Fluttery Pegasi Quinn arched an eyebrow at Professor Grimsbane. They had been attending classes here for over a month now. Did people really not know the difference between charms and transfiguration by now? She glanced around at her classmates and, alright, yeah. It was entirely believable that some, or perhaps even most, didn't know the difference yet. Sad, isn't it?
To Quinn, however, the questions were insultingly easy. Too easy to even warrant the energy to actually answer. Charms changed the properties of a thing, such our ties changing color to match our houses as soon as we're sorted into them. Charms also produced specific effects, like levitating something in the air. Charms were used to give brooms the power of flight.
Transfiguration on the other hand, changed a thing into something else. A matchstick into a needle. A rodent into a goblet that Quinn would never actually trust drinking out of. Charms only altered the properties and characteristics of a thing. Transfiguration altered the thing itself.
She supposed there could be an overlap between the two. Magic wasn't always clear cut. However, only a month into her first year, Quinn had no examples of a possible overlap to give. Not that she'd have given it outloud if she had.
