So it was, with his wand still out and that rock now discarded and put back where he had found it, that Derf continued to swim and explore the area all while trying to keep Bartholomew Henry and the group at large in his peripherals.
But this was HIS adventure. The one he had been DREAMING about since he was a first year, maybe earlier while in anticipation of his Hogwarts letter, and he was NOT about to let this chance go to waste. You know?
Not that he was even aware WHERE he was swimming at the moment. Oops.
So the fifth year kept swimming until he came upon the striking green wall of seaweed. Aquatic plants were somewhat in his wheelhouse, despite his aversion to Herbology, and dad and mum had taught him plenty about them over the years. There was a loophole in his reasoning as to why these plants were fine but others not - namely that there were no flesh eating shrubs that lived beneath the surface of the water.
"Hmmm...Nereocystis luetkeana? Himanthalia elongata?" he questioned as he reached out to touch one of the leaves and stalks.
Daisy looked around at her group and noticed that a student was absent. She directed the question to mainly Bartholomew Henry but she was, of course, asking the other students when she said,
"Has anyone seen Derf? I am certain that Professor Wayland would tell him to join the group."
