Those who'd followed that rule were given the privilege of sitting for what was likely going to be a long hour for many. "Pyromancy has long been accepted as one of the first, if not the first form of divination. As some of you mentioned, it was a means of communicating with the gods of that time and aided with appeasing them. If they were angry that message could be deciphered in the flames and sacrifices could be offered. If they were pleased, it signaled a period of prosperity. Greek was one civilization in particular that delved into the practice however there have been other instances throughout history in which pyromancy has made its appearance."
Were they taking notes? Did they need to? This should really be revision for most. "Fiction has also seen it fit to portray this art, not always as accurately but muggle fiction in particular has been known to be ignorant toward the real workings of magic. Tales of witches dancing around fires. Great heroes using flames to decipher their victories in battle." They got the idea. "It can be one of the trickier forms of divination, as a few others of you have mentioned, namely for the fact it is dependent on what the reader sees in the flames. Smoke reading, for instance, is one of the less arbitrary forms as it has very clear signs. Thick, dark smoke is known to be a bad omen. The average person can tell when the smoke they are looking at is thick and dark versus smoke that is clear and travels straight upward--a good omen. Something like seeing images in the flames would more likely bring on the issue of different perspectives. Two different individuals could look at the same fire and see different things."
Still following? "Moving on!" He said firmly, getting the attention of anyone who may have spaced during that part of the discussion. "What do you know about a typical pyromancy session? Practices? Things to be avoided? Anything you might find strange. The symbols. Methods." Those who'd been silent before had used up that get out of jail free card. OOC: Okay, question 2 is up! Basically, anything your character might know about the going ons of a regular fire reading session. Maybe something about the smoke or the prep or just about anything while in the middle of that reading. Doesn't have to be right, all answers welcome! I'll move the class again in 24 ish hrs Bel would have preferred getting to sit next to some friends, but in general she was happy enough sitting with anyone, so it didn't bother her too much to have her seat assigned. Divination was still one of those classes she wasn't completely SURE about but so far she thought Professor Fletcher definitely came across as knowledgeable and she could respect that. The push ups? She watched the kids who got given them work through them out of the corner of her eye. That..... wasn't too bad of a thing. She'd rather get given them than have house points taken. Not that she'd try the professor on anything intentionally since that wasn't her nature but.... yeah. She could do push ups. And chin ups for that matter. All this fitness-related stuff going on lately? Totally up her alley. No complaints here whatsoever.
With her robes tightly tucked around herself for warmth against the Scottish air, Bel took notes with her book balanced on one knee. This was interesting stuff. She didn't really know a lot about this specific stuff but.... she put her hand up to try and contribute something anyway. "Professor, I don't know much about this kind of pyromancy because they didn't really do this same thing back home in 'stralia, but there IS a lot of fire-use there traditionally amongst the different indigenous peoples. Some tribes burned eucalyptus leaves as part of cleansing rituals for instance. So I think depending on where in the world the traditions are, it means different leaves or herbs or whatever might be used, ya know? Because I guess fire needs to be fueled.... so if you want your fire to have some kind of specific ritual or magical purpose, you probably have to fuel it with the right stuff. So I think... what I'm getting at is to control a fire you have to control its fuel, whether that's magical fuel like from someone's intent or some kind of mundane fuel or something else." Bel reasoned out. It made sense to her anyway.
