Alice listened with a judgment free expression as Jessa assured her nothing was wrong and that they had been excused. She nodded slowly and was just about to dismiss them both when Derfael spoke up.
"Rule breaking?" she asked, eyes narrowing and voice sharpening ever so slightly. What was the meaning of these words?! She glanced from one to the other, demanding an explanation while simultaneously trying to determine whether she had misunderstood his words. "Please explain what rule breaking you have been excused for, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne."
