Skyler blinked yeah, she had no idea about what she was even talking about. She hadn't had the first clue about a computer much less what she was talking about. Skyler remained silent, a bit afraid to answer anyway. What and have her answer be wrong because she obviously knows what the question is even though she's a pureblood? She let out a small sigh rolling her eyes in annoyance. She then tensed afraid that she would be called out on about her sighing as the side effects of her inner thoughts leaked out into the world. The look of fear was evident on her face.

I'm fine, I promise I won't fall asleep in class." Maybe he'll ask Beth to poke him in extreme cases.

Speaking of Beth, he jumped in his seat when he felt fingers through his hair. He waved back to Stella as he'd caught her eye and, before he even registered what Beth was saying, she was seated next to him and being very... Beth. "Of course, friend," he grinned, unsure why Beth put all that emphasis on friend, but he was going to play along.

Anyway. Computers.

Professor Stewart had already lost him when she mentioned... hard..ware... and... soft..ware? Were there solid pieces, and squishy ones... within the computer thingy? What in the world did they mean? Needless to say, he had no clue what network muggles used to gather information... he knew what phones were, but that was about it.

Notes. Had to take notes.

He had had a friend, back before Hogwarts, a muggle friend from his drama club whose house he had visited just the once and whose computer they had played on. Even back then Abra had known how important it was to ACT and not appear as stunned and amazed by the machine as he had felt, though, looking back, he wasn't sure how successful he had been.

Hardware? Software? Programmes? Abra's tired brain struggled to make much sense out of these words and he tried to work out whether or not he had heard them before. Most likely, he hadn't.

When the question was asked, Abra wracked his brains for a moment or two, but the answer only came to him once he heard Bel say it. It was hard to decide whether he had already known and she had jogged his memory, or if his brain was trying to just go right ahead and steal the answer and pretend he knew it. Either way, that was what he thought it was, so Abra, not wanting to repeat it (especially if he WAS accidentally stealing the answer), kept quiet and waited to see if he was likely to be able to contribute anything of value in response to the next question.

He somehow doubted it.

Spotting someone waving in her general direction she turned her head just in time to see if was her fellow Gryffindor. Smiling she wiggled her fingers at the younger lioness, Stella.

Oh, the lesson was starting. Rylee shifted on the bench to listening to what was being said by Professor Stewart. The answer was easy. It was already being said several times over. The world wide web also known as the internet. There really wasn't any need for her to repeat it again. Swinging her feet back and forth beneath the bench she kept quiet waiting for the next question.

Hogwarts wouldn't have all the technologies muggles were used to using, so they didn't feel it was overly necessary for her to learn how to use them. Her school had done a lot of paper work, and used books for research. That was how she liked it, though. Books were one of her favourite things, and had never let her down. She didn't ever rely on a computer, so she didn't know a lot about them.

That was why the thirteen-year-old Ravenclaw was lost for information when it came to Professor Stewart's question. She didn't know what the network she was talking about was. Some of her classmates DID however, and Hanna took note of every suggestion.

Besides, the lesson was just about to start. Wouldn't want to miss out on it, would she now?

There really wasn't any point in answering the question, seeing as everyone kept giving repeat answers at this point. Was all creativity dead or what?

He was much happier daydreaming anyway.

So that’s exactly what he did.

Elbow on the desk, chin resting in his palm, the Slytherin simply stared off into space.

And what was more was that she was SMILING at him. He smiled back at her, not really knowing what to say apart from mentioning the computers and asking her if she was excited about the lesson too.

It was probably a good thing that Stella ended up sitting next to him as well, mostly because it made him feel a little bit more comfortable. But then she started asking questions, questions about Divination, and that...... changed. The smile was gone and he tried hard not to fidget where he sat. "Uh......" She was being nice, yeah, and it was nice but..... the memory? Yeah, no.

"I'm okay. Yeah, I'm okay. At least I'll maybe have muscles from those pushups now, eh?" ..... That was bad. That was a very bad attempt at humour. Don't do that again, Lulu. "Are you okay?"

It seemed like it was his lucky day because now, not only was Stasya sitting near them but so was an older Slytherin boy (Zachary) and the Hufflepuff Prefect (Derf)?! Woah. W O A H. Although, all of this was short-lived when Stella started talking about Divination to him as well and Lucas..... just held his breath. She was being nice, she was, but what if this only upset him?

He couldn't really think on this for very much longer because the Professor had shut the door, causing him to switch his attention from those sitting around him to the Professor. Did he like computers? Well, yeah! He wasn't an expert, really, but he knew some things about computers. They taught about them, they did. So it wasn't completely new to him, something that made him feel a little bit more comfortable.

Lucas sat there, listening and writing down anything he could in his little notebook. But something he didn't understand was what the Professor said about hardware and software and programmes. Frowning slightly, he underlined that little sentence once.... twice.... three times. Please explain what a hardware and software is and why one was hard and the other was soft. Please.

As for the answer to the question, well, most people had said it hadn't they? And apart from repeating the answer, he didn't really have anything to offer so he just stayed quiet. There was no point in saying the same thing again. Though, he did offer an encouraging smile to Stella and her rambling.

As the class began, Dorian stopped spinning his pen and placed it neatly on the righ side of his notebook in case he needed to make notes. He looked at the Professor to give his full attention and his feet was tapping on the floor in excitment as he waited for the magic words 'play video games' .....But....it did not come. For a second, he sighed dissapointedly but not too loud because he did not want to come over as rude.

Since some of the students had already provided the answers, Dorian didn't think of answering himself. What was the point anyway? So for now, he stayed silent.

It was strange how on edge she felt ever since that Divination lesson. Of course she knew that her other professors weren’t so....strict but it didn’t resolve the feeling. There were still small pools of anxiety steadily surfacing everytine she went into a classroom. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was expecting the worse.

”Hey.” She greeted Mark when he took the spot next to her. He hadn’t seemed to thrilled with the hat’s decision but she didn’t know how she’d go about fixing something like that.

As the lesson began, she sat and listened to many of her classmates repeat more or less the same answer. Not at all in the mood to be a scratched record, Jessa simply kept her gaze on the window and waited for them to be ready to move on.

Also good job stewart, the professor was growing on her… Somewhat. Being her head of house she had to at least be okay with her. Or she guessed anyway.

Juni might’ve been daydreaming in the middle of the lesson already to realize that professor Stewart had even addressed the class with a question. The sixth year just sat there, staring into the computer screen. Maybe she know the answer to the question maybe she didn't. The world may never know.

Probably they were going to learn about that, right?

Naturally, there were a few that remained quiet. They were the ones who were unsure of the answer, shy, felt the answer had been given already, tired, distracted or something else of the sort. At least they were planning on taking notes, yes? Possibly everyone with the exception of Max. “Mr. Carden?’’ Kaysha prodded after quietly drawing near to his station. “Please focus.’’

"The internet, professor?" Best way to check how the surf was! Which honestly was the main thing she ever used it for at home. Having a muggle parent and a muggleborn parent meant that of course it was the norm for her family, even if they weren't really the sort who spent lots of time using it, it was just there.

Stella bit her lip, she was a halfblood and her mother was muggleborn but she didn't know much about computers other how to use them but she knew some. Stella raised her hand. " Usually that's the internet isn't it? computer network is a set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources so that isn't right is it?" Stella asked. Oops..she was rambling blushing she remained quiet.

Raising his hand and getting a little run over from rules. There were so many this term. He stated, “well there’s the internet, but back in the day there ere different providers to get that service. My friends always talk of how slow it was. But we use it for everything from gaming, emails, to video chatting. Kind of funny how it brings people together.” he hoped his answer was sufficient and his mistake of eating would be overlooked.

She raised her hand. "The internet," she told her simply. There was no need to elaborate on that, they all knew what the internet was...right?

“You all are correct!’’ Kay strode over to the white board, grabbed the marker then neatly proceeded to write “INTERNET’’ in the center and at the top of it. “Before I proceed, I’d just like to offer a definition for hardware and software. Hardware are the physical components that we can touch. For example...’’ She stepped to the closest computer. “The mouse.’’ This was pointed out to the class. “The monitor, the Central Processing Unit also called the CPU.’’ Point and point. “These are all hardware. In addition to those, others include the printer- used to print documents and images, scanner- used to send an image or document to the computer, among other devices that can be used with computer. Software are those programmes used to help the computer work- like programmes used to type or play games.’’ After explaining, Kay took her time to write out the definitions on the board.

“If no one has questions, we will move on.’’ After waiting a bit for any raised hands, she ploughed on. “The idea for the Internet first came about in the early 1900s but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the first prototype was made and used. Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn were the two computer scientist that were credited with the invention of the protocols used to foster the Internet. From then on, more developments were made. Most notably... the World Wide Web.''

A pause was made here both for breath and to write some notes.

SPOILER!!: The World Wide Web!

“The World Wide Web is most notably referred to as the Web. It is a system of sorts, an information system, found on the Internet. It basically allows a host of documents to be connected to others. It can be identified by Uniform Resource Locators also known as URLs. A URL is simply an address of a World Wide Web Page. Like this.’’ Kay wrote on the board:

www.yahoo.com

“Addresses or URLs will usually begin with ‘www’, which stands for... you guessed it! World Wide Web!’’ She beamed as if this was the most amazing thing ever.

Well.

Yeah.

What else was there to say now? Lucas just nodded at Bel and Bettie. "What they said. The internet is the same thing as the world wide web, right? THat's why websites usually start W W W dot...right?" Even if he was getting ahead of himself, he couldn't help his curiosity. It was nice to feel SAFE in his curiosity unlike in Professor Blegh-er's class. Ugh. Just the thought of him made Lucas make a barf face, which hopefully no one thought was about them. WHOOPS.

Though soon class was beginning and, well, there really was only one answer to that question and it had already been offered up a few times...so the Hufflepuff tried to pick at his brain for something else to bring up. Something that maybe he had seen in one of those muggle TV crime dramas that his dad was so fond of. Cybercrime, which was kinda fun to say, had come up a bunch of times in varying degrees and was, you know, kinda a huge thing in the muggle world. Thankfully not something they at Hogwarts had to worry about so much.

.................or did they?

Holy hippogriffs...what if chizpurfles were to nibble away at a computer infested with one of those virus thingies that one could get from the internet? Would they get sick too? Would said virus then somehow mutate into something magical and spread once said chizpurfles moved on and infested the fur and feathers of other creatures?

.......he was zoning out quite a bit at the moment, thinking and going way way way off tangent with what the actual question had been and expected answer.

There was also some song he had heard about the internet being for....corn was it?

Right. What had the question been?

OH BUT WAIT!

"Isn't...er...aren't...the Internet and the...World Wide Web two different things?" At least he thought some technology savy muggle on one of the shows had rambled on about that once or twice. Derf, on the other hand, mostly thought about spiders when webs were brought up. "Well...not two DIFFERENT things but one is inside the other ... or something... and they aren't syn...syn...synonymous?"

“Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne is quite correct. The two are different. If you will take notes now, kiddos. A question on this just might make an appearance in your exams.’’ Here, the woman winked. “To sum up as explained earlier: the Internet is a global network of networks while the web is the collective information accessible on the internet.’’

SPOILER!!: Uses of the Internet!

Were they components to build a single computer? ....But how could a ware be...soft? He wondered if the insides of the computer were made from soft-like materials....like sponges or cotton? That would be interesting to see.

Nathan let the others answered. There was no need for him to chip in when the answer he already thought of first has been given. It must be called the in-ter-net. But he was curious of its usage, so he raised his hand. "They used the internet to....do some research too, don't they?"

Kaysha bobbed her head. “They most certainly do. Unfortunately, researching the internet has replaced good, old fashioned library researches vastly in the Muggle world as practically everything had become digitalised.’’

* * * * * *

“Now for the fun part. Earlier, I showed you the CPU. If you note, there in the center, there is a small silver button. I’d like for you to push on it once. If done properly, the button will be highlighted in blue. A few seconds later, your monitor will begin to boot up. Allow the system to do so, please. If you need further clarification, please raise your hand and I’ll assist or you can ask a classmate who can help.’’

In the meanwhile, she would walk among the tables to see how things were going along.

OOC: HIII! Soooo, this is actually the start of the mini activity and is divided into three parts. Basically, they will each last twenty four hours but catchup will be accepted. Answering the first question after this post will NOT be counted though.

Each student is sitting in front of a computer that looks like this.

On a side note, in my rules state that I appreciate ‘out of the box thinking’. What this means is that your kiddos’ answers do not have to be right at all times. It can be something you or them might think silly, something that loosely connects to the topic, something not at all relating to the topic but in your charrie’s head, it does, etc. This works whether the question actually has a single correct answer or not. Don’t be afraid to let their imaginations go free. As long as it’s SS appropriate
