Smiling at her, he easily passed over the box of bowtruckle treats to the brunette. "I believe in you," he offered as encouragement. "You've put up with Picketta and her attitude." Even a few attacks and was still wanting to try so that said something about her tolerance for creatures, whether or not the Slytherin was willing to admit to it. "Just remember to look non-threatening. Kinda the most important bit in dealing with bowtruckles on a first go."
Which Natalie was doing WONDERFULLY from what he could see - since he was trying to keep his distance a bit so the bwotruckle only had one large mass to deal with at a time. Less threatening that way and its adorable little beady eyes could fix all its attention on her. Watching her, transfixed by her motions and gentle ambiance - though her nervousness did not escape him either - the Hufflepuff honestly forgot that he had a task to accomplish as well. Because...it was really beautiful to watch. She was beautiful and he hoped the bowtruckle could see and appreciate that. The tone in which she was speaking was pleasant as well and while he wanted to offer some advice, he refrained. His deeper tone would distract and be counterproductive to the potential bond forming.
So instead, he began to slowly sidestep his way to take the scene in in profile, holding his breath as the saucy little creature strut its way closer to her outstretched hand. His encouragement was helpful, of course, since Derf knew what had to be done and because he knew Natalie so well. So, if Derf believed in her, then she believed that she could do it too. And it WAS true that she had "put up" with Picketta, but that wording made it sound like Natalie didn't like her, which wasn't true. Natalie liked Picketta because she was so protective and possessive of Derf. She was like his personal little guardian.
Look non-threatening. "Right," she replied, trying to look relaxed and.. pleasant. She kept her movements slow and watched the little creature look curiously into her palm. "It's okay," she said softly, her voice in a higher pitch than usual, like she was talking to a baby or a puppy, hoping that they would find it soothing.
At that point, she wasn't even paying attention to Derf anymore, because this was close as she had ever been to a Bowtruckle that wasn't out to slice her open with their sharp little fingers. In fact, it looked like it was okay with her. She watched it step closer to her fingers... and then reach down to grab some treats. Natalie beamed, but contained her excitement enough so she wouldn't startle the little creature. "There you go. Is that yummy?" Wood lice... delicious snack, right? She caught Derf out of the corner of her eye and hoped that he was doing well, but she didn't want to look away just in case it made the bowtruckle.. worry. Or something. |
