Quinn would defend herself too, of course, but she'd also take the killing curse if it meant her friends got to live.

So, wand was out of sight, but would still be in hand in a second if needed.

She leaned back in her seat, and folded her arms across her chest, eyes never leaving the Professor, and continued to say nothing. Quinnlin Kevelle had no true experience with muggle transportation. That would involve going places. Something Quinn only got to do once, with the Greyvsons. Every other time, she woke up to a note left for her by her parents informing her that they went somewhere. And when she did go anywhere around London, it was usually places like Diagon Alley, where floo powder was used instead. Quinn didn't have an answer to Professor Stewart's question. Not that she'd really have answered even if she did. She rarely volunteered to answer anything.

The look of sass did nothing to move Kay, negatively or positively. She simply gave Quinn a stern gaze in return. At least the wand was put away and as long as it wasn't used purposely again, she could live with that. No answer was volunteered so she turned her attention to someone else.

SPOILER!!: Maddie, Skylar
[QUOTE=Anna Banana;12329792]Just as Maddie had suspected, the topic was about Muggle transportation. She tried to think positive about this, especially since the professor was always so nice and kind. She'd never known Professor Stewart to be any other way. Well, except for that one time...

Anyway.

Maddie thought about the professor's question then raised her hand. "I haven't had a lot of experience with Muggle transportation, but my parents took me to Disney World this past summer, and I rode something called a monorail," she said. "It's a type of train, but my mom said it has different sort of tracks than a regular train. It wasn't too scary until it broke down one time. We couldn't even use magic to fix it! Dad said he could have fixed it in seconds, but we had to wait on Muggle mechanics to get things going again!"[/QUOTE

After putting student's lives at risk the way she did??

Also something that irritated Skylar? These new combination desks. She was nearly five foot nine and they were definitely not made for tall people. Had she been allowed magic in the classroom, she'd have cast some charm on her seat to make it more comfortable, but alas, in the back of the room, the Slytherin captain tried to stretch as much as possible. Yoga session after class was definitely going to be in order.

.... did that first year just ?? Skylar blinked at the young Ravenclaw who was quickly berated for the magic use. Yes, because only magical entities were allowed in this classroom. And yes, she was still salty about that.

Something else she was salty about? Ronan Carter's attitude, especially as he mentioned bugs and getting wet. She rolled her eyes at him, because clearly he didn't realize that the bugs and being open to the elements was majority of the appeal when it came to flying. But apparently Mr Prissy was too entitled for that, as he mentioned his private jet. Just mentioning a jet was not enough for the clearly entitled Gryffindor.

As far as her own preferred muggle transportation mode? Well she far preferred her broom, but alas that was magical, so considering the question, she raised her hand. "Train is the best, in my opinion, because we actually use that method in the wizarding world." Hogwarts Express, anyone? "A muggle train isn't really all too different from the Hogwarts Express and it's nice to be able to just sit back and enjoy the scenery ... it's relaxing."

Kay nodded at Maddie. "Yes, those are rather similar to trains. 'Mono' means one and in this case, that 'one' refers to the fact that this particular type of trail only uses one track or rail in order to work, hence the term means literally 'one rail.' The term was used since 1987.'' She smiled a tight smile now. "That's quite right. It was better to wait for the mechanics.''

Now there was something Skylar had pointed out that was quite true. "Yes, exactly. The Wizarding World has adopted a form of Muggle transport in the form of the train. The Unites States, China and India are among the countries which have the largest train network.''

SPOILER!!: Beth!

So sitting there, as Professor Stewart took those points away from Quinn, was hard, odd…and hard. Quinn wasn’t meaning to hurt anyone but…oh, merlin this was going to be hard wasn’t it? Looking over to Quinn all Beth did was give her an expression that clearly read as sorry, because she was. Sorry she had lost the points, and sorry about whatever had ruined the friendship, even fleeting, that she had once shared with Ewan.

Oh…class had started, her silent thoughts were being interrupted by questions about…transportation, sure, she was aware the lesson was on transportation. Still, a part of her didn’t right well care about transportation. She knew it was a thing but it wasn’t like she had to use all that often herself.

Glancing she watched as Kemp talked about a trip to Disney world, her eyes somewhat glazing over as she spoke of the experience. It wasn’t that it was boring – it was…it was more that she didn’t really care for Disney not really. Finally, after quite a bit of contemplation the blonde raised her hand.

”I’ve taken quite a few black cabs when I’m at home with my family - and…I think my favorite experience was using a little paddleboat in a pond over summer? We didn’t get anywhere really, but I mean, I know paddleboats, kayaks, and canoes are muggle transportation.” she was speaking firmly because well, she knew things.

"Cabs are important. Many persons turn to them when they need transportation. In countries, the terms vary but there are four types of cabs: Hackney carriages which are the ones stopped publicly in the streets, Private hires which are hired in advance, taxibuses which ply particular and specified routes and limousines which are used for extra special occasions.'' Kay made a note of this on her white board with the purple marker. "Those are indeed forms of transportation but they're mainly used for recreational purposes.''

SPOILER!!: Daehyun, Harriet!

Maybe it was only wizarding sports that he was bad at.

Also, mental note - he would be sticking to Ewan for the rest of his Muggle Studies lessons. The boy seemed to know his stuff.

Just before class started, he didn't miss Quinn losing a lot of points for Ravenclaw, and he couldn't help but frown. Not at the girl, but just at the whole situation. Was she okay? He didn't know her well enough just yet to determine if that was her usual self, or if that was her on a bad day. But Beth would know for sure.

Now, on to the lesson.

Muggle transportation.

...

His hand went up in the air hesitantly. "They have those-ummm-what are they called-the iron bird-like-things? Those seem to be the fastest that they use." But he wouldn't know for sure. The most muggle mean of transportation that he'd used was the Hogwarts Express. As for cars - living in a muggle neighbourhood, he saw quite a bunch, but he could never see himself actually driving one. He was disastrous enough on a broom.

She listened carefully to what her fellow peers were saying. The stuff Bel said was cool, and she'd never really thought about dirt bikes before. They sounded was cool, and she was pretty interested in having a go now. Maybe that could be something for the summer. But for now she had to think of her own answer. Thinking about that reminded her of the summer, and that was how she got to her answer.

"I mostly use muggle cars, but I had the chance to go on an aeroplane over the summer. Which is kinda like a broom I guess, but can be used for long distances. I went on a plane to Hawaii, which I wouldn't like to do on a broom. It was pretty cool, and I find it so fascinating how muggles can get all that metal into the air without magic" It was scary, but fascinating. It had been a great experience.

Daehyun's effort was much appreciated while Etta got nods. "I believe you're referring to airplanes. Yes, this is used for making long distance trips particularly from one country to another or to another part of the same country. They come in different sizes and designs. More modern planes are able to fly via computer controls alone which unfortunately eliminates the need for pilots. Did you know that the first airplane was invented in 1903 by American brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright?''

Did she have any experience? Sure she did. She had been on airplanes, in cars, on motorcycles, boats, busses, trains, and even a helicopter. By far, her favorite was the motorcycle. Even with flying, now that she was part of the magical world, she longed to be old enough to ride a motorcycle by herself.

She raised her hand and waited for her turn. “Professor, my favorite is the motorcycle. I’ve never driven one, but I’ve ridden one with my father many times. It’s the best. I guess it kind of feels like flying on a broom, but faster since you are so close to the ground.” she giggled a bit. “I mean the motorcycle is on the ground, but your body is closer to the ground, making it feel faster.” She hoped that sounded right.

"My uncle, has a motorcycle, yet he said he would never let me ride it until I was a decent bicycle rider. So he taught me how to ride on it...it was terrifying, keeping the balance with only your feet, moving in a cycle, (internal duh), yet after a few falls and scratches, people manage to ride it properly and learn the traffic rules when you use it. It's almost as important as when you ride a car, I think..." And then he just cleared his throat. Whoa, adrenaline rush happened right there.

"Also called the motorbike.'' Kay knew exactly what Lyn was referring to when she compared it to a broomstick. It dragged up painful memories of her now dead fiancé and when they went on rides together. "I can certainly be compared to that of a broom. Motorcycles come with either two or three wheels and while they are used for transport, they're also used for recreation to some. For example, there are persons who are a part of motorcycle gangs.'' A small smile was sent Frankie's way. "I do think that your uncle is a smart man, Mr Choe. It makes a lot of sense to learn the bicycle first.''

Anyway, the lesson was starting. And he could guess, just from the hints Professor Stewart was giving, what the lesson was going to be about. Cars. He didn't have the obsession with them that some guys did, but he did much prefer them over brooms. "I prefer cars. There's just something about them that's even better than brooms. Plus, unlike brooms, you don't have to worry about bugs or getting wet." In fact, he had studied all summer so that he could get his license over the Christmas holiday.

"Though, if I have to go very far or have to be somewhere in a hurry, I prefer my family's private jet." Yes, he said private jet. Don't everyone freak out at once.

While the Ravenclaw was busy neatly placing his muggle pen he had specialty bought for this subject on to his textbook, Dorian could not help but hear a two times 10 points loss.

Normally, he wouldn't have bothered. What idiocy students did to lose points was their problem. However, he quickly learned that the student in question had been Quinn. And she was in his House. So that meant that HE had lost points as well.

Dorian's jaw clenched and he was frowning. But he was not frowning at Quinn. He was frowning at the Professor. 20 points? Wasn't that too much? He had not heard nor seen what had taken place but the classroom seemed to be in perfect order and no one was lying on the floor in pain or something. So it wasn't like the first year had done something THAT horrible.

But instead of voicing his opinion and taking the risk of losing points himself, the third year let out a frustrated soft sigh and raised his hand to answer the first question in a calm and friendly tone.

"My dad has a driver's license and a car , Professor" he said. "But i don't know what he likes about a car to be honest. It's so ...confining and...slow"

Dull eyes moved back and forth between the three but admittedly, she wasn't paying as much attention as would be necessary to figure out what had them in a knot. Her interest went only so far as seeing what would happen next. Would the Beth girl pull another move like in History of Magic? Would Ronan be...well....Ronan...? The possibilities were entertaining in their own sort of way, even if they did little to keep her from feeling she may have been going brain dead.

"Cars are alright, planes take too long, ships take even longer, buses can be crowded, bikes are tiring, motorbikes are thought to be dangerous."

The Ravenclaw rattled off a few methods of transportation, her gaze shifting over to the window. In another minute or two she would give up. That was where her reading material would come in handy.

Did she imagine it or did Ronan look extremely happy that Quinn had just lost some points. There might be some beef between these two. However, he did touch upon the main topic for today; not that she was about to elaborate on that just yet though some others as well must have figured it out. "Cars are quite the convenience, especially if you have your own as well as your license. Fun fact: the first mass production of cars began in 1901 by Ransom Eli Olds.'' Private jet? Kay's reaction was no more than a raised eyebrow. Boasting did not impress her.

The woman had given Dorian a small smile earlier. "You're still free to wear your uniform.'' Now she gazed at him thoughtfully. "The size would depend on if it's confining, unless you're claustrophobic? And perhaps your dad is a cautious driver so it seems he dries slow.'' She didn't know about the latter exactly.

"Right, Ms Cambridge. They all have their disadvantages too.'' Yet another kiddo that preferred cars. Excellent.

Truth be told, Kay had not heard the whispered words from Beth. It was Quinn's reaction that got her suspicions up first. Ronan's reply just confirmed it. At that instant the Professor called her name to answer the question. Quite startled, she thought of an example of a Muggle transportation. It took her quite a while to finally speak. "Muggle boats! I've tried once with my grandfather. His Muggle crews call it a fishing boat." Her eyes were a glint of enthusiasm now, "...I went around and I saw moving parts below deck they call an engine. Too loud moving parts. Just like with a Muggle car. It's the one which drives the boat." She tried Muggle cars too...and trains similar to the Hogwarts Express, almost similar actually.

She heard about Spaceships too but she hadn't tried it yet, so no need to mention that. These cars used when you go into space, outside the earth, amongst the stars. She liked anything techie, in the mere fact that it tickles her curiosity. Muggles had no magic and they simply were just intelligent creatures. She had to admit that.

"I'm inclined to agree with you, Mr Carden, Ms Fairfield.'' Not many knew this was one of her fears. "Many boating accidents happen unfortunately. Not just to large boats like the Titanic in 1912 but even to smaller boats. One must be extra careful and take the proper precautions when using this method. In other words, make sure you use lifejackets at all times.''

Wow. Call Kay impressed. She had never so much as seen a boat's engine. "Another situation whereby a transportation method can be used for something different... in this case, a means to earning a living. I take it that you liked the experience, Ms Hurst?''

Though he quickly put together what they ought to be sharing once he listened to his classmates.

His own experiences with muggle transportation? Well...it was kinda limited really. Mum and dad preferred to travel by magical means and when they DID travel it was across continents and stuff...and airplanes too way too long as some people were pointing out.

"I've been in cars before," he nodded, mostly glancing over at Jessa because those times had mostly been together. "And boats. They're neat. But...erm...this summer I got to try motocross for the first time. And, well, I know that's not exactly transportation really...but it was loads of fun."

Yes. Off topic a bit there Derf.

"OH OH! And cable cars! Like...the aerial lift sorts. I think those are SUPER neat!"

"Professor, I ride dirtbikes, you know, motocross and freestyle motocross? So I definitely think they're best. I've brought some of my mates out to the tracks to try it too," Derf and Tayo for instance, "Its so much fun, but it can be dangerous if you aren't sensible about it and if you don't take proper precautions. We also have a ute for hauling my bikes to and from the tracks too." Bel said, completely unawares that 99.99 percent of the class wouldn't have a single earthly clue what a ute was, given it was an Antipodean term. "I've been racing since I was a toddler, and jumping and tricking on my bikes since I was about six, but its always supervised, and we wear protective gear -helmet, gloves, boots, chestplate, goggles, that sort of thing- and also there's limits on things like the physical size of the bike and the power of the motor depending on what level you're riding at, your physical strength, and your experience. I've had a few injuries but nothing serious, though I've seen some pretty spectacular and serious wipe-outs, usually when people were showboating and not being safe." The Australian girl said, addressing the whole having a scare thing, and talking a mile a minute out of sheer passion for the topic.

"My tips for anyone who is interested in it, is to get some one-on-one coaching its good fun and it helps a lot with confidence, which is really important when you're handling a motorbike of any kind." And a couple other people were talking about motorbikes too, which Bel was excitedly listening to and nodding along with, especially when Emmalyn mentioned about flying, but she was pretty sure they were all talking about road bikes, which was a different thing entirely.

She was still having trouble with the desk and chair combo, by the way, alternatively scooting right to the edge of the chair to lean forward on the desk surface, and back in the chair properly but not being comfortable with the desk alignment as she talked. Honestly? She'd be WAY more comfy on a dirtbike, probably surprising nobody.

"Five points for your demonstration to Ms. Macindoe.''

"Motocross, everyone, is a form of off road motorcycle racing. While correctly stated it isn't a form of transportation, it must be noted that this is yet another method where transportation can be used in a competitive manner. Excellent, out of the box thinking, Mr Ashburry- Hawthorne. Cable cars indeed. In addition to being used aerially, they can be used on the ground. These exist in places like New Zealand and America, particularly San Francisco.''

OOC: I'm sorry but I forgot to give Derf the points earlier

Bel certainly had a lot to say but Kay listened with interest. Ah, so it was she that introduced Derf to motocross. "Thank you for sharing that, Ms Macindoe. I must say it's great to have an activity that builds your confidence and brings out a talent within you. Continue to take the precautions that you do.'' The last thing she wanted to hear was Bel was seriously injured in the future. "Continue to encourage your friends to try it also. It sounds fun.'' And scary at the same time but some lived dangerously, right?

Her book back. Laughing now, he turned back to Daniel, his smile back. *Shakes head slightly*.

Spotting Beth as she walked in, he gave a small wave back. At least she wasn’t being overly aggressive towards him for no reason. “It’s not really like football. I mean, they use...I guess you could say a rugby ball? Except it’s slightly smaller”. His smile spread across his face as he continued to talk about it, his enthusiasm building. “There’s so many rules, I don’t actually think I could explain them all now but you’re more than welcome to come with me and Daniel later”. Turning his head towards Daniel now, he raised his eyes a little as if to say, you don’t mind, right? He knew Daniel wouldn’t mind at all because they were... uh... friends with a capital F.

Turning back to Daniel now, his mouth twitched in amusement. “Don’t worry, I’ll give you a crash course on all things muggle sports later”. Sensing his friend’s unease, he leaned over the gap between their desks, “Don’t worry, I’ll have you catching touch down’s in no time”. Chortling a little too loudly now, turned back to the front as the Professor addressed the class for the beginning of the lesson.

Listening intently now, his brain went into overdrive thinking of all the different modes of transport. That was, until she mentioned something about having a scare on one of them. Closing his eyes, he looked up, his heart rate picking up by the minute. “Pull your self together” he whispered, quiet enough so no one could hear him. Giving his head a little shake, her turned back to Daniel.

Seizing on Daniel’s answer now, he smiled, “They’re called aeroplanes mate. They’re basically the fastest mode of transport a muggle has. They tend to use them to travel the world although it can be used to travel smaller distances too”. He couldn’t help but laugh at one of his classmate’s comments about a private jet (Ronan) and then again at Beth’s obvious distaste at his comment. His smile widened as some of his class mates started to describe their favourite modes of muggle transport. “I’ve been on most muggle modes of transport. I mean, the most common is a Car although”, *Deep Breath*, “they’re not exactly safe. Then you have bus, train, plane, bicycle, motorbike, boat and so on...”. He could have gone into some of the less common ones like that of the cable car, but he thought he best not. He didn’t want to bore those who were less interested than he. “I’d have to say my favourite is the motorbike. I have an off road one back home that I use along the mountains at home. Would I recommend one for someone who’s not used muggle transport before? No. I mean, best start off with a bus or a train maybe”. Then again, wizards used brooms so maybe they’d like a motorbike. After all, a bus could be boring. “It really depends on where you want to go and how much effort you want to take to get there”.

"If you think about it, none of them are actually safe. You can be a careful driver or passenger on a boat but something can happen due to the fault of someone else or nature. Never the less, excellent points shared with us. It is important to take small steps when venturing out to use transportation since some of us have certain fears when it comes to the methods. For example, we could be afraid of vast bodies of water.'' Which was basically hers.

Not missing Beth's added wave in company to the smile she wiggled her fingers at her in greeting as well, a wide smile on her face. Beth did see the smile Quinn had given her, right?!

Rylee soft small faltered a bit when the Professor admitted to her that she had been better. It made her sad honestly. She knew how hard their professor was trying to make their lessons fun and really teach them all. When were they all going to come to their sense and see things for what it was. Giving her a sad smile and a tiny understanding nod of her head, Ry sunk back in her seat to prepare herself for the lesson.

Which clearly was to start off with the loss of some points... wow. Rylee glanced over at Dorian noticing his frown. Twenty points was a lot to loss but... this was Muggle Studies? From where she was sitting at the very front of the room she had heard Quinn be told to put her wand away and then the deduction of points happen but she had no idea of why.

The lesson was starting and there was no time to focus on anything else. Which form of muggle transportation was best. Rylee cast a quick glance at Reese. They had traveled quite a bit on a wide variety of different types of transportation. Her favorite though was her sisters motor scooter, mostly because it was charmed to go faster. She wasn't really into cars or things like that... they crashed.

"I like my sisters motor scooter... but I don't really like being in cars especially when you have to drive over bridges going over water. We've been on boats and planes and trains and all that too though... some of those were okay for a little while but it can get boring sitting there for so long." Rylee gave her answer when it was her turn. Getting somewhere by magical means was much faster.

"Scooters are certainly useful. What about if you take something to occupy your time when going for long journeys?'' Kays inquired with a hint of a twinkle in her eye.

"Today we will be studying cars. Oh, we won't delve into the boring history of how they're made or where they originated from.'' Never fear, Kaysha wasn't that boring. "Many witches and wizards go on to take their driver's tests when they reach the minimum Muggle approved age in hope to gain their license. Since cars seem to be the most popular form chosen, we'll be covering the basic exterior and interior parts as well as some crucial do's and don'ts before moving into today's main activity.''

Stewart paused for a moment, taking the time to move to her desk. From within, she retrieved to more pieces of cardboard charts. They were quickly added to the board. "As you can see, I have diagrams of the exterior and exterior of a car. For this portion of the class, we will be labelling them.'' Of course, she could have just given them the diagrams on papers and have them label it but that was too basic and no fun. An interactive activity was what she was going for.

"Please study the diagrams then I will give you your first set of instructions. If you have any questions, now will be an excellent time to ask them or if there's a fact or opinion you want to share, go ahead. Just do not any parts to the diagram.''
