It felt like she'd been practicing the incantation and wand motion for ages and ages, although in reality, had been less than fifteen minutes. Still, Chloe felt comfortable with the shape of the word in her mouth and how her wand was supposed to slide up and around to make the incomplete 'D', and she really wanted to try on a pumpkin. Worst case scenario was she exploded it or something.
Now she wanted some pie. Was that normal? Chloe shifted the pumpkin to the center of her work station and tried to imagine what it would look like made of stone. The color, the texture, the scent - no longer earthy and like her mother's garden, but the cool and impersonal scent of stone. Did stone have a scent? Scrap that and move on.
When she had it fixed in her head, Chloe drew the D with her wand, clearly speaking the incantation, "Duro." The orange rind of the pumpkin turned gray, starting at the bottom and slowly moving upward. It rocked on its base and came to an abrupt stop, half gray and half orange, and Chloe eeped before casting the spell again. "DURO." Go go go stone. Turn the pumpkin to rock!
