Gaston was not at all surprised when once again, Daisy’s hand was the first he saw in the air. What did surprise him, however, was the shake of her head. He shot her a quick apologetic look as a fresh pang of guilt gripped his heart. If only he’d been faster that night… maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad reminder for her! He blinked, trying to force the sudden onslaught of emotion down. “Yes! Excellent, Miss Swann,” he replied with an approving nod.

It didn't feel like long until it was time to move on, and Hanna turned her attention from the dummy to Professor Marchand. It was time for a more difficult spell. Sectumseptra was such a nasty spell. Even hearing the spell sent a cold tingle down her spine. Thank Merlin he wasn't actually casting it. But to learn the counter spell for it was very valuable too. "Vulnera Sanentur," she whispered to herself, just to say it out loud for the first time. She wrote the information down on her parchment, before having a think of the effects of the spell. Hanna thought about the mass effect of healing a very deep gash, and raised her hand. "It... it closes the wounds?"

Gaston returned Hannah’s grin with a small smile of his own. No matter what else was going on with him, it always lifted his spirits to know he’d made a student smile… and smiles were becoming rarer each day under Scrimgeour’s soul=crushing regime. It was only a matter of time before he turned everyone into heartless robots like himself! With a quiet sigh, Gaston refocused his thoughts, just in time to see Hannah’s hand go up. He called on her, nodding in reply to her answer. “Very good, Miss Newton!” he said.

Alfred was looking so much better. Jackson had to admit to himself that he would have been disappointed if he hadn’t managed to keep up with the class’ progression, but luckily he was doing alright. It was time learn more about the more complicated spell, and Jackson relocated the three gashes that Alfred had. The sight of blood didn’t make him queasy or anything, but the gash itself… the layers of flesh and whatever else visible… Yea, that made him hesitate a little bit.

When the question was posed, Jackson raised his hand. “Sir, I believe it slows down blood loss, right? I don’t think it can reverse the issue though, right?” That would be beneficial but that seemed extreme even for magic. That would be cool if he was proven wrong though.

It was good to know the counter curse, though it almost seemed like it was a topic for defense against the dark arts. Maybe this was a "charms to fix you after the dark arts" lesson.

The counter curse, Vulnera Sanentur. Natalie had obviously never had the need to use it before, but she did know a bit about it. Well, at least she thought she knew. She raised her hand. "Sir, I think it returns the blood back to the body. Doesn't it?" Maybe? Like, it healed the wound, but didn't it put the blood back first so that they person didn't die of blood loss?

Well, this was interesting! It seemed that Jackson and Natalie had opposite thoughts on whether or not Vulnera Sanentur replenished lost blood. He gave each of them a nod in response to their answers, though he decided to address both of them at once so as not to go back over the same information. “That’s correct, Mr. Thomas,” he said. “While Vulnera Sanentur slows blood flow, it cannot replace the lost blood.”

He turned to Natalie with an encouraging smile. “Still, I’m glad you brought this up, Miss McKinley,” he said. “Although the spell itself doesn’t reverse the blood loss, there’s another way to do it. After using Vulnera Sanentur, the patient should be given a blood replenishing potion.”

Then it was over with. She still hasn't finished healing her dummy, but...eh. She tried at least right?

Questions....more questions...she did not no the answer but...she raised her hand.
Hopefully the question wasn't too obvious.
"Professor, didn't Severus Snape invent the spell that the counter curse was used for as well?"

Gaston kept an eye on Skyler for the rest of the activity, just in case she started to feel sick again. The sigh caught him a bit off guard. He never gave punishments lightly, only when there was absolutely no way around it. Didn’t she know that? As his eyes scanned the room for hands in the air, he saw Skyler’s and called on her. She hadn’t exactly provided an answer to the question he asked, but still she raised a good point. He nodded, both in approval and reply to her question. “Yes, Miss Queen,” he said. “Severus Snape invented both spells when he was still a student here at Hogwarts.”

Raising her hand she bit her lip. " Prfoessor doesn't it clear residue and begin to heal the wound?" she asked not sure. She thought she read that somewhere in her books, although she could be wrong. She had to answer right? If she didn't she'll get into trouble and she didn't want that

So far, the students had named two effects of Vulnera Sanentur, but Gaston was still waiting to hear the third. He saw Stella’s hand go up, and… finally somebody said it! He made sure to give her an extra encouraging beam, especially when he noticed the lip biting. Unlike some of his colleagues, he wouldn’t berate a student for not having an answer, but he was especially glad that she did. “Yes, it most certainly does! Very good, Miss Starson,” he said.

When she had finished she waited for the lesson to continue. Listening to the professor talk. Vulnera Sanentur. She knew the answer, but many had already said the three effects. So Juni just kept her eyes on the front of the room. While the others answered. No sense in repeating one of three answers.

Gaston beamed, nodding in reply to Juni’s thanks. “No thanks necessary, Miss Primeaux,” he said. “You certainly have a talent for healing.” Quite a few of the students did, he’d noticed. He was a little surprised when the Ravenclaw captain didn’t offer an answer to the question, but he reasoned it was because the correct answers had already been said. He gave her a quick look of acknowledgement before moving on.

It was triggering in a 'this isn't really allowed but I'm going to do it anyway' kind of way. But, then again, others had received much MORE special treatment in their own academic pursuits. He wasn't asking for an entire lab to practice necromancy, for example. "Really...that would be okay?!" he asked, his tone high pitch and nervous but very very excited.

Administering a few more necessary charms to his and Chloe's dummy, Derf glanced up as the professor moved things along just a little toooooooooooooooo ... Vulnera Sanentur. Another spell Derf was quite familiar with, the healer had performed it several times on him at the end of last term, and the three parts easily came to mind: that is slowed blood flow, cleaned the wound of residue, and knitted it. Though he did not lift his hand to answer as several of his classmates had already touched upon all of these. Though he was tempted to point out to Skyler that the answer to her question was written quite clearly on the board.

Instead, as he tended to do when he had nothing to contribute to the answer, he asked a question. "Professor? In terms of...the relation to blood flow of a wound...what is the relation of Vulnera Sanentur to say...Tergeo?" Which was also classified as a healing spell.

Seeing Derf’s eyes light up at the offer of a creature dummy made Gaston smile more than anything that had happened in class so far today. A dummy was different from a toy, so there was no rule saying Derf couldn’t have one… at least not yet, though he wouldn’t put it past Scrimgeour to come up with one. He’d offered in (sort of) secret so the other students wouldn’t overhear and get jealous. He nodded. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, since it’s for educational uses,” he whispered. “Come to my office later, and bring your bag with you.”

As the class moved on to the next question, he saw Derf’s hand go up… and the prefect answered his question with another question. It looked like he’d be used to that after teaching this boy for nearly six years. Gaston considered the question for a moment. His mind was formulating an answer, but first, he wanted to double-check that it was the answer Derf was looking for. “Could you elaborate please, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne?” he said. “Were you referring to the similarities and differences of the spells? Or if one is better to use for blood than the other? Or something else?”

When the answers stopped coming, Gaston addressed the class once more, “Excellent job, everybody! You’ve correctly named all the effects of Vulnera Sanentur…” He waved his wand, and the following words appeared under the information already on the board:

Quote:
Vulnera Sanentur - heals large wounds

Invented by Severus Snape
Only countercurse to Sectumsempra

Effects:
Slows blood flow (does not replace lost blood - use blood replenishing potion)
Cleans residue
Closes wounds
He gave the students a few moments to process the information before continuing, “Because the effects are threefold, you must say the spell three times for maximum effect. If you’re doing it right, it should sound almost like a song. To cast, you may either trace the wounds with your wand or poke them - though I don’t advise doing the latter!”

Gaston moved to the nearest dummy, wand drawn. He traced his wand over a deep gash in the dummy’s chest and repeated, “Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur…” Gradually, the “blood” vanished, and the wound closed itself. Resuming his place at the front of the room, he went on, “Please note that in a real life situation, you must give the patient dittany immediately after casting the spell to avoid scarring.” His expression darkened as his mind wandered back to the night of the Inferi attack for what seemed like the hundredth time this class… how he’d healed his own injuries but insisted Penelope give her supplies of dittany to the injured students. Merlin, he hoped the students would have enough common sense not to ask him if that’s why he still had scars across half his face.

He sighed, shaking his head to kill the memories, before looking out at the students. “You have the rest of class time to practice using Vulnera Sanentur on your dummies. Keep in mind that this is a very difficult spell to master, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t get it right on the first few tries; the important thing is that you keep trying!”

OOC: We've reached the mini activity! As Gaston said, all you have to do is practice Vulnera Sanentur on the dummies. You can work alone or in groups, but everybody must attempt the spell to get full credit. If you need help or have questions, please indicate in the title of your post. Gaston and I will be checking back in periodically to answer. You have UNTIL 2:30 AM EDT Oct. 14 to do the mini activity.
