It was almost as if to prove a point, maybe. That he hadn't been broken. Though, on the flip side, one could also argue that he was falling in line by performing the task with such diligence. He reckoned it was two sides to the same coin and just decided to leave it at that, not wanting to overthink nor spiral on account of the new headmaster and his Divination lackey.
He had never been particularly attached to his badge, but walking around without it pinned to his robes now somehow made him feel surprisingly naked. It wasn't about status for him or to be recognized and acknowledged by his peers as some chosen one, that limelight had never particularly appealed to him, but it was something far more deep seeded than that...and he wasn't sure he could properly explain the feeling to anyone.
So it was, with his hands shoved in his trouser pockets, that he began making his way around the grounds just for a bit of fresh air. It helped him think, you know? He eventually found himself strolling along the wooden bridge, his ears bringing him to a stop nearby the source of the gentle humming.
"Maybe I shoulda brought my guitar," he chuckled lightly when he came to a proper stop behind her. Lost in her thoughts was not a state you'd expect to find Julie Bellaire, but that was the state she'd happened to been in as Derfael had approached the middle of the bridge where she was so casually settled. She'd not heard him or sensed him at all, and wouldn't have noticed the Prefect at all if he hadn't spoke, wrenching the Slytherin from her loud thoughts and pulling her back into the present. Surprised but not startled, Julie turned to Derf and managed an amused smile. "What do people call it? a jam session? We could have had one of those." it was not a great joke, and Julie knew it the second it slipped past her unpainted lips but he'd caught her off guard and- well, to be entirely honest she hadn't even known Derfael had a guitar. Weird. "What are you up to?" She asked, now leaning with her back to the banister and the view beyond it. Bad form to turn away from a friend, no matter how understanding said friend might have been or how much she wanted to. Manners persisted no matter how down, confused, angry, happy or furtive Julie might have felt. There was something strange here- something in the Hufflepuff's appearance that was irking Julie but she could not quite figure it out. Like one of those photos in kids books where you were meant to spot the difference except the curly-haired witch was working from memory alone. No easy task no matter how perceptive the young woman might have been.
