He'd probably already figured out that she wasn't the best at runes, what with her being a first time Ancient Runes student and all. Textbook in hand, she peered at the bind rune on the hinge strap. She compared what she saw in her basic chart of runes to what was on the items before her. "I definitely see Thurisaz," she began, and without touching the item, she traced the straight line and triangular shape of Thurisaz in the air. "It looks like it's just Thurisaz, but if it's supposed to be a bind rune, maybe there's an Isa in there, too."

Smiling, Derf moved closer to Maddie and watched her while she went about checking her textbook to cross reference his own notes. He soon found himself nodding as she spoke, patting his parchment with his hand. "So we are in agreement there, perfect," he said, throwing the younger girl one of his signature grins. "And...I like runes because of the mythos behind them. Storytelling and all." It was kinda his thing, you know? "So...with the combination of those two runes, what do you think it's purpose was?" He, of course, had his own conclusion he had already drawn up but he was curious how she saw things.

And his eyes couldn't help but look at the other bindrune in question before scribbling a few more notes down on his own parchment so he could glance at his textbook again for purpose.

"Headmistress?" Derf asked quite suddenly, his hand SHOOTING up into the air. "How could these be activated? Does someone have to, you know, actively be chanting the galdr for them or...." Touch? REMOVING THINGS FROM WHERE THEY WERE MEANT TO BE KEPT?!
