"That they do! Very good, Penny." Tristan said with a small smile. It was slightly adorable how excited the girl was about the creatures. Bowtruckles were really fun. Quote:

Abra perked up when Professor Wayland told them all what they would be studying that day; more than anything he was surprised that his answer had been so... right. Not that he thought it was wrong, because he'd known bowtruckles for sure lived in trees, but... well... yeah. He watched the bowtruckle - Dahlia - in Wayland's hand for a minute, and when the question was posed, Abra raised his hand again. "They guard trees that you get wand wood from...?" he said simply, and though he phrased his answer as a question, he said it with a touch more confidence this time. It helped, you know, getting things right in class and getting positive reactions from professors. Helped him relax just a bit. Tristan gave Abra an encouraging smile. He always seemed to give his answers as questions, and wondered if it was a confidence thing. "That they do. Mostly the Wiggen Tree, but any tree you can get wand wood from they live in." He nodded and smiled before moving on to the next hand in the air. Quote:

Bowtruckles!! They were cute and the one that Professor Wayland had on his shoulder was just too adorable. Dahlia. They could be dangerous though...
Kaitlynn put her hand in the air, "They are small in height growing only up to eight inches max." "Very good Kaitlynn, and as you can see Dahlia is about six inches, so she is small for a full sized adult." Tristan said with a smile. Dahlia was one of his favorites out of the barn Bowtruckles. And they were so adorable. (Not that he would ever call them adorable. 13-year-old boys are waaaaay too cool to call things adorable. But he would think it!) He knew they could be a little aggressive if they felt threatened, but he hoped he'd get to hold a friendly one today! "That they are, Benji! And we have quite the branch in the barn." All were very different and unique in attitude and so fun to watch. Quote:

And trust me when I say you do not want to get on their bad side." He almost involuntarily shivered at the memories from his experiences with the little creatures. Quote:

"They camouflage well in their home trees, because they look like flora... but they are most definitely creatures. And, also opinion not fact, but they're very very charming." Not biased at all by the fact that she'd been able to amuse one recently with a dancing flower. "They do camouflage really well and can be quite charming...especially when they want food." As he said this Dahlia gently poked his cheek, and he grinned giving her another fairy egg. "Point proven I think." He said giving Chloe a wink before moving on. Quote:

There are some that can be brown as well to blend in better with the tree bark." He shook his head then moved on to the next hand in the air. Quote:

At least that was what she thought she had read somewhere once... "That is correct, they only live in those regions. Very good, Madison!" Tristan said with a smile and a nod before turning to the next student. Quote:

Tristan was not expecting a second year to whip out that answer. "That, Anabeth, is indeed correct. And for those of you who don't know what the Phasmatodea order of insects or the Leptynia Hispanica is...they are better known as Stick Bugs. Very good, Anabeth." He said nodding his approval. Quote:

"And they, err... eat insects," she added a second later to save her outburst. Tristan coughed to cover up his chuckle at that out burst. It was no secret that Derfael loved Bowtruckles...he had adopted one from Tristan. He nodded at that second answer, "Yes, they eat wood lice to be specific, as well as fairy eggs. Very good, Natalie." He said with a smirk before turning to the next student. Quote:

She was tempted to bring up her experiment regarding making wood lice cookies for Picketta, too, but it seemed like more of a tangent than anything constructive. Tristan nodded listening to Stasya's answer. He smiled, "That is very true, they do indeed. And this little one here, though small, is the bossiest of the Barn Branch." He said with a chuckle glancing at Dahlia who had made her way back into his shirt pocket. Quote:

"Do Bowtruckles eat them, Sir?" Tristan noticed Hanna's very red cheeks and decided not to ask. He listened to her answer that was more of a question, giving her a small smile. "Actually they are more like a Stick Bug than a Praying Mantis but I can see how you would think that." He said with a nod. "No their don't eat Praying Mantis. Far to big. They eat Wood Lice and Fairy eggs when they can find them." He said with a small smile. Quote:

"Professor..." She said after a moment's pause, her eyes briefly resting on the little green creature. "If they're only so big, how effective can they really be against an actual threat? I mean, granted, speed might be on their side and they must be quite agile, but......if one really wanted to gouge out our eyes, what's to stop us from scorching them and ending the attack--or firmly grabbing hold of them with protective handware?" And soon enough the Jessa that Tristan knew best was back and asking all the questions. He nodded along listening to her questions. "Speed and camouflage. They blend in entirely to well with their trees and can be really difficult to see. So if we can't see them, how would we know where to send a spell or jinx? Which by the way, you should never do." He said with a pointed look before adding, "Protective handware can only help so much. Protective eyeware on the other hand could help a lot. But knowing how to work with these creatures is your best option." He said with a nod before moving on. Quote:

He would never intentionally let harm come to his students. It's why he always taught them how to work with the creatures to earn their trust before letting them interact with them. Quote:

He gave her a disappointed look before turning back to the students hands that were still in the air. Quote:

Can't wait to see what we're doin' today!"
And with that the second year badger went to take his seat and prepare himself for the lesson. Hopefully, he'd steer clear of trouble and not lose anymore points. Tristan's mouth stretched into a hard line, and he crossed his arms across his chest, making sure to not harm Dahlia in his pocket. "I was doing great until you interrupted my lesson with your tardiness, Reese." He paused with a grimace. "That will be 10 points from Hufflepuff. I expect you to be fifteen minutes early to our next lesson to make up for your lost time." With that he turned to the students patiently waiting to be called on. Quote:

Tristan nodded with a small smile, the annoyance of the tardy student still running through him, as he listened to Bel's answer. "That is very true, Bel. Thank you." Ewan couldn’t imagine Dahlia doing that but he also knew that you should never judge creatures by their looks. Tristan gave Ewan an encouraging smile and nodded. "That is correct, Ewan. Thank you." He said, appreciating the change in behavior. Quote:

He was sketching out a really really rough version of the animal so he would know what it looked like and was ready to learn more. He continued to listen to his classmates while trying to input something... anything. Tristan's eyes scanned the room, noting that Patrick was being quiet. Either he didn't know much or so many people had answered already he couldn't give one. Which was fine. He gave Patrick a small grin before noticing another hand. Quote:

She didn't come to class to actually LEARN things!??! Honestly, Professor. The audacity!
'And she has a bit of a crush on me'
Honestly Professor WayOld had the biggest head she had ever come across. Seriously??? As if!
She chose against answering this question too. This whole lesson was starting to turn out real boring. Where was the flavor? When were they going to talk about a creature that really mattered. Aka. DRAGONS. Tristan scanned the area again, and noticed Zoryn not paying attention at all. He sighed and shook his head. He was never going to get through to that girl, was he? Quote:

He was surprised the Hufflepuff wasn't blabbering on about them already. "Sir, bowtruckles are kinda' mean," he said in an experienced sort-of way. But he had experienced it...the scratches. THE SCRATCHES. He glanced around to see if Derf had heard him. But...but...what if Derf took that offensively? After all, the prefect had LOVED his bowtruckle... "Well, I guess aggressive would be the better word than mean." Tristan nodded, "They are only mean or aggressive when they feel threatened. So if you have been hanging out with Derf and met Picketta, she is very protective of him..next time come prepared with Wood Lice...or a Fairy Egg. She'll be more receptive." He said with a wink. Anyway… She took notes on the answers and all the other stuff. What did she know about
them? ”I don’t know. But are they similar to stick bugs.” That sounded more like a question but that was her final answer. "Yes, Juniper they are very similar to Stick Bugs." He said with an encouraging smile and a nod. It looked like there was one more person with an answer. Quote:
Originally Posted by Lissy Longbottom Ok, Nettie officially needed a bowtruckle. It was SO CUTE!! She had read about them before but never expected them to be so ADORABLE in person. Still, her reading had also taught her that just because they LOOKED cute certainly didn't mean they always ACTED cute. She raised her hand. "Well, I remember reading that their favorite place to attack are the eyes," she explained. You know, the perfect organ to rip up with those little claws...OUCH. Her hurt her eyes just thinking about it. "It's not necessarily their favorite place...but they certainly do attack there most often. I know many wand makers that were caught off guard and lost an eye." He said with a smile that looked more like a grimace. Though cute, these creatures needed to be handled carefully. There were no other hands in the air waiting to be called on so he stood at the front of the class, and with a small smile began the long informative talk about Bowtruckles. "Alright, sounds like you all have the basics. We know that Bowtruckles' native range is western England, southern Germany, and very specific forests in Scandinavia. They can get no bigger than eight inches, can be green and look like they have leaves coming out of their heads, and can have brown parts that are the texture of tree bark. They have brown eyes to help them camouflage even more. They have very sharp and long fingers that help them to protect themselves, their families, and their home trees." He paused to let the blackboard catch up with him so that the students could write these things down in their notes.
After about a minute he continued, "They eat Wood Lice and Fairy Eggs. The look very similar to Stick Bugs, which is what Muggles often confuse them for IF they see them because they are ridiculously difficult to spot unless they want to be seen." He said with a grin looking at Dahlia who was peaking out of his pocket. "Bowtruckles are considered Tree Guardians for their home tree, which are generally trees that are used for wand wood, though they mostly dwell in Wiggentrees, which for those who don't know, is a magical Rowan tree. Their claw like fingers are mostly used to dig out wood lice and are very effective for that, and they also use them in defense when they feel threatened, typically going for their opponents eyes. They are typically peaceful creatures as long as they don't feel threatened." He paused, "Oh and as we said, a group of Bowtruckles is called a Branch." He smiled, and gave Dahlia another handful of dried wood lice. She was being so very well behaved right now.
He watched as the blackboard caught up with him, and as the students took notes, waiting until he was absolutely sure they were ready for instructions. "Alright everyone, right now I want you to get into pairs. And," with a flick of his wand a stack of boxes, each one the size of shoe boxes, containing a container of Wood Lice, a jar of Fairy Eggs, and 2 pairs of industrial worker goggles, appeared, "once you have figured out your partners, one of you come and collect your supplies. Once everyone has done that, we will get started on our activity." He smiled, "Get to it." He gave them a wink and waited patiently for them to get prepared. OOC: Thank you all for your awesome answers! This is a pretty straight forward, and easy for you, Mini Activity. Find a partner and get your supplies. You will have until the 22nd at 3 pm EST to complete this so have fun! post as much as you'd like! If you have questions for the Professor make sure you put "Professor" in the title of your post so I don't miss it!
