about, but not practical in the least.

The hieroglyphs shouldn't be considered a language, just like you wouldn't call the alphabet a language either. He was curious what the professor had to say to that. Maybe it was different with hieroglyphs.

In the meantime however, Cam started to write - or rather draw - his name. Liam was the one who could draw well out of the two of them so his first three hieroglyphs weren't exactly a work of art. Also, why did he have to have TWO birds in his name already? Those were particularly hard to draw.

After finishing his owl he looked back over at his textbook....and paused. Hm. Should he use the one for "egg"? "Excuse me, Professor?" He raised his hand, waiting until he'd been called upon to continue with his question. "What hieroglyph should I use for the "e" in Cameron?" Because that didn't sound like "egg", did it? Cameron. No. That just made it sound more like what Amaia called him.

And why did his name have to have TWO of them???? Laaame.

"You should use the long E," Max butted in on Cam's question to the professor, brow furrowed in concentration as he got to work tracing the birds for the M and the A of his own name. "We can all just start calling you CamEEEEEron instead."

Finished with his birds, Max stopped and scanned the list of letters again. Apparently, the letter X wasn't worthy of it's own symbol and instead was a combo of the K and the S. Not only did that seem very unfair, but it meant extra tracing. And it was stupid because his name wasn't MAKS.

Finished with his tracing, Max leaned back and studied his work. Nope, something wasn't quite right...... it needed some finishing touches. He leaned back over his parchment and gave his first bird a moustache and his second bird a sick mohican. There. Much better.

"What do you reckon?" He asked, waving his parchment at CamEEEEEron and Sylvie with a grin.

SPOILER!!: MAX
Hmm....... And there was a question over what letter to use to represent the E. Katrina did smile slightly at Maxton's remark over the long E but yes, it didn't really make sense to use it as she considered pronunciation in her head.

"Good question ... and yes, I think the E in Cameron is ... well, it sounds almost like a soft I, so I would go with the hieroglyphic that represents the short 'I'."

Time to address the whole class now with another question. "So sometimes we get symbols that represent the overall concept rather than translation of letters to symbols. They are similar sounding words but have completely different meanings. These symbols are called determinatives. In similar fashion, there are words that are made plural. Anyone know how the ancient Egyptians would make a word plural?"

ooc: A few hours left for the mini activity before we'll move on, though catchup posts are always welcome <3
