Her astronomy assignment wasn’t going to complete itself, so she headed out to the grounds to try a catch an Aurora Borealis. It was cold, much colder than she had hoped, and her layers were struggling to keep the freezing temperatures out. She shook her head, upset with herself that she decided to try to spot the Aurora Borealis outside on one of the coldest nights. The Astronomy tower would have been a much better choice for her first attempt. Nonetheless, she was committed to the evenings adventure and continued on her way.
Upon her arrival at the igloo, Emmalyn unpacked her thick wool blanket from her bag and laid it out on the ground. Using her bag as a sort of pillow, she got down and layed on her back. The sky was beautiful that evening. Stars filled the blackness with bright pops of white. She scanned the sky for what felt like several hours, becoming more and more frigid, but no colors appeared.
It was getting later and later, and she was becoming more and more tired. She sat up, grabbed her book and parchment out of her bag, and began flipping through the pages. With a defeated sigh, she read that the Aurora Borealis could be seen anywhere between four thirty pm and six am, with the peak occurrences happening between nine thirty pm and one am. She wondered if perhaps she missed it that evening, or it wasn’t going to happen until much later than she would be able to stay awake.
On her parchment, she began to jot down notes.
