Derf was GAPING at Chloe when she mentioned them being LUCKY right now - though he got that this was way more her thing than his. (....and had Ronan had a go with the Whomping Willow?). And while Derf couldn't REALLY smell anything anymore...he was pretty sure he could figure out how it got the name CORPSE flower since it smelled like a decaying body...and likely GREW out of one. His mind had already been unraveling about caves and protection surrounding them in a historical context, which meant that he had spiraled all the way to thinking about inferi which then meant he had started freaking out about Jessa and her SOMEHOW getting approval to study NECROMANCY here at Hogwarts and on her OWN with her OWN LAB with WHO KNEW what was going on there because Jessa was REALLY REALLY GOOD AT KEEPING SECRETS SOMETIMES....So while the Hufflepuff had, mostly, moved on from his theory that the Herbology professor was a Dark Lord...this was not helping.
At all.
And the pained expression of a true grin and bear it moment showed that quite vividly.
But one thing for certain was that the plant was MASSIVE and with corpse in the name it was easy for the fifth year to be brought back to that little boy sitting in the living room watching mum's flesh eating shrub massacre the family dog.
Which was why his hand shot up to ask an all important question - because something THAT massive surely needed something quite substantial to maintain itself, right? Other plants like trees and such fleeing his mind in the moment as his heart drummed wildly in his chest. "..........is it carnivorous?" he asked, taking a step AWAY from everything.
