Gaston stood up front with his hands resting atop his cane, his right hand over the left to cover his wedding ring. He had given up a lot of things he loved for Scrimgeour's stupid rules, but this was too much. He shouldn't have to hide just because the old man was too hard-hearted to win the love of a woman (or man, if Scrimgeour swung that way)!
He glanced toward the door, watching for both arriving students and unwanted intruders. It was no surprise that Daisy was first to arrive, but what did surprise him was the lack of a greeting. Not that he could blame her, of course. He'd heard all about Scrimgeour's nasty habit of punishing students for politeness. Well, that was not happening in his classroom! "Good morning, Miss Swann," he greeted. Quote:

And he didn't want to be on anyone's bad side today. Oooh, dummies! Tad really wanted to touch them but the board said not to. He was glad that the room was nice and toasty so he didn't have to ask someone for a heating charm. So he went to one of the closest tables to stand behind until it was time for class to start. Not long after, Tad arrived, and Gaston couldn't resist returning the boy's smile with a small one of his own. Even in his darkened emotional state, seeing a child smile never failed to melt his heart! "Hello, Mr. Potter," he replied, being careful not to use his ring hand to return his wave. For a moment, he thought Tad was going to touch the dummies, despite the instructions on the board, but he was glad that didn't happen. Quote:

Maybe at some point it would be less points lost for skipping than for his uniform being like this.
He walked in and well not too many people yet, so guess he was early.
Weird, but it works "Hey, Professor"
He was just going to stand behind a desk now and lean his legs on it. Do not touch the dummies. So does that mean he is not suppose to touch anyone in class or just the the literally dummies. Questions that didnt have an answer. He was thankful it was at least warm in the classroom. Gaston's blue eyes followed Theo as he entered the room, taking note of the lose tie and unironed, untucked shirt. He inwardly cursed. So much for getting through this class without docking points from anyone! "Hello, Mr. Montmorency," he greeted; then his expression darkened slightly as he crossed the room to where the boy stood. "That uniform looks a mess!" he said, trying to keep his voice low so as not to attract unnecessary attention. " I'm afraid that's five points from Gyrffindor." There was an almost apologetic look in his eye. He hated having to be the bad guy and take points, but he had to abide by the rules as much as possible. " Please tuck in your shirt, and make sure tt's ironed in the future." Quote:

If Marchard got fired, Nettie would just LOSE it.
Not saying a word to him as she entered - as per those stupid rules - she took her place and waited patiently for class to start. Gaston had only just resumed his place at the front of the room when Nettie appeared. His eyes followed her as she silently took her place behind a desk. DId the silence surprise him? Not at all. Did it sadden him? Absolutely. He gave her a small, halfhearted smile as he greeted her, "Good morning, Miss Gladin." Quote:

Exams, general (as in not including all the new rules) prefecting, the Animagus training she’d still managed to keep going even if it meant having to run SORE in the mornings on little sleep. Visiting the barns and Professor Wayland. Her secret notebook had only gotten fatter over the days, waiting for the time she could smuggle it out over the holidays to get to Professor Hirsch. Someone needed to know the truth.
She had been surreptitiously keeping an eye on Professor Marchand over the past weeks too, so his appearance as the tall blonde prefect had walked into the Charms classroom hadn’t really surprised her. At least, she’d kept the frown inside, just in her thoughts, as she’d walked to her usual seat and given him the brightest smile she could manage as she stood quietly behind it. Given all the conflict in her head these days, it was getting harder to stay her usual self.
Maybe they were learning healing charms today? Gaston was pleased to see the Gryffindor girl prefect on time for the lesson... not that he doubted she would be, of course. Her smile brightened his mood, if only for a moment. He managed to smile back, though his smile was much less bright than Staysa's had been. "Good morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova," he greeted. Quote:

He was really wishing his parents had let him stay with his grandparents.
Taking stock of which desks were open he walked over to one and stood behind it praying he didn’t loose more points since you know apparently having manners was grounds for point deductions. Nodding at Professor Marchand he stood waiting patiently so he could try and enjoy a class. Patrick was the next to arrive, and as Gaston expected, took his place without speaking. Well, at least he got a nod of acknowledgement; that was better than nothing, but still this rule was so stupid! He nodded in return, his eyes following the SLytherin captain as he went. "Good morning, Mr. Dooley," he greeted. Quote:

Everything looked really serious and miserable and he didn't like it.
...... was it too late to turn around and walk out of the class?
He didn't really know how long he was standing there but it was a while before he took a few more steps into the class...... and then a few more and a few more...... until he was standing near an empty seat on the emptiest row he could find. As much as he didn't want to be anywhere near these dummies, he couldn't help but lean forward slightly to try and get a better look at the cuts and things on it. They looked very real, didn't they? Huh. He.... half-wondered if they were going to be doing some more bandaging in this class. He did need some practice with the bandage skills.
And nothing was said to the Professor. Because rules, of course. But he did notice that the man looked a lot sadder than usual. Gaston's bright blue eyes widened with concern as he saw Lucas just standing near the door. Was something wrong? Was he araid of the dummies? "Hello, Mr. Dakest," he said, giving the boy a small encouraging smile. "Is everything okay?" The thought crossed his mind to tell him to move - lest Scrimgeour or one of his cronies pass by and punish him for moving too slowly or blocking in the way or some such nonsense - but luckily he started moving on his own. He frowned at first before smiled when he realized that Professor Marchand was playing by the rules as best as he could.
Smart man.
He was very proud of his Head of House. Chase nodded his head at the Professor and offered a small smile. Chase also got a lok of concern as Gaston noticed his frown. If Scrimgeour's unreasonable expectations were crushing the boy's soul even half as much as they were his own, he could understand why! Or maybe he was just disappointed by the lack of refreshments... The dark-haired Frenchman shot the boy a quick apologetic look. Sorry, Chase! It went against everything he stood for to do away with the refreshments, but he couldn't risk it, not after what happened to Kalen! Luckily, the frown was soon replaced with a smile, which was returned, along with the nod. "Good morning, Mr. Splenley," he said. Quote:

"Good day, Professor. I hope you're going somewhere pleasant for the winter holiday." She finally started moving again, much to the joy of anyone stuck behind her in the doorway. Chloe chose a seat in the middle of the room, somewhere easy to observe without being too extremely overt. Here was another student standing frozen in the doorway! Gaston was starting to get a little worried. Were the dummies really that shocking? He was suddenly jerked out of his thoughts by the sound of Chloe's voice, and he looked at her with a slight smile, a smile that grew as she spoke. The thought crossed his mind to award house points for striking up a conversation, but he knew Scrimgeour would likely interpret it as an act of defiance. He was already walking around with a target on his back; better not chance it! "Good day, Miss Kettleburn," he replied, smiling as his thoughts turned to the holidays. "I am; thank your for your concern. i'm going back home to France for the holidays. Do you have any special plans?" Quote:

Or some of them. Some of them you couldn’t even do that with some. Anyway she give the professor an encouraging smile. He seemed even sadder than normal.
Juniper noticed the dummies and stopped to see what was up with them. She didn’t touch per the notice. She was immediately excited to see the dummies with cuts and maybe even broken bones from the look of them. This term was really feeding her ideas of becoming a healer. At least now she had something to look forward to in the lesson. Not that she wasn’t excited about a charms lesson either way. She went to her seat and stood behind it until it was time for the lesson to begin. Gaston beamed at Juniper as she greeted him. It was nice to see that at least some students hadn't yet been scared into silence. "Hello, Miss Primeaux," he greeted, returning her smile for a brief moment Quote:

He was, unfortunately, expecting an announcement that Christmas was cancelled any second now. That would sound about right considering it was the only thing that kept him going these days. "Professor." he probably said out loud as he entered the classroom. Who could really tell these days? There was just... emptiness all around.
He then walked to an empty seat. He heaved his bag into the seat and began digging through it. Since they weren't allowed to sit yet, he might as well get set up for the lesson. He pulled out a water bottle, blue muggle pen, and regular pocket mirror and set it on the side of his desk. All items not contraband that he'd been carrying around in his bag just because he could.
He then glanced in Juni's direction. Was this considered too public? Which reminded him that he should mention to her that he had a ribbon in his bag that they could both hold an end of. No rule breaking there. The Ravenclaw would be proud of him.
He also had a mirror and was willing to learn morse code.
Because, apparently, certain people thought things like that would be less disruptive than handholding. (Which, coincidentally, had way more health benefits than annoyances.) Blue eyes blinked in surprise as Slate appeared and offered a greeting. Wow, three verbal greetings in a row! That was unexpected... not that Gaston was complaining, of course. He enjoyed talking with his students. He sighed, trying to distract himself from his rising anger. These kids shouldn't have to be afraid to say hello... but there was nothing he could do about that now. "Hello, Mr. Ryker," he replied, his eyes following the boy to his desk.
Then he saw... oh, good Godric Gryffindor! That wasn't what he thought it was, was it? He was at the boy's side in an instant. " That's not a two-way mirror, is it?" he asked, scrutinizing the item in question. It didn't appear to be... good! Still, he couldn't take chances! His voice dropped as he added, "Please put that back in your bag. Some people might get the wrong idea..." And by that, he meant he half-expected Scrimgeour to barge in at any moment and jump to the worst possible conclusion. Quote:

Of course this term the Hufflepuff could venture more of a guess as to why...but it was almost like the man enjoyed being unhappy with how things kept going on, you know? Unlike others, and even with the way guilt shriveled up his moderately fragile heart, he was relieved not to see any food or drink in the classroom and quickly made his way over to a seat towards the middle of the classroom...
...to stand beside Chloe. "Hey," he whispered as he set his bag down and stood dutifully behind his chair. This rule....wasn't so bad. Standing until instructed to sit and all. The standing provided a better vantage point to take in the classroom too and the....various levels of carnage that the dummies were in.
So...this was going to be the next level of RICE then? Was there another grain for healing charms? CORN, perhaps? With the C being for Charms?
Derf merely offered the deputy headmaster and small smile. Had to be hard on him since, well, he was technically the right hand man in terms of titles...but clearly wasn't in Headmaster Scrimgeour's eyes. That title officially fell upon Professor Fletcher...which, well, did that make Professor Marchand even more disposable? Could someone be fired for being...too joyless? Derf had, well, sorta hoped that the man would have acted more like a Patronus Charm against the dementor dictatorship overtaking the castle...but alas. Ah, here was the other Hufflepuff prefect! Gaston half-expected Derf to offer him a chocolate frog, like he normally did when he was sad, but he breathed a silent sigh of relief when that didn't happen. He would hate to dock points from someone trying to be kind just because of this idiotic food rule! "Good morning, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne," he greeted. He returned Derf's smile with a fleeting one of his own, giving him a polite nod of acknowledgement. Oh, if only you knew... he thought. He wanted to be positive for his students. He really did, but it was taking every scrap of energy he had to hide his true self enough to comply with the headmaster's rules. There wasn't enough left in him to put on a happy act... Quote:

Her eyes glanced over the damaged dummies as she walked into class. She hoped they'd be learning healing charms - which it did seem obvious they would be doing - so she could keep up and learn more skills for her future as a healer. Or a nurse. Or just.. somebody who could apply bruise paste to someone. "Morning Professor," she greeted quietly, only making a brief amount of eye contact before standing at her station. She didn't chat, nor did she look anywhere but the front of the classroom. Gaston glanced at his watch. It was almost time to start, but he would wait a bit longer for stragglers. As soon as he glanced back toward the door, Natalie appeared and greeted him. He nodded politely. "Good morning, Miss McKinley," he replied, watching as she stood behind one of the vacant desks. She stood behind one of the desks and took in what was there. Hurt dummies. Were they going to be learning some healing charms? That would be pretty cool!
It didn't take long for Hanna to feel warm enough to take her scarf off, which she did, draping it over her chair. That wasn't against the rules was it? Hopefully Professor Gaston wouldn't be fired after the lesson, either. Sigh. Hannah arrived soon after. The lip biting was immediately picked up on, and it earned a concerned eyebrow raise from the professor. Gaston may have to hide his empathy to keep his job, but he couldn't turn it off completely. He gave the girl a small, though still hopefully encouraging smile as he returned her nod. "Good morning, Miss Newton," he said. He wanted to ask if she and her family were planning to visit him and Rose over the holidays, but now was not the time or place. He supposed he'd find out soon enough.
After some time had passed, Gaston checked his watch again. Exactly 9:00 on the dot... time for class to begin. He pointed his wand at the door, and it closed (a bit louder than intended) and locked itself just after Hannah's arrival. If anyone asked, he locked the door so late arrivals would have no choice but to draw attention to themselves, but it was really intended to keep unwanted visitors out rather than students in. He didn't want to be caught off guard if Scrimgeour decided to spy on his lessons! "Good morning, class," he said, never moving from his spot at the front of the room. "Please be seated."
He glanced out at the students as he waited for them to take their seats. He was pleased that they'd all remembered to remain standing today; he really hated handing out punishments, especially for something that trivial! After a couple of moments passed, He went on, "As you've probably guessed, today we'll be covering healing charms." It was practically a necessity, given recent events!
With a wave of his wand, the writing on the board vanished, and the words: Healing Charms appeared in big bold letters. "Look at the dummies in front of you. Take a quick moment to assess their injuries, and name a spell you think would help them. If you can't think of the name of the spell, describe what it does." OOC: Class has officially started! Feel free to jump in at any time; just pretend your charrie has been here all along. Late arrivals will receive IC consequences. As Gaston said, all you have to do is name a spell to help the dummies. You have 21 - 24 HOURS (12:30 - 3:30 AM EDT Oct. 6) to answer the question... I have to move us on a few hours earlier than usual because of a RL appointment. So sorry!
