Quinn knew exactly what purpose she wanted to make the bind rune for the moment Professor Hawthorne stated what the final activity of the lesson was. In a flash, she had a new sheet of parchment in front of her, name scrawled in the top corner in scarlet ink, and was flipping through her text book already in search of the right runes.

Not even a trivial thing like not knowing the runes well enough to pick the right ones out seemed to slow her down. She was already starting to scribble down every possible rune that might work on her parchment.

Text Cut: rune possibilities
THURISAZ - ᚦ - sacrifice for progress in life/reward from hardship - need for change!
ANSUZ - ᚨ - Authority figure/mentor like a teacher or parent bringing about a positive life changing event
KENAZ - < - solution to a long-standing issue
WUNJO - ᚹ - attainment of a desire
JERA - ᛃ - Positive change/permanent reward after hardship, not temporary like Wunjo...
EIHWAZ - ᛇ - A major and necessary life change/change might be filled with uncertainty at first/significant confrontation of fears and insecurities
BERKANA - ᛒ - A new start in life/"Berkana frequently refers to domestic issues and personal relationships -- particularly those involving emotional support, nurturing and "standing by" loved ones."
OTHALA - ᛟ - Richness of home and family/"may represent an individual who has overcome many obstacles and has now come home to put their feet up and enjoy their lives as they deserve to"

Quinn set her quill down for a moment, studying the runes she'd noted on her parchment. Now it was time to narrow down and select the right set of runes to use. Although, she'd already ruled one, wunjo, for being temporary, and marked another, Eihwaz, to use as it was perfect for one part of her bind rune purpose. The rest didn't seem like they'd be as easy to narrow down. She picked up her quill again, dipped it in ink and started to figure out which to use and which to drop.

For a long while, Quinn just stared down at her parchment, finding it hard to pick which to cross out. Finally she settled on the opposite approach to start: underlining the ones that seemed like they'd work best.

She hesitated, quill hovering over Kenaz. It felt necessary, but was it? Did pointing out this was meant for a solution to her long standing issue with her parents and home needed with all the other positive life changes the other invoked? But a positive life change didn't necessary suggest solution to a problem either.

With a sigh, Quinn underlined Kenaz as well, and crossed out the rest. They were redundant in some way to what she'd underlined.

Now, Quinn had five runes. Was there a limit on how many could be used? Were fewer better? She poured over her parchment again, looking to see if any were in fact redundant or unnecessary. The bind rune's purpose was to ensure she would, in fact, be leaving her neglectful birth parents for new, more caring parents, the Moons. That everything would work out and she'd be adopted by them and it scared her how much she really wanted this, and pained her when she got worried it might not happen. So, Eihwaz was definitely needed. It represented her fear and uncertainty of the change, which would work out well in the end. So Eihwaz, definitely.

Berkana represented a fresh, new start in life, AKA being adopted by the Moons, after her long standing domestic issues: her neglectful parents and the lack of emotional support, and nurturing relationship with them, while also possibly hinting at the emotional support and nurturing relationship she already seemed to be developing with the Moons. So, Eihwaz and Berkana were needed. Also, given that the Moons were a solution to her long-standing issues with her birth parents, Kenaz felt needed too. Berkana and Kenaz seemed to be the two sides of the same coin, both felt necessary to complete the picture to her.

So, Eihwaz, Berkana and Kenaz. And this whole thing was about family, and finally finding her home and "becoming rich with family and home" through the Moons. So Othala too.

Ansuz represented Imogen Greyvson, who set it all in motion. But that already happened, so even though it was a necessary piece of the puzzle, it had happened, so was it needed for the bind rune? She wouldn't be invoking it to happen, just referencing it did happen.

Bind runes are hard.

She decided to keep it, just in case.

Okay, so, looks like her bind rune will have 5 runes. Hopefully that would be okay. Now where to start? This was about family, so Othala maybe? But more to the point, she felt the bind rune she was making was calm her doubt and uncertainty and give her faith this would all work out. So, in that purpose, Eihwaz was the key ingredient. Quinn drew a nice sized Eihwaz on her parchment. This would be the center. Next she added Berkana to it, for the new start, followed by Kenaz. Next she added Ansuz, but flipped backwards. Finally she capped it all off with Othala, representing family. She saved othala for last, as it felt right bookending the bind rune with the main focuses of the purpose: Her anxiety and family.

That finished, and somewhat decent, hopefully, Quinn moved on to writing the description for the purpose of the bind rune.

PURPOSE

This bind rune is made to help me overcome my fears and doubts that my potential emancipation from my parents and adoption this summer by the Moons will fall through. It is also to help assure this will happen. The bind rune is comprised of Eihwaz at it's center, representing a positive and necessary change, but also my doubt and uncertainty regarding it. Over that I placed Berkana, representing the new start away from my old family issues and lack of nurturing and emotional support, into a new family that seems full of both. Next I placed Kenaz, opposite of Berkana, reflecting the fact this is a solution to a very long standing problem. Next I flipped Ansuz and placed it backwards over both Eihwaz and Kenaz, and representing Beth's Mum, who has been a sort of mother figure for me and who put all this in motion. She is key to everything and so I felt Ansuz was necessary. And finally I crowned it with Othala, representing my new family and home if all goes well.

And that's my bind rune.

Quietly thankful only Professor Hawthorne would be seeing this, Quinn gave it one last check and then packed her things. When she was done, she stood up, slung her bag over her shoulder and brought her assignment up to the Headmistress. "It was a very interesting class, Professor," she said as she handed the parchment to Professor Hawthorne. "Thank you."

Finished, Quinn made her way out of the classroom.
