She didn't understand why any of this was happening, which of course, made focusing on quidditch and NEWTs that much more difficult. Last year she had made it quite known that she didn't have interest in Valentine's Day because it resurfaced feelings of her first love, but this year was vowed to be different. She had closure with Brent on the train home last year, she and Apollo were in a good place. Or so she thought. But apparently, she thought wrong, because he didn't want her. She'd given him everything and then he just threw it all away and she had no idea why.

Cue entering the three broomsticks, which seemed like the wrong place for someone who'd been craving to spend time alone. But maybe it was because of her forced isolation that she wanted to observe people... and maybe it was because of her confused state that she sought out the corner, after ordering a butterbeer. Fiyero. Nice safe Gryffindor guy. He wouldn't ask questions. Hopefully.

"May I?" she asked softly, noting the textbook before him. "How's your studying going?" She nodded subtly at the text. Although if he didn't want to talk, she'd be okay with that, even if her thoughts were a rather dark place right now.
Fiyero kept his eyes on his textbook, determined to block out everything going on around him. In his current mood, he was liable to hex anybody who started acting too cheery around him, and a visit to Hawthorne's- or, Merlin forbid, Marchand's office was the last thing he wanted! Probably for the best... no matter how much he studied, he could never make sense of runes. Sometimes he wondered if he only made it to NEWTs level Ancient Runes because his OWL got switched with someone who was actually good at the subject!

He was so distracted by his brooding studying that he barely heard someone speaking to him. "Uh huh," he mumbled, gesturing toward an empty chair near him. It was only at the mention of his studying that he looked up from his book and saw Skylar. All his anger at being passed over for quidditch captain for the second year in a row came rushing back. Now she was someone who deserved to be captain, not who got picked because the head of house thought she was sweet and adorable or needed a confidence boost or some sentimental muck like that! If only he was in any house but Gryffindor... at least he would've stood a chance.

He took a sip of butterbeer to distract himself from his thoughts - or more to the point, keep himself from voicing them out loud. He thought Skylar would probably side with Marchand, and he didn't want to argue. "It's going okay, I guess," he replied, setting his glass down. "Runes isn't one of my better subjects." Blink, blink. Was it just him or did Skylar seem a little... off? He was mildly concerned, but he wasn't going to pry. If she wanted to talk, that was up to her.
