Her stomach turned when she realized that the answer was yes. He really must believe they needed to know about such a horrible spell. Otherwise, he would not be spending an entire lesson on it.
Trying to go to her happy place and believe that there must be some good in a spell like that, she searched her mind for any positives she could find. After a moment, and coming to terms with the queasy feeling rolling through her body, she raised her hand to answer. "Sir, could the flesh-eating hex be used in a medical capacity? Like if the person had a bad infection or another flesh eating virus, use this one to eat away the bad tissue, then stop the hex before it does more damage?" That would be a great use, if it really could work that way.
She pulled out her notes and began to jot down information about the class and the terrible flesh-eating hex. She tried to remain as separated from the reality of the topic as possible, simply focusing on the academic aspects. Any time she let the reality of the discussion come to mind, her stomach lurched and nausea washed over her.
There it was!
Hirsch didn’t expect one of the top answers to be given so suddenly so when Miss Walsh gave her answer, the man was very much taken aback. Green eyes lit up immediately and the dimpled!smile returned to his face. "YES!" he cried, pointing a finger at her, "That’s precisely it! The flesh-eating capability is often used to eat away at the infected part of someone’s skin and then stopped before it goes too far." Which was very much what she just said. "Though, it should be noted that in this context, it shouldn’t be done by anyone other than a Healer or a medical professional otherwise you could risk it going a little too far." Just saying. "But that was an excellent answer. Very well done, Miss Walsh!" Text Cut: Junia Quote:

She was happy to do so for all that Vivian and her other dorm mates had been doing for her the past few years.
Lucky it was only a chalk drawing showing the damage a flesh-eating hex could do because Junia was definitely wrinkling her nose as the illustration changed before her eyes, showcasing just how bad the spell could be. It was one she hoped she'd never have to deal with, though she was more than happy to learn ways to combat it. As for the positives and negatives, well, there were a few. "How slow does it spread, professor? One seeking to harm someone could take advantage of a slow moving spell because the victim might not identify it correctly at onset. By the time they know what they're dealing with, the pain might be too much to bear, giving the opponent the upper hand."
Huh. "Interesting question, Miss Botros. I’d say it goes at a rate of seven inches a minute," At this, he held up his two index fingers to roughly indicate the distance. "But it’s slow enough to still cause some damage so your answer is a very clever one. In fact, it has often been used for this very purpose, wherein people would use the spell knowing that their opponent might not be able to recognise it and by the time they do, it’s too late." Which just made this lesson all the more important. "But that was an excellent answer. Well done!"
And he didn’t miss that nod from earlier, either. Text Cut: Chloe Quote:

"If you were a really mean person maybe you would like seeing people get their flesh eaten? But that is super gross and I don't know why anyone would want that."
No, no, no..
There was no one that mean, was there? She knew this was defense against the dark arts, but did people really want to be dark anymore? Did people like being like that?
No, people were nice, she would keep telling herself that.
This answer broke his heart.
The problem with his subject was that while it was necessary for the students, some just found it a little too dark. How many times had he received an owl from parents saying that the topic wasn’t appropriate for students of a young age? Too many.
So this answer just reminded him how young the girl was and how he was, probably, going to end up breaking her view on the world. "Well....." he stalled, taking a moment to adjust his glasses, "Some people do. Some people think it’s a lot of fun to put their enemies through something like that. More, er, more satisfying."
Pause. "But you’re very right, Miss McCarthy, well done!" Smile. Text Cut: Maddie Quote:

Whatever it was, though, caused Maddie to slightly jump in surprise when the door slammed shut. Alright. Paying attention! Got'cha!
Wait...did he say flesh eating?! EWWWWW. If there was a practical activity today, she was volunteering to sit this one out. "Ughhh," she whispered to herself, as she watched Hirsch's little demonstration on the board. DISGUSTING. She sloooooowly raised her hand, as her face took on an expression that clearly said she was grossed out. "Okay, so as for the negatives, this is disgusting," she pointed out. "Like you said, it's an awful way to die. As for positives? Uhhh..." Were there any positives? ... "I'd have to agree with Emmalyn. Maybe it could heal areas of the body that have been damaged, and then the hex could be stopped before too much unexpected damage could happen."
Was he surprised by the expression on Miss Kemp’s face? No. Did it still amuse him, though? Slightly.
Hirsch tried hard not to let a smile cross his face but her answer just pushed him over into it. "Well, yes, this is disgusting. Very disgusting. Why anyone would want to use it for anything other than medical purposes is beyond me. Which, by the way, you’re very right about as well." Something he was very glad they had picked up on, by the way. "Like I said to Miss Walsh, it should only be done by a medical professional who’s adept at this spell." Trying your hand at this spell on another human being for the very first time was never a good idea. "But excellent answer, Miss Kemp. Well done!" Text Cut: Ronan Quote:

But, he could see the point of the lesson though. And it would be useful to know when it came to Auror training.
Also, some of these kids needed to grow-up. There were some not very nice people in the world. It was just a fact of life. As long as there were good people who stood up for what was right, they would be okay. "As a way of offing someone, it would be pretty hard to trace back to whoever was responsible, seeing as it would be easy to assume that it was an actual flesh-eating virus like the ones Emmalyn mentioned. And by the time anyone realized what had happened, it would probably be too late." I.E., the victim would either be dead or almost dead. "As for why, well, there are some evil people out there....." Everything wasn't always all sunshine and roses.
It was probably not a good idea to seem so enthusiastic about an answer that was, well, dark but he couldn’t help it. As the Head Boy started explaining his answer, a smile crossed Hirsch’s face and he nodded his head more and more vigorously as he went on. "You’re very right about that. In fact, in the past, many dark witches and wizards used this spell as a way of getting away with murder because back then, before the spell was established, they thought a virus had broken out that was killing the public. It was only after some very careful observations that they realised that that wasn’t the case." Text Cut: Vivian Quote:

She did, however, notice the silent exchange between Professor Hirsch and her dorm mate.
When Sky entered the room, Vivian's eyes simply follow her as her other dorm mate chose a seat away from them. She had heard about the nasty relationship stuff that happened, and the Head Girl too had her opinions with regards to it. Still, she felt that, given her own fragile state, it was best to let Skylar be.
Oh, she did figure today's lesson was going to be more gruesome. Why would there be hospital beds here, anyway? Vivian cringed a little bit at the mention of a flesh-eating hex. That was a thing, apparently. And they were supposed to learn it today. Someone should have told her about this before she entered the room. There was a sickening vibe around her, especially at the thought of being eaten alive. Merlin.
Keeping and trying her very best to remain calm and focused, Vivian raised her hand a little. "Will it involve blood, Professor?" She asked. "'Cause if it didn't, I guess... it's a less bloody way to attack someone." Not that she had thought of it. She would never. The Head Girl squeezed her eyes shut for a moment to take a deep breath.
Blood? "That.... is a very interesting theory. I can see why you'd think that but, actually, it's a lot bloodier than some other methods to attack or kill someone, like the Killing Curse." Which would just cause the person to drop dead immediately with no bacteria-like functions involved. "The victim could almost bleed out so in that sense, it's considered to be bloodier and deadlier." Which, again, marked just how gruesome this lesson was going to be. "Interesting theory, though. Well done!" Smile. Text Cut: Stasya Quote:

Of course, plenty of others looked like they needed comfort or something more than her at the moment, and she’d been tempted to go over and give Vivi and/or Sky a hug but the lesson had started before she could follow through on the plan.
Instead, she’d found herself turning her attention to the hospital bed near her, grey-green eyes silently trying to determine if there was some sort of flesh eating hex zombie hiding under the shroud. An Inferius with the hex even, but she also doubted Professor Hirsch would go that far just for a lesson. That and she was hoping, for once, that this was just a theoretical lesson and not that he was going to teach them the actual hex. She did like dueling, but she wasn’t about to cast any sells that would eat someone alive
Even so, she’d found herself raising a hand, maybe a bit hesitantly but she figured he’d understand. “Maybe someone would use the spell as a distraction? I mean, it’s a really cruel and icky distraction, but it would probably stop them from retaliating,” she said, glancing at Junia. Basically what she’d aid but not. She really didn’t like trying to get into the mindset of a Dark wizard, and the professor really should know that. She’d give him the benefit of the doubt, though.
That and the only positive use of the hex was probably what Emmalyn had said. She couldn’t think of any others.
A distraction? Hm. "I can see why, yes," he said slowly, rubbing his beard as he spoke, "Someone who's had this hex cast on them isn't going to worry about retaliating, they're going to be more worried about stopping the hex or getting to St Mungo's in time." Something that he'll talk more about shortly.
Pause. "Someone who's more intent on winning and not on what's right or wrong, someone who doesn't care about methods, would do something like this, yes. Which, as you so rightly said, is cruel. Well done!" Smile. Text Cut: Daehyun Quote:

Surely not real flesh to practice on?!
As for uses, he'd been about to offer the same answer as Emmalyn, but the Hufflepuff had been faster to voice it. But even so, it seemed like an awfully painful way to remove dead tissue - he would rather cut the whole thing off than have his flesh eaten - Merlin, this was getting disgusting. Instead of answering, he focused on taking notes.
But really, he'd never use the spell. If for medical reasons, surely there were other alternatives, and otherwise - he would never wish to inflict that kind of pain on anyone... he'd rather go for a stunning spell... or anything else. Just no raw flesh in sight. He would be the one slowed down at the sight of it.
A silent student? That was to be expected, and even moreso because of the topic of today's lesson. Not everyone had an answer, or a new answer and not everyone wanted to say anything in response to his question. Which was fine, something the man was very much used to given the number of years he's been teaching.
All the same, he glanced over at Mr Yoon shortly before moving onto the next student. As long as the young Gryffindor was paying attention. Text Cut: Rylee Quote:

Fairly gruesome. If this was this supposed to deter her excitement in learning something new, it wasn't. Exactly the opposite was happening. The more she heard about what they were learning during this lesson the more close attention she paid. While the Flesh-eating hex didn't sound at all pretty and the results of it could be disastrous if not reversed in time it was also somewhat fascinating at the same time. Dark magic wasn't something to mess with, she knew that but it didn't stop her from wanting to know as much about it as possible. In the safety of one of these lessons was perfect. Questions could be asked and information would be given.
As for positive and negative reasons for using this spell anything she could think of right now was already said. There was no real need to repeat any of it. Right now she would remain silent but take notes on everything being said as she pulled out some parchment and a quill to do just that.
It was hard to miss the level of excitement that Miss Prichard was giving off and it was something that made the Defence professor smile. It made his job a lot more enjoyable when the students were excited about the lesson and wanted to be there. Trying to teach a class of angsty teenagers who didn't want to be there in the slightest would be more challenging than fighting a army of Dementors.
She was quiet as well? The man said nothing but simply nodded and moved onto the next student. Text Cut: Max Quote:

That corpse flower in Herbology had him thinking about zombies…… but this??? A spell that ate away at human flesh?? Fever and vomiting? Eaten alive? This was literally a zombie hex.
Max stayed quiet and eyed the hospital beds, his imagination running wild thinking about what was concealed under were cloth. Maybe there was actual zombies.
…. and now he didn’t know if he ought to be excited or freaked out.
..... who was also quiet.
Hirsch couldn't help but wonder if this was a sign that he should move onto the next part of the lesson or if the question was just not as thought-provoking as he'd hoped it would be. Maybe there wasn't as many answers as he thought there'd be and so, many were choosing to stay silent.
Or they were so grossed out, they couldn't speak. That was a possibility.
As it were, the man glanced over at Mr Carden for a moment, who looked like he was deep in thought, before moving onto the next student. Text Cut: Lydia Quote:

Lydia listened intently to her classmate's answers. There were some good ones. As expected several people seemed intensely grossed out by the spell. She was definitely among them, but she searched her brain for any positive applications of the spell. A few kids had mentioned it could be used defensively. So that was out.
"Professor," she began. "I suppose you could use it on animals as well? Like pests? To get rid of them, although I can't imagine who would be horrible enough to do that."
On animals?
Hirsch was actually very glad that someone had mentioned animals in this answer because there was a strong link to be mentioned and this was a good way of bringing it up. "That is another way, yes. It's a horrible method but it's one that's been used in the past to get rid of pests." And often, people didn't really care what happened to pests because they didn't see them in the same light. "I'm glad you mentioned animals, though, because the spell could very much be used against animals who have flesh, particularly those whose DNA structure is similar to ours. Of course, this is something that can't be tested out because of the nature of the spell but it's an interesting thought. Well done!" Text Cut: Dorian Quote:

Why anyone would want to use that hex was beyond him. What if something went wrong and it accidentally ate your arm off?! No thank you. Although, he got that that was probably the point of the hex....
Looking back down again to continue his note taking, Dorian lowered the quill down before raising his hand. "Maybe you can use the hex to get rid of diseased skin?" he asked. "Although i doubt anyone should use it if they aren't a qualified Healer..." he added.
He wasn't going to list the negative side cause that was way too long.
The look of disgust was one that he was going to have to get used to, it seemed, but he did have to remind himself that it wasn't exactly directed at him. He might have a beard and tattoos but he wasn't disgusting, was he? He was cool, he hoped.
Right. The answer. The man adjusted his glasses slightly before smiling at the young Ravenclaw. "Exactly, Mr Katharos, exactly. I'm glad you mentioned the Healer part because that is especially important, especially for the use you just mentioned. Well done!" There was no need for him to repeat it, was there? Flesh eating hex. Yes, Emmalyn was making sense as some of the positives it sounded like which was actually a really good answer but as the seventh thought of implications for the rather evil sounding hex, she recalled something else. Which was weird too that she considered this because of her dislike of herbology, but maybe it was because of that in which the she-snake considered this. Or because it's connection to mandrakes and their use in a healing potion against the petrified. Who knew? But whatever the reason, it came to her in a whirlwind as the captain raised her hand. "Perhaps flesh-eating hex could be used similarly to the way flesh eating slug repellent.. so slugs when they start taking over gardens and such, mandrakes come out. Mandrakes are useful in healing potions. Which might make the flesh eating hex the equivalent to flesh eating slugs. Which means there's a use for healing." which is kind of what Emmalyn was getting at, but elaborated slightly? And also maybe why there were hospital beds set up....because they were going to be looking at the healing aspect of a counter hex?
Flesh-eating slug repellent? Hirsch furrowed his eyebrows slightly as the Slytherin Captain elaborated on her answer. "That's a very interesting way of looking at it," he said, nodding slowly, "Maybe it has been used for this very reason in the past. Maybe people weren't able to afford the repellent and so, decided to use the spell." Who knows. "But it's something that would have to be cast with a great deal of accuracy. It might help that the slugs don't move very fast but you don't want to be accidentally hitting any of the Mandrakes in the process."
Pause. "Interesting answer, Miss Diggory. Well done!"
When it looked like nobody else was about to answer, Hirsch clapped his hands once and turned his attention towards the class as a whole. "Excellent! That was an excellent array of answers. I'm glad you've thought outside the box and come up with different uses for a spell like this." Hopefully, it helped them understand the spell a little bit better. "Now," Dramatic pause, anyone? "We're not going to be using the spell today but it's important for you to know as much about it as possible. The incantation is called Comedo Caro and it was initially used as a way of eating away at infected areas of someone's skin and flesh. Sometimes, if someone has a disease that affects parts of their skin and they don't want to make it so visible, they'd request someone to cast the spell on that area to eat away at the infected skin and flesh and then take healing potions to mend the skin afterwards. It's a long process and one that requires a great deal of accuracy but it's one that works generally well."
Cue another dramatic pause. "However, over time, the use of this spell has turned from healing to something a bit more deadly. Dark witches and wizards got a hold of this spell and started to use it for their own twisted methods, with the biggest use being for torture." Which no one had mentioned and, thinking about it, he was glad no one had brought it up. "By subjecting the victim to pain and something gruesome, dark witches and wizards and ensure that they're going to get information out of the victim, whether they're using the spell on the victim themselves or their loved ones." He had a word for people like that but something told him that this wasn't the right environment. "This method of torture has become more popular than the method of healing but there is a way of defending yourselves against them." Which might come as a huge bought of relief. "Before I give away the method of defence, I want you to think of ways you could protect yourselves from this spell. What kind of spells would you use to defend yourself against it?"
Pause. "Think of spells other than the Shield Charms, by the way." Let's get those brains thinking. OOC: EEEEEEE! Look at all of those answers! *flails* I'm so sorry for how late this is, I literally got home about an hour ago *facepalms*
The question is super simple: what spells would you use to defend yourselves against the Flesh-Eating Hex? Feel free to go through the Spells List for this or idk, think of ones yourselves? Weird and whacky answers are more than welcome.
If any part of this doesn't make sense, please feel free to give me a nudge and I'd be happy to go through it with you <3
I'll continue the lesson tomorrow (or later today) at roughly 10pm GMT+1
Thanks for being so patient!
