Default Astronomy term long assignment: observation night 2
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

It had been raining for the past couple of nights and Dorian had been forced to postpone his long term assignment until he could stay outside and not get wet. There were probably spells for that but the third year had not really bothered looking it up. He had been too invested in his comic books anyway.

But tonight, the Ravenclaw had looked up and out of the Ravenclaw Common Room window and saw that it was a clear night. It had taken him some time to gather his things but eventually he was climbing the stairs again, thanking Dumbledore that his Common Room was already in one of the towers so he did not need to climb that far. Once he reached the spiral staircase leading up to the battlements, Dorian let out a sigh before he continued his climb.

His bag was light thanks to the Undetectable Extension Charm and as he reached the area he looked around first. He had never, in his three years of being at Hogwarts, been here before. He had actually found out about this place when he had been looking back at the castle during one of the Care of Magical Creatures lessons and he had seen this part he had never paid attention to. Naturally, as most of the Ravenclaws were, his curiosity got the best of him and here he was.

Dorian sat down on one of the wooden crates and took his bag off of his shoulders. Perhaps he had not need to bring his blanket this time as he did not know there would be places to sit. Maybe he could use it to wrap it around himself if it got really cold. Although the sky was mostly clear, there were some clouds and they went in front of the moon occasionally making the area he was in dark and then light and then dark again.

Another thing that should be noted was that the teenager had learned from his past mistake and he had not bring his comic book with him. Just a blanket and something to drink. Hot chocolate milk to be exact. Stayed heated up with the use of a charm he had asked one of the older Ravenclaw students to do before he had went up to the battlements.

He looked up at the sky and was disappointed there was no sign of the colorful aurora borealis yet. He didn’t even know if It would be visible tonight. Were there specific days it could be seen? Perhaps it had been mentioned in class but he forgot? Ah, at least he could enjoy the silence again.

Silence that became BORING after an hour. He checked his watch to see the time and noted that it was nearing 11:30pm. He promised himself to wait till at least 1am. He was not a quitter even when he got bored. He just wished he had his comic book with him…. No, that would only distract him besides, he could sit and look at the sky for hours. He could totally do that! With renewed passion, Dorian took a sip from his hot chocolate milk as he watched the sky again.

The hot chocolate was almost finished and he placed the mug on the ground. He didn’t think there would be any lights to see tonight. And then he got an idea. He took out his wand from his robe pocket he really had to ask his father if he could buy a wrist holster for him next year in diagon alley and held it in front of him. Now…what was the incantation again?
Eeeeh….. He reached inside of his bag again and took out his single note book he used for Astronomy. He had one for each class so it was easier to keep track of things. He flipped the pages until his memory sparked when he saw the incantation written down. Closing his book, Dorian pointed his wand in front of him and waved it. ” Fluctus Lux!” ………..”Fluctus Lux!” ………wasn’t there supposed to be light? ”Fluctus Lux!!”

Finally he managed to perform the spell and he watched as he had managed to cast the white light. It was definitely not as beautiful as the colorful lights he had seen during class but whatever. It was better than what the sky was doing. Just give him the northern lights already!

After another 45 minutes, the Ravenclaw yawned behind his hand and decided to call it a night. It was earlier than he had planned. He grabbed the piece of parchment he had used the first time and dragged a line horizontal under it to indicate a new day.

SPOILER!!: observation notes

Name: Dorian Katharos
Year: 3rd
House: Ravenclaw
Times stamp:: 10:34pm – 12:18am
Date: December 2nd 2095

The weather had not been in my favor the next couple of days but finally a clear night had come. I used the battlements location this time to observe the sky in the hope that I would see the northern lights again. Or as we learned in class; Aurora Borealis.

But I deliver bad news yet again. Although the sky was mostly clear with some clouds blocking the moon, I did not see any of the lights tonight as well. So I decided to make my own. With the Fluctus Lux spell we learned in class, it took me a few attempts but I managed to make the white light appear and although it was definitely not as pretty as the colorful lights the sky would make, it was something at least. Plus I had not tried the spell after the lesson so I think it was good to practice it again.

I don’t know when I’ll be observing the sky next but I hope its pretty soon.
