Then the door eased open. If she were the kind of person who slouched (and she most certainly was not), this moment would have seen her straightening. Yet her back was always like a ruler and this was impossible. "Professor Rafferty Ainsworth," she full named him as she had done to virtually all of her colleagues at the feast. It did not bother her one bit if people returned the greeting in the same way or not. She held out her hand to shake his. This was the first time they met face to face, after all.
Now what was the purpose of her visit? It was of course to get a feel of who this newest colleague of hers was, and how she should act in his presence. Alice liked knowing exactly where everyone stood when it came to issues that may or may not derail her career.
Smiling professionally and dipping her head slightly as a sign of respect, the History of Magic professor walked into the man's office and allowed her eyes to dart from one corner to the next - never actually moving her neck at all while doing this. Like her, he did not seem to have many items in his office, though even her office was not as bare as this one. "Lovely office you have here," she said, crossing her hands in front of her and turning around in a circle to make an exaggerated show of surveying what she had already seen upon stepping into the office. She had given the same compliment to Professor Stewart and would have made the same comment about almost any office that wasn't a mess. In all honesty, she liked Kay's office better. "I'm afraid I can't stay long, as I am sure you are busy and I, too, have obligations that I must attend shortly. I just felt it right that I welcome you to Hogwarts. You're the only colleague I haven't had the pleasure of being introduced to." Julian must have been busy. Then again, he didn't seem like the type to waste time on pleasantries.
She smiled professionally again at the Muggle Studies professor. "I am also new to staff. Regina hired me, but I barely knew her and of course she was gone so quickly. But I am a quick learner and I quickly adapted." Why was she saying this? To demonstrate that she had no problem working with Julian despite he not being the one who hired her. "So if you need assistance or have questions, I would be more than happy to help a fellow newbie."
Yes, she used the word newbie. Was Rafferty wondering why he was being named in full? Yes. Was he finding it weird? Also yes. “That would be me,’’ Rafferty confirmed in a bored voice. Why was this Professor here? She had better not be wasting his time. The cold eyes belonging to him looked down at the outstretched hand for a full thirty seconds before reaching out to extend his own. Raftery shook the hand once then dropped it. A people person he was not.
The silence continued even when the office was complimented and when she continued talking. Rafferty’s eyebrows finally quirked up with interest when she mentioned that she was also new on staff. “I see.’’ Shrewd and calculating expressions crossed his face. It seemed as though she was eager to get on their good sides. This was just perfect. The more cooperation Scrimgeour had the better. Rafferty tossed a questioning look. "Wouldn't that be like the blind leading the blind?’’ He had absolutely no use for her help.
