"Pretty recent, yes," Regina responded with a nod of her head. "Likely by students," -- more specifically ones that previously or currently studied the subject -- "and perhaps some former staff members too. It's hard to say unless they left their names beneath their message." In most cases, they weren't. Just initials or nothing at all.
She smiled at Maddie's ambition to do her own writing on the wall, when the time was right.
The woman couldn't help but let out a quiet laugh the moment the Hufflepuff's eyes went wide. Why so surprised that she couldn't open the box herself? She was only human after all and still had much to learn even at her age. "Hogwarts has plenty of undiscovered mysteries and secrets. I certainly don't have all the answers."
Another laugh escaped her mouth at the mention of Maddie once believing once that runes were useless. "No offense taken. Many often believe that, or that Ancient Runes is horrendously difficult -- which it can be. But I find that working at things that are difficult or challenging are the most interesting and often have the best rewards."
"As for what I'm doing in here," she carried on, "I'm just checking in on things. Making sure nothing vulgar has made its way onto the walls, and then after I was going to make sure everything in the Advanced Rune Study is still in tip-top shape." So, in other words, she was neither lost like the Hufflepuff was nor up to anything terribly exciting.
