"My apologies," Regina did reply after the Hufflepuff stated that she had been scared. And she left it at that. As for the girl's afterthought, all the former Curse-Breaker and Defensive Studies professor had to say, with a wink, was, "Always be vigilant."
As for the questions that Maddie had, the woman had answers. "This is the Room of Runes. Has been at Hogwarts for quite some time, I believe, based on all of the runic writings on the walls," she said, glancing at a few of the etchings before turning her attention to the box in the centre of the room.
"Yes, that box once belonged to the Merlin." She pointed at the symbol -- Merlin's mark -- present on the lid. "A possession of his that must've been found in the school by someone some time ago. As for what is in it, well, that is the great mystery, isn't it?"
Maddie nodded when the Headmistress gave her the whole 'Always be vigilant' line.
"I figured you'd say something like that," she said with a smile. She looked around the room, taking in all the details Hawthorne was telling her about.
"So who carved all these runes?" It didn't occur to her that it could have been students just like herself. The whole room seemed too mysterious for the carvings to be made by students alone.
The topic changed back to the box, and in doing so, Maddie turned her attention back toward the mystery of Merlin.
"So nobody's ever opened it? Have you ever tried?" she asked. In her eyes, the Headmistress was capable of anything, and if she wanted that box open, she could surely do it, right? Visions of items such as Invisibility Cloaks and super powerful wands filled her mind. What did THE Merlin hide in his box?
