She suddenly noticed that he was taking notes and figured that she should, too. She spread out a fresh piece of parchment before her, tossed her book to the side, and wrote down what they'd discussed so far. She also added in a few of her favorites, because she was a thirteen-year-old girly girl, and that's just what she did.
She smiled when Derf mentioned the storytelling aspect of Runes. "I've never quite thought of it that way," she said. "So are you still into Creatures, too? I remember that from my first year." They'd worked in the Nursery some together. She turned her focus back to the runes when Derf asked what she thought the combination of both of them meant. "Hmm..." "I think it means that whoever used this maybe used it in times of war or struggle. Maybe it was when they wanted to stop or slow down to rethink what they were doing," she suggested. She took a minute to jot that down in her notes. "As for the pendant..." She had a feeling he already knew the answer but was giving her a chance, too. That was nice of him. She studied the pendant, comparing it to the same page in the textbook she'd used when studying the hinge strap. "Hagalaz... Ansuz..." She paused, her eyebrows wrinkling inward in confusion. "There's only two? I think I see Eihwaz there, too..."
Derf couldn't help but chuckle a little at her surprise - he HAD just told her before giving her the opportunity to look herself what he had suspected the answer to be, after all. "Well...new or not...this is more about recognizing shapes and patterns," he nodded. Anyone could do that, even a bowtruckle as it turned out. "But it's nice to know that we see the same thing. Reassuring," he added with a playful wink. "I...er...I dunno if there are two or not. There could be more but with that one and it already looking like Thurisaz on it's own...but a single rune wouldn't be a bind rune so...I assumed Isa was in there hidden like we talked about in class. Or, well, I suppose that MAYBE it could be Kenaz in reverse with Isa...which would turn all of it's meanings opposite...no hope and no creativity...uncontrollable energy..."
Which did wonders for his conspiracy theory thoughts, you know?
But back to the pendant and what Maddie was saying, which he was nodding along with for the record. "That's possible," he nodded. Really, ANYTHING was possible because who knew the proper intent of the witch or wizard who had carved these in the first place? "For me...I was looking more at their energies they invoke and sorta blending it with magical purposes, so the creator made these not to be used immediately but in for future use...as a defense mechanism...one that is in stasis until activated and then its a...er...primal defensive force. Summon something...maybe?"
Which really made him sound a LOT more smart than he actually was.
Moving on to the pendant, Derf opted just to show her his parchment. "That lightning bolt looking squiggle there is Eihwaz and the 'H' shape is Hagalaz...at least how I reckon. Isa could be hidden in her again too for all we know. But I'm confident in these two," he explained with some firm nodding of the head while holding the parchment up for her to see. "The hinge strap read as a more defensive bind rune combination to me...but this one reads more offensive in intent. Maybe." Quote: HINGE STRAP
Thurisaz active defensive force, chaos, breaker of resistance, and destructive storms, clearing out a bad situation
Isa reinforcement or stasis, to represent primal form
Kenaz in reverse (???)
no/false hope, no creativity, uncontrollable energy....
Bindrune meaning: a stasis active defensive force that was primal (summon something?) DEFENSIVE PURPOSE PENDANT
Hagalaz removing unwanted influences, breaking destructive patterns, power beyond human ability to harness, objective confrontation, destructive natural forces, chaos.
Eihwaz secrecy, encoding, immortality, bring about profound change
Isa (?) reinforcement or stasis, to represent primal form
Bindrune meaning: rehabilitate and remove unwanted presences/intruders (immortal force???) OFFENSIVE PURPOSE And he KNEW he was running out of time...but he really wanted to give one of the others a go as well. Perhaps the penannular brooch because that looked the most intricate in terms of line work.
