Hogwarts RPG Name: Calvin Fletcher Graduated | I’m right, you’re wrong. They don’t call me a Seer for nothing. SPOILER!!: Replies SPOILER!!: Ms. Macindoe Quote:
Originally Posted by Tegz Bel would have preferred getting to sit next to some friends, but in general she was happy enough sitting with anyone, so it didn't bother her too much to have her seat assigned. Divination was still one of those classes she wasn't completely SURE about but so far she thought Professor Fletcher definitely came across as knowledgeable and she could respect that. The push ups? She watched the kids who got given them work through them out of the corner of her eye. That..... wasn't too bad of a thing. She'd rather get given them than have house points taken. Not that she'd try the professor on anything intentionally since that wasn't her nature but.... yeah. She could do push ups. And chin ups for that matter. All this fitness-related stuff going on lately? Totally up her alley. No complaints here whatsoever.
With her robes tightly tucked around herself for warmth against the Scottish air, Bel took notes with her book balanced on one knee. This was interesting stuff. She didn't really know a lot about this specific stuff but.... she put her hand up to try and contribute something anyway. "Professor, I don't know much about this kind of pyromancy because they didn't really do this same thing back home in 'stralia, but there IS a lot of fire-use there traditionally amongst the different indigenous peoples. Some tribes burned eucalyptus leaves as part of cleansing rituals for instance. So I think depending on where in the world the traditions are, it means different leaves or herbs or whatever might be used, ya know? Because I guess fire needs to be fueled.... so if you want your fire to have some kind of specific ritual or magical purpose, you probably have to fuel it with the right stuff. So I think... what I'm getting at is to control a fire you have to control its fuel, whether that's magical fuel like from someone's intent or some kind of mundane fuel or something else." Bel reasoned out. It made sense to her anyway.
As the first set of hands began to rise, Calvin's gaze momentarily fell on those who'd been silent during the last round of questioning. He was taking mental notes, even as he listened to the Hufflepuff Captain offer her input. As it turned out, he didn't hate her answer. On the contrary. "You're perfectly right, Ms. Macindoe. Practices and materials do differ depending on what part of the world you happen to be in but it doesn't change the fact that the fire will need to be sustained." He nodded his approval. "I like that you've also mentioned it doesn't have to be a purely physical source of fuel." The man hoped the others were still diligently taking notes. "Depending on the sort of fire you're tending and the purpose of the session, the diviner's intent may be one of the most crucial element." SPOILER!!: Ms. Prichard Quote:

All things were being filled away in her brain somewhere for later use.
As the first question was asked the third year pulled out some parchment and her quill opting to take notes for the moment. By the time the second question was asked she was ready. Raising her hand she answered when it was her turn. "When the flames of the fire begin to die down the pyromancer studies the pictures he sees in the still burning coals. If one picture stands out more than the rest and burns brighter than the others it brings good fortune." That was about all she really knew on it. Divination wasn't exactly her best class.
Ah, one of those that had been silent on the last question. It was wise of her to choose to speak up. "Mostly correct." He said, pleased to know some of them at least had gotten through the readings. "One picture standing out more than the others is the expected outcome, it's the prophecy of the future you are trying to uncover. If no such image appears, the session ends and another begins in another 24 hours. That's common place. It's having the coals themselves glow that brings the good fortune."
A point it sounded like the Head Girl was bringing up. SPOILER!!: Ms. Cambridge Quote:

This wasn't her friend's night at all.
Still, she would not speak out of turn. The Ravenclaw shot her friend a sympathetic look as she finally sat but tried not to think too much about the turn this lesson had steadily been taking. Nope nope nope. For a brief moment, Jessa mentally went over all the rules again, trying to make sure she didn't cross any. Her arms were not made to hoist the rest of her up even once, let alone 25 times.
Not wanting to be stuck staring at the man while he spoke, Jessa took out her parchment and quill and began scribbling the things she for the most part already knew. Avoiding his gaze was now one of her priorities.
Having heard his reaction to the silent students, she found herself raising her hand, even before her brain could properly formulate an answer. Had to be on the safe side. Finally, something came. "If...if the coals glow it's thought to bring good or great fortune." For whatever reason.
Aaaand right back to not making a peep.
Calvin nodded, turning now to face the blonde who was essentially reiterating what he'd just explained to the young Gryffindor. "Yes, glowing coals as the pyromancy session draws to a close is known to bring good fortune." For all the trouble he thought he'd get out of her, at least she was keeping up with the lesson and not one of the reasons he'd need a a potion by the end of the night. SPOILER!!: Ms. Calavarez Quote:

Luce's cheeks and nose turned bright red from being called out for being silent. But she took with straight shoulders and a nod. He was the adult, right? Right. "My brain is functioning well...Sir," she said, somewhat controlling a quiver in her voice. Her legs though...those lil' sticks were trembling away. "I simply didn't have an opinion," she added quietly. So really, why waste his time, y'know?
Luce nodded anyway. A response. He wanted a response. Well...he IS the adult soooo...
Ignoring the hard thumping that now flooded her ears thanks to that EMBARRASSING moment, the young witch listened...
...then stopped.
Ignorant? Who he calling ignorant? Muggles? MUGGLES?
Luce's eyebrows pinched together. Her hand slowly, but decisively slid up into the air. "Can they be considered ignorant if they didn't believe in the real works of magic? If they hadn't been properly educated in it?" she asked, that tremble making itself present.
If muggles had been properly taught about magic maybe their world would be different.
And maybe she paid more attention to that because mom IS a muggle and the word ignorant did not just go along with her.
He may have pointed out that not having an opinion--something that came quite naturally to most even without much thought meant her brain was, in fact, not functioning to its full ability but her next statement side tracked him completely.
First of all, this was the second question this one wasn't answering and it didn't bode well for her. Second, "At some point in your life, Ms. Calavarez, I suggest you invest in a dictionary. Ignorance, by definition, is a lack of knowledge. Not being educated in the ways of magic, being none the wiser to the fact it exists does imply that muggles do lack knowledge--on this particular topic. So yes, I can call them ignorant where magic is concerned and their portrayal of it. As you're so passionate about it, I would like a 2000 word essay, handed in by the end of this week on ignorance, why it applies to muggles and its impact on muggle society and culture. You will hand it in no later than midday, on Friday." If she knew what was good for you. "Now I suggest you stick to the topics actually being discussed unless you'd like another essay." SPOILER!!: Ms. Carden

But they DID have permission to now, so Max sat himself down on his log and tried his hardest to make it look like he was concentrating. Concentrating wasn’t an easy task though. Bonfires just made him think of roasting marshmallows and sausages and thinking of food was making his tummy rumble. “Uhm… I read this book once, and there was this one character who could control fire with his mind,” Max piped up, raising his hand. “And he could manipulate it however he wanted and create huge fireballs and whirlwinds and no-one really stood a chance against him and it was totally cool and……. no wait, I think that was called pyrokinesis.”
Not pyromancy. Ooops.
While the answer (inappropriate to the topic as it was) could've fit in with the first question, it had nothing to do with the question he'd just asked. The man's eyes narrowed dangerously. Mr. Carden had remained silent through the first and had now set out to provoke him. "Are you intentionally trying my patience, Mr. Carden? I wouldn't recommend it. The question was on the practices, elements and methods of pyromancy. The time for silly stories is passed." In case he hadn't noticed. "Go ahead. Keep it up. You're working for it." He continued, none at all impressed. First the lack of greeting then the refusal to answer and now jabbering on about nonsense as a means of distracting others from the topic.
These student leaders were something else. SPOILER!!: Ms. Swann Quote:

He would need to calm down again. Calvin took a small breath before turning to the next student. "Very good, Ms. Swann. There is, indeed, a method that involves the burning of laurel leaves." Just breathe, Calvin. SPOILER!!: Mr. Katharos Quote:

Rude, yes...but funny. In any other class he would have masked the laugh as a cough but in this class he simply bit his lower lip to not make a sound and stared at the fire, pretending to be concentrating.
And then he looked back up in curiousity when he heard the Professor say Derf's name and detention. Merlin's Beard what had that Prefect gotten himself in to now? He felt kind slightly bad for the guy but ...not really. And now he felt like a bad person because it had been Derf who had helped him out during the first SORE training.
Anyway, when they were told to finally sit down, the Ravenclaw did so and after some thinking about the next question he put his hand up. And then lowered it back down because someone else had said what he had wanted to say and he didn't think that the Professor would appreciate repeated answers.
He stared at Dorian, expecting an answer as he'd raised his hand. In truth, he'd have expected one even if he hadn't lifted his hand. Surely the boy had heard the warnings he gave to those who'd been silent during the last round. "I suggest you find something to say, Mr. Katharos." SPOILER!!: Ms. Newton Quote:

Hanna, seeing how people were treated if they didn't give an answer, decided just to use her previous one. It wasn't good enough then, but perhaps it would be now. She raised her hand again and said "One thing to be avoided, Professor, would be getting burnt by the fire."
.............................. "Alright. Sure." He conceded, unwilling to make an issue out of the girl stating the painfully obvious. "You're correct, Ms. Newton. It would be good practice to not have yourself become too integrated in the session. That would throw off your concentration and there's no telling what sort of reading you would end up with."
It was an answer and it wasn't inherently wrong. He was ready to move on. It was important to know how to choose your battles--something some of these students had yet to learn. SPOILER!!: Mr. Yoon Quote:

It was one thing to wake up early, but stay in bed and read a bestiary, and something entirely different to wake up early to run.
Now, his knowledge of pyromancy was rather limited, but he did know this one thing, so he raised his hand. "I know of this one technique - you can write something, or a question, on a piece of paper and burn one corner. It's a bad omen if the paper is completely destroyed." And it was basically pyromancy for dummies, what he'd just said, but he didn't fail to notice the way Fletcher eyed the silent ones, so he thought he'd give it a try.
Though saying dumb things won't get him far, either. "Yes, very good." After Ms. Newton's response, the man felt like he would take whatever he could get. The fact this wasn't SUCH obvious knowledge was enough for him. SPOILER!!: Ms. Chosen Quote:

She'd chosen to continue at NEWT level because it was the only subject without a theoretical portion, but was it worth being terrified stiff in class?
The Gryffindor had planned to say nothing in response to the question, hugging her knees to her chest instead and trying not to breathe too deeply, in case she'd start coughing, but the fact that nobody brought up salt was starting to bother her. "We're meant to sprinkle salt onto the embers once the fire dies, and it's important to step away quickly, and wait for the spitting to stop before trying to read the coals. Many pyromancers have burned themselves being too eager."
Or, at least, that's what she remembered reading for her OWLs. But Faith's memory wasn't the best, and it really wouldn't do to count on her to have the right answer. "Another good point." He said for the benefit of those who may have been more selective with their note taking. "Eagerness is to the avoided. Not only can it be dangerous when working with fire, but it can also interfered with the accuracy of the reading."
He had no worries these students would get themselves burned tonight....but if he was honest, he wasn't expecting much from their readings either. SPOILER!!: Mr. Lowe Quote:

But so far so good.
When a question was asked again, Zachary was reluctant to speak up - but what choice did he have? Clearly being in the background wasn't going to cut it for this class. So the fairly new Slytherin, finally pushed himself to speak, "you need to know how to practise a certain level of meditation too - in order to be able to be able to see clearly and contemplate what you see once the fire has died down"
Or so he vaguely remembered his mother rambling on about it.
This one....this student here. If there was a golden ticket, he would've won it. "An even better point." Than the one Ms. Chosen had made. "A clear mind is crucial no matter the form of divination you are practising." This was one of several reasons for his rule on not being a disruption during lessons. The divine arts required absolute concentration. "One way to achieve this is through meditation. Training the mind. This of course calls for a certain level of discipline as well." In case that escaped many of them.
Hopefully they'd written that down. SPOILER!!: Mr. Choi Quote:

With ease, mind you. He wasn't not in shape. Thank you, Baylen Brown, for getting this kid into better shape last term.
As soon as he finished, a little breathless and his arms feeling tingly, he stood up and crossed his arms. He didn't really feel like inputting again, not when what he said would be treated like that. He scuffled his shoe in the dirt a bit and bit his lip. Even if thought FIRE SAFETY WAS A GOOD THING TO MENTION because...some people just should NOT be allowed to be near or use fire ever. Just too dangerous for some folks. He kinda' hoped they'd get to do some pyromancy though because it seemed cool and fun and FIRE duh.
Also, why was Faith so smart? Lucas shot her an encouraging smile as she answered because he wanted her to feel nice about her answer even if Professor Grumpy-face might not do so.
While he didn't blame the boy's silence--why risk saying something stupid twice?--he didn't agree with it. Calvin gave the boy a hard look. "You are here to participate in the lesson, Mr. Choi, not sit there warming the log til it's time to head back inside."
Sitting there blankly would not be doing him any favours. SPOILER!!: Ms. Spinnet Quote:

She would have broken the rules to whisper to the girl now, but she was still exhausted from her three minute escapade.
And then the Derf thing happened.
ALRIGHT SOMEONE GRAB HER BEATER’S BAT BECAUSE SHE WAS READY TO KNOCK HIS BALDING HEAD RIGHT OFF HIS NECK.
Derf was pretty much the only good person left at this school. It’s not his fault that he just came back from an intense run and thought they were given the cue to sit???? The Gryffindor stole a glance over at Faith, trying to translate SO MANY things within a single look.
If Derf wasn’t allowed to sit then Zoryn wouldn’t be sitting either (anyone else and she wouldn’t have cared too much but Derf wasn’t just ‘anyone else’). Call it the pre-rebellion, if you will. And she’d make a show of it too. He never said anything about standing still.
The Gryffindor swayed side-to-side, swinging her arms around and thinking about his question (not seriously, of course). Things to be avoided? This class. Things she found strange? The fact that hair didn’t grow at the top of his head. She hoped HE’D burn himself from the fire. “Some practices involve burning herbs, like sage, to analyze symbols in the smoke,” she was going somewhere with this. “Hope that’s what we’re doing… It could help us get rid of the evil spirits looming around the castle this year.” The evil spirits being their balding divinations professor AND the headmaster. That last bit was implied.
It was a shame, a real shame. What was the shame might you ask? The Gryffindor had finally said something intelligent...and she was ruining it all with her actions.
Calvin scowled as she rose from her seat. He said sit. She decided to stand. An open act of defiance; a growing trend tonight it seemed.
The man took a small breath, willing himself to remain as calm as he'd been before she too decided to test his patience. "Sit down, Ms. Spinnet. I'll only ask you this one time." There was something in his tone.....something that spoke to action he was prepared to take but for now, he would allow her to redeem herself. SPOILER!!: Ms. Blackwell Quote:

I would say things to avoid would be negative thought and burning of certain herb because some are poisonous and maybe the same for wood."
Still trying to remain calm in the wake of the Gryffindor, Calvin nodded at the young Slytherin, having heard perhaps only half of what she said. Thankfully, what he did hear sounded solid in his book leaving him no further reason to be worked up. "Very good, Ms. Blackwell."
He could only assume that all of her answer made the same amount of sense as the portion he'd heard. SPOILER!!: Mr. Dakest Quote:

Or.... was it a question that he wasn't expecting an answer for? Lucas didn't know. He didn't know about anything in here. All he knew was that right now, he just wanted to be as far away from this lesson and this man as possible.
He just shook his head because uh, answering out of turn might make the man do something bad. Like ask for another 25 pushups. And his arms and legs were still feeling sore from before so he was kind of meeting him halfway. Yeah. Halfway.
When he started talking about pyromancy and what it is and all of that, Lucas reached into his bag and pulled out his notebook and a quill. Taking notes would give him something to do, yeah? Yeah. His notes were sloppy and messy because his hand was shaking but that was okay. It was a lesson still and he wanted to learn about the magic and the fire and what he was here to learn.
It was okay.
And he'd have Emma!cuddles later. He hoped.
But then the Professor man was asking another question and it left him stumped. What did he know about the fire magic? Nothing. Not really. He was here to learn this stuff and if he knew this stuff already, he couldn't need to be here, right? But he couldn't stay silent because he was sure the Professor man would make another rude comment about it - or worse - and he didn't want that.
He looked up, his eyes on the fire in front of him, and it took him a long time to come up with something but he did have an answer. He did! So he slowly raised his hand up in the air, still not looking at the Professor man. "Uh, well, some people like to burn things in the fire. And then they get..... symbols..... from the way the object burns, I guess. And that's how they get their answers....." His voice trailed off when he slowly came to realise how dumb his answer sounded. But it was still an answer, right?
Fine.
Another one he would accept.
Calvin could tell the boy was still somewhat shaken but was pleased to see he'd attempted at all. "More or less....yes. That's the basic gist of it. An object is burned, symbols deciphered, future uncovered." He could've berated him for stating the obvious but having let Ms. Newton's answer slide, there really was no reason to keep pressuring this first year. He nodded. "Good." He took his seat along with everyone else once they were given permission. Which was a minute or two after he'd asked the first question.. Everyone had answered as he was catching his breath.
Hufflepuff again. Calvin wiped his face as the boy took a seat on the log, finding his patience nowhere near where it had been when he'd first walked down to the lake to prepare for the lesson. Forget that he hadn't answered the question, his head was likely full of nothing but hot air with the way he was behaving tonight. "Are you hard of hearing or difficult to instruct?" He asked through gritted teeth. "I said you were to REMAIN standing for the DURATION of the lesson and you plop your bum down on a log like you own the place? 5 points from HUfflepuff, I want another 25 push ups. Honestly Juni couldn’t think of anything to contribute to lesson at this moment that wouldn’t get her into trouble. The last thing she needed right now was for her dad to think that she was giving her professors a hard time. Maybe if it wasn’t a divination lesson, those divination professors really thought that they can predict the future with anything. Sure sometimes it comes true but others it might be a chance of luck. Personally Juni didn’t believe most of it. But it was fun making the predictions.
But the second question she kind of had a answer for. ”In a Pyroscopy session, you burn a piece of paper on a white surface and then you examine the stain the paper leaves on the surface.” She nodded, just something a little different to add the class discussion.
He nodded to this student too. By this point, the man was in real danger of getting whiplash from the behaviour of the students in his lesson. One minute they were answering questions and behaving how they should, they next they were forcing his hand.
He was going straight to bed when this was over. "Very good, Ms. Primeaux. Thank you for the example." SPOILER!!: Ms. Destler Quote:

As soon as she was given permission to sit, she wasted no time in sitting. Getting her notebook, she began taking notes immediately, trying to keep up which led to a hasty scribble. She could rewrite it neater at a later time in her free time.
She raised her hand to give her answer. "From what I have read, those practicing pyromancy look for an image that stands out among the others. If none stand out, then they should start over. The medium burned depends on what answers you are looking for, if I recall. I know the appearance of the smoke has meaning as well, but I don't know the different meanings." She explained, knowing her wording could have been better, but she was still shaken and hoped the answer would be acceptable enough. "I've also read that it's important to avoid letting your own emotions cloud your judgement during a session as it can falsely influence what you see, leading to inaccurate interpretations."
While some of her points had already been touched upon, Calvin nodded along all the same while the first year rattled off her answer. One point did stand out for him however, and he would make note of it for the benefit of the note takers. "A good point, Ms. Destler. Hopefully that counted, it used fire after all right? But if not, at least she tried.
It took a bit more breathing but the man finally found himself calming down by some degree. "Yes, Ms. Livingston, there does exist a form of pyromancy that involves the flames of a candle." But before Derf could really say anything else on the subject, a FAR more pressing matter was raised. His quick glance around the classroom after returning had clearly been naive and misguided, seeing some people sitting and his brain filling in the rest. What was worse...he had gotten Penny in trouble as well. So rather than get right to the push ups - which he had no problem with and absolutely refused to let physical exertion take on a negative tone, the Hufflepuff opted to dig himself an even deeper hold.
After raising his hand to speak - you know, don't speak unless spoken too and all that.
"Sir, I apologize..." Sorta. For the sitting at least. And his tone was perfectly sincere - not to mention embarrassed. "...but if I hadn't encouraged Penny to sit then she would still be standing...." Remove him from the equation and the results would be different. And no, he wasn't trying to be a martyr here. Honest to goodness his conscious could not take Penny taking the bull blow of his actions. As for the detention well, that didn't sting as badly as being called entitled. Of all things. Though there was no way to respond to that without coming across entitled, the word was a true no win situation except to fall in line which, well, guess this Hufflepuff had become a bit of a wild Aethonan stallion since the inferi attack last term and was far from being broken. "....and you should get to know me first before assuming I am entitled, sir."
Which he reckoned serving detention would accomplish just fine.
Glancing feebly out of the corner of his eye at Penny in attempt at sending her an apologetic look, the sixth year dropped to the ground and began his set of 25 - arms flexing as his head looked straight ahead at the professors feet with his body in a perfectly straight line. Then it was up and down in a somewhat rapid succession.
As for the answer to the man's question...all Derf really know about was the focus needed - which a few had mentioned including an almost meditative state. Which, well, Derf was somewhat in right now himself as he looked straight ahead and focused on his push ups. Maybe if he looked beyond everything and into the flames he would see his own doom given how this class was going for him.
Also...he didn't see you there Zoryn, but he would feel even worse if you got in trouble because of him as well.
For now, it seemed he would be busy taking care of the escalating Hufflepuff problem. They were working hard to shake those stereotypes tonight. "That ultimately doesn't affect anything." He replied, his tone flat and quite frankly over this boy. "I am the Professor in this setting. The fact she chose to listen to her Prefect over the actual Professor speaks to poor decision making on her part. Just as she chose to sit, she could've chosen to ignore your negative influence and remain standing as the rest of the class was." She had eyes, she could've seen for herself that they were frankly the only two around the entire fire sitting, so no, he would not accept this attempt at martyrdom.
But it was the next sentence that really took the cake.
It took him several silent moments in which he played the boy's words over and over in his head. The man had had it up to here. Running further than instructed to, sitting when he wasn't instructed to, causing others to follow and now this.
Some example he was setting. First Years present, all seeing that it's entirely okay to just mouth off to a Professor. The cheeky gall of this one. "Hand over your badge." His words were delivered with an icy chill to them. "I will be having words with your Head of House about your behaviour and your inability to set a good example for those you were asked to help lead. Not another peep, unless it relates specifically to the task at hand. You will stop disrupting my lesson or you will be asked to leave." SPOILER!!: Ms. McCarthy Quote:

She stood up and tried to fight the big tears she could feel coming in her eyes. Looking around and wiping at her cheek she got down to do the pushups. With every push she felt the tears growing harder and harder to stop.
Once she was finally done she wrapped her arms around herself and stayed standing, but stayed quiet. She didn't know the answer, she was only a second year, she hadn't learned this before it was new. So she had no clue what to say.
After dealing with the Hufflepuff Ex-Prefect, Calvin felt he had very little patience left which wouldn't go over well for the young girl. "Have you suddenly forgotten how to speak?" He demanded. SPOILER!!: Mr. Dooley Quote:

Up to this point in his life had only seen two instances of this type of seeing.
Raising his hand, Patrick waited quietly and patiently to be called on to vocalize his answer. Once called on he took a deep breath, “some of the native tribes in areas of the United States use this method. Their seer goes to a small hut with a vent for smoke. They typically do this for name ceremonies to choose a new horns name. However I don’t see how the tribunal of leaders all see the same thing since it’s often in the interpretation of the seer as to what is seen.”
With furrowed brows Patrick turned his attention to the other students he saw raising their hands here and there. He was a bit unsure of how much sense he made, but figured It would all work out in the way it was supposed to. He turned the pen in his hand before xo inuinf his notes on today’s lesson.
Like Ms. Macindoe, Mr. Dooley also had an example from another part of the world. Professor Fletcher nodded. "It is interesting how something like that works out, yes. These are trained seers with years of experience under their belt. Many of them do possess the sight and there is some amount of discussion about the images they see before a name is agreed on."
Certain things did require consensus. SPOILER!!: Ms. Goodman Quote:

The tears began to flow freely now as he told her to do PUSH UPS. The mere thought of it had triggered Hufflepuff's anxiety for sure. So as she opened her mouth to try and defend herself she found that all she could do was heave for breath, tears flowing uncontrollably. SHE HAD NEVER BEEN IN TROUBLE IN HER LIFE AND OMG SHE WAS ONLY DOING WHAT HER PREFECT HAD SAID! Despair! It was all too much!
But the young girl did try to give Derf a reassuring smile as he spoke up for her... but she felt the sinking feeling in her stomach that said it was going to do no good. Soooo... she slipped off of the log she was seated on and attempted to get her breathing under control and get in position for push ups. Because she dare not ask to be excused to go to the Healer or to her HoH... or anyone ever. She was genuinely unable to speak as she sobbed and basically just laid on the ground at this point.
Again, the ground could open up and swallow her whole at any time now. She was unsure what was more embarrassing: Being bullied by a Professor for being too literal, or the fact that she was crying and lying on the ground right now.
But this right here was what he was talking about. The Hufflepuffs were on a ROLL. "Oh for the love of Merlin." Calvin stood stiffly watching the girl create her own scene on the ground, not bothering to hide the roll of his eyes. All the people doing push ups and she has to decide it's the end of the bloody world. He really would be needing a word with Noble. This was getting out of hand. "Hurry it up or you'll have another set of 25, Ms. Goodman." He said sternly. Her tears would not sway him in the slightest. "And you will complete them here or in detention. That choice I leave to you. Pull yourself together and stop this unseemly behaviour. You are not the only one to have been asked to do push ups and you're making a rather large spectacle of yourself." Drama Queen. "Circe, even the first years did this without fuss." This was disrupting his lesson and that was a clear violation of the rules. In its own right, it deserved another set of punishment but he would settle for her composing herself and getting it over without before he had to take further action. And yes, that last bit was exclaimed out loud in an amused tone. "It's like you guys want someone to burn to a crisp just because they were long-fringed sleeves that caught on fire or, or burn their long hair or something." Still amused-toned And no, Archer wasn't aware of just how her words might affect some of her classmates. She hadn't been here last term, after all. Nor was she really worried about the consequences of her actions. Actually, she hadn't really thought about them....
And yes, she was sitting now.
This was yet another disruption. Calvin's head whipped around in the direction of.... OF COURSE it was another Hufflepuff. Of. Course. Ms. Calrissian had effectively pulled his attention away from the dramatic Ms. Goodman with her sudden outburst.
If he had hair he'd been pulling on it by now. "Up, Ms. Calrissian. You will begin running the perimeter of this class until I tell you to stop. Outbursts are not allowed in my class." SPOILER!!: Mr. Park Quote:

...Although for all his internal complaining about the rulebreakers earlier, he did have to admit that he genuinely felt bad for the ones who had broken the rules by accident. He cast a quick sidelong glance at the poor Hufflepuffs doing pushups, but he didn't let his gaze linger. Didn't want to be thought to be a sympathizer, you know.
Considering the professor's question, Benji raised his hand and waited to be called upon. He didn't know much about pyromancy, but he had read a few things in the textbook over the summer (what a nerd). "Sir, I think that 'typical' may change depending on what type of pyromancy one is attempting. I know for some types, the seer is meant to throw something particular into the fire, like salt or different types of herbs. So I would suppose that each type of pyromancy has its own version of a typical session, depending on what you need, when you're supposed to use it, and things like that."
Right? Hopefully that would suffice. He was halfway guessing, but it was an educated guess, at least, not a total shot in the dark...
His scowl transferred next to the young Ravenclaw, finding he no longer had the patience for obvious answers. "Don't you think, Mr. Park, that in the time it took you to spout all that, you could have just given information about a specific branch of pyromancy?" Circe, the boy went on about there being different kinds and the practices being different depending on which was done. Well. DUH. Did he actually plan to contribute to the discussion or not? Really, it might have been easier to write down ENTIRE CLASS by the end of this, but to her, it was a good experiment…she was jotting down the little tallies right until Professor Fletcher responded to her comments on pyromancy.
Right…she simply nodded as he spoke trying to capitalize on the I’m just a second year vibe she could only run with this term alone. She did of course grin when he mentioned Hephaestus.
Right…two people could see different meanings in the same fire that made sense. Divinations like most things was a subjective art. What did they know…okay, what did she know about pyromancy.
Raising her hand and waaaaiting to be called on Beth spoke up. ”Professor, I would say there are safety measures in place when pyromancy is in use…things like having your hair up and out of the way so it doesn’t catch fire on accident as with any. Type of divinations adding additional things…burning hair, clothes, the like can change the reading or change your experience in the reading taking you out of the moment.” like yeah, fire wasn’t always the safest and you couldn’t pay attention with head of burning hair.
Her answer, while also obvious, was not quite so painfully obvious and vague as Mr. Park's had been, so the man decides to accept it. "Yes, it would do you a world of good to ensure the right safety measures are in place before you begin any sort of work with fire. It can not only save you having to begin the session again but a lot more in the long run."
Now then, someone please tell him the interruptions and general rule breaking were over. It was about time to get to the first part of the activity and there was still a bit to be said. "Some of you brought up excellent points." Some did not. He was courteous enough not to say as much. "The most obvious but possibly one of the most important would be the safety precautions that need to be taken before any instance of dealing with fire. It's for that reason you are all seated at this distance from the fire." He didn't trust a single one of them for even a second. Someone would've gotten burned tonight. "Meditation, as Mr. Lowe so rightly brought up, can go a long way with the practice not only of pyromancy but divination on a whole. It does require a clear, strong mind and mediation is a means of achieving such a state." As they were hopefully about to find out. By this point he wasn't holding his breath. "Several items can be burned, sometimes none are burned but salt is tossed into the flames. You have readings that are dependent on the smoke." He turned to face the fire. "I'd like everyone to look at the flames here. If you'd notice they aren't flickering about wildly and they aren't giving off thick or dark smoke. This is a good omen." Despite how hellish the night had turned out. "The flames themselves are not disturbed by any wind, also a good omen." He would believe that whatever message they would interrupt had nothing to do with tonight. "In a minute, we'll begin our own readings. For now, please take one." He paused to fish a box out of his pocket. It contained little packets of salt that could fit in one's palm. The box was levitated around the circle the students sat in. "Don't focus too much on the salt for now." That would come later. "I'd like you to close your eyes, steady your breathing, clear your mind. At the same time, I would like you to focus on a question or an issue you'd like some insight into." If they'd been paying attention they'd know it was important to get the mind ready first. "No talking. No mumbling. Limit your fidgeting. You must achieve perfect focus. Begin. We'll do this for ten minutes." And honestly, he was looking forward to that ten minutes of silence. OOC: This will be part one of the mini activity. For now, it's just meditating. Feel free to have your character get super into it or not at all! I'll be moving the lesson on in 24 hrs or so.
