Reassuring," he added with a playful wink. "I...er...I dunno if there are two or not. There could be more but with that one and it already looking like Thurisaz on it's own...but a single rune wouldn't be a bind rune so...I assumed Isa was in there hidden like we talked about in class. Or, well, I suppose that MAYBE it could be Kenaz in reverse with Isa...which would turn all of it's meanings opposite...no hope and no creativity...uncontrollable energy..."
Which did wonders for his conspiracy theory thoughts, you know?
But back to the pendant and what Maddie was saying, which he was nodding along with for the record. "That's possible," he nodded. Really, ANYTHING was possible because who knew the proper intent of the witch or wizard who had carved these in the first place? "For me...I was looking more at their energies they invoke and sorta blending it with magical purposes, so the creator made these not to be used immediately but in for future use...as a defense mechanism...one that is in stasis until activated and then its a...er...primal defensive force. Summon something...maybe?"
Which really made him sound a LOT more smart than he actually was.
Moving on to the pendant, Derf opted just to show her his parchment. "That lightning bolt looking squiggle there is Eihwaz and the 'H' shape is Hagalaz...at least how I reckon. Isa could be hidden in her again too for all we know. But I'm confident in these two," he explained with some firm nodding of the head while holding the parchment up for her to see. "The hinge strap read as a more defensive bind rune combination to me...but this one reads more offensive in intent. Maybe."
And he KNEW he was running out of time...but he really wanted to give one of the others a go as well. Perhaps the penannular brooch because that looked the most intricate in terms of line work.
Maddie caught the shaking of the Headmistress' head, indicating that no, they could not be partners. The Hufflepuff had suspected and much. Hence the partnership with Derf. She shrugged when Derf answered her question about the pendant having two or more Runes.
"I'm guessing three," she said.
"Although it's really only a guess." She'd mark it down on her parchment and if necessary, she'd make adjustments later. They'd probably be moving on soon, and she'd rather have something on her parchment than nothing at all.
She paused and looked up at her work.
"Now I'm second guessing myself on the first one," she said with a frown.
"It could easily be Isa and Kenaz. That's the hard thing about Ancient Runes. How do you tell which one is the right answer?" From the way she looked at it, it could be either one.
"I guess I'll just leave it as is. We're probably moving on anyway, so I guess I should just settle on something." She didn't sound confident in her answers at all, but again, she was a first-time Runes student. It'd be interesting to hear what the Headmistress had to say.
She turned to Derf with a smile, a positive out look on things despite her struggle.
"Thanks for working through this with me. I think we did pretty good!" she told him.

Hinge Strap:
- Thurisaz: reactive force or conflict
- Isa: standstill; turn around and wait
- Meaning: I think it means that whoever used this maybe used it in times of war or struggle. Maybe it was when they wanted to stop or slow down to rethink what they were doing.
- Note: It could be Isa and Kenaz. Not sure.
Pendant:
- Hagalaz: letting go of the past
- Ansuz: positive authority figure in a person's life
- Eihwaz: a major or necessary life change
- Meaning: I think it means that someone in your life is trying to guide you in a new and rewarding direction. Whoever wore this pendant had to make a major change in their lives, and it likely turned out very positive for them.
